The state of mining

Hey folks,

So, I petered out on the beta and decided to wait for the official release. Quick question: what is the state of mining currently?

Last I played the ah, scanner for asteroids (whats it called) scanned or fissures, not for ore. Basically it made the new mining fun, but pointless as you don't really want a motherload of rutile. Did they fix this so that the scanner detects ore concentration?

If not, is there any word on this?

If the current beta goes live as it is now then state of mining for me would be:

One ship for strip mining (my current corvette)
Second ship for core/subsurface mining (will buy krait or orca)

The two mining methods are incompatible with each other so it doesn't make sense to build one all out mining ship which is really unfortunate design from FD.

Yeah have to agree unless you have one of the monster big ships ie Conda or above it makes no sense to equip for all types of mining. Though yields have been increased and payouts age for mining is for sure a viable career when update drops.

thats not entirely true, you can still decide to stripmine all golden ones you come across. since they have surface or subsurface deposists they always grant a bit extra. But the investment in so many hardpoints is mostlikely what makes people choose either the one or the other mining. but smaller nimble ships can definately do some nice strip/core minign mixes. ASPX does that well, bigger ships that aren't very agile probabl don't do both as placing the subs and surface shooting is a bit too time consuming/outcome on non core materials.

So what would be the ideal mining procedure if you're looking to mine regular metals in large quantities? You outfit a ship for both types of mining, do the prospecting and laser mining thing like before, but also crack open / missile drill any yellow roids you come across? Or should you just forget about core mining and focus just on the mining lasers?

Fot that you have to go to metallic ring. In metallic rings the probability of finding asteroid that involves new mining mechanics is just too low. Even if you fnd one the subsurface or surface deposits could be junk and not valuable metals. So the best way to mine regular metals in large quantities is go to haz/high metallic, pristine RES and shoot prospectors on every asteroid in vicinity within 20km from res (to retain bonus in yields) and just forget about new mining mechanics.
If you want to deep core mining you will find most of them in ice rings where strip mining just dont make any profits because of poor % mineral content of asteroids.

The beta has essentially made mining into a more niche activity.
Throw a bunch of new complexities and equipment into the pot, make it chassis specific (big ship), add some spangly effects at it and KABLAM, it still sucks...

We need alternatives.
