Would you buy a single player narrative DLC for ED?

Data-mining suggests something along these lines is already coming... ;)

What data mining? Do you have more info to share on that?

Yeah I'd like some single player campaigns. Why not. The start points could be posted on Galnet and thus make the Galnet fluff pieces actually mean something.

Technically I already have. (Lifetime Expansion Pass)

But normally I would say no — not unless it comes some unique gameplay mechanics.
If all it does is add voiced acted missions or even cutscenes to existing gameplay, then I can just watch that on YouTube and I will not have missed out on anything.

It would have to be a branching storyline, with multiple mid-points and endings before I would consider it.

Games like GTA V have a single player campaign in their open world sandbox. When you're done with the campaign it becomes a pure sandbox. They then sell a few DLC additional campaigns.

Is this possible in ED? Would you buy a DLC single-player campaign that had a story and was only playable in SOLO?

NO. I don't need someone else to plot a story for me to follow. I make my own fun thanks.

To attract my interest, a single player campaign would have to be at least twice as long as the average for triple-A titles these days.

In other words, about twenty minutes.

No need story mode. I would by ED "as is" but playable without internet connection, with save/load/pause.

If I didn't have an LEP, yes.

However, I'd really like to see a standalone, offline, "story mode" version of the game. The original idea was some other commander, but the way it could work, IMO, is that it could implement important events from the history of the live game and allow the player to take the central role in these events, where applicable. It could recreate important events like the Lugh war, the search for Starship One, the discovery of the Thargoids and Guardians, the Distant Worlds Expedition. As players progress they could be given scripted missions to experience these things first hand. Scripted missions would allow the choice of different events, saved games would allow players to go back and make different choices and experience alternate events.

As the live game develops and events occur, those events are added to the story.

This would have several advantages:

* Solo, offline gameplay that many players had hoped for since the kickstarter
* Allow new players to experience the history of the current game and bring them up-to-date with where the live game is now
* Provide a much greater scope for tutorials to give new players skills they can use in the live game
* Provide a sandpit where experienced players can muck about with experimental ship builds (at effectively no cost due to saved games, once the standalone character has been built up)

I would in theory, but from what I've seen so far, I honestly dont think that FDev would be up to the job of making it happen, let alone making it good, even if they wanted to.

Been involved in a few in depth conversations about this on the forums before, and thought about it a lot and here's my view.

There's a lot of issues with single player campaigns in the context of ED. Much of that is related to how a single player campaign would work versus how the main game works and how that would impact on the main game. It's all going to take a lot of consideration and addressing.

In my view, that development time and effort would be much better spent on fleshing out the main game further.

What would also be good is for some of that fleshing out of the main game to fill in some of the gaps that people are experiencing and seeing the single-player campaign as the solution for.

I don't see why there'd be any insurmountable issues.

Add a special briefing/video at the start. Then you do a mission with certain progression elements (kind of like more fleshed out scenarios like in 3.3) and there you have it. Add follow-up missions and your campaign is ready.

I know that's a simplified version, but in principle most tools are already there.

They already have several of the key bits of code to allow a story:
Follow On Missions
Tip Offs
Tip Offs modify the behaviour of static assets
Voice Acting

You could implement decent stories with ZERO programmer effort (plot, assets and voice acting is required). Maybe not all of Sky Rim, but some good short stories.

I would certainly pay for what the OP suggests.

It won't happen though. FD are obsessed with turning ED into a social media platform, unfortunately.

I certainly would, but not at this moment.

To get the most out of this we first need access to atmospheric worlds and gas giants and FPS/FPA needs to be implemented.
And also the Elite galaxy needs a bit more diversity, with new station types, new SRV, a npc crew mechanic etc.

When all this is done, then FDev is in a very good position to create an awesome single player narrative. If they throw in a few extras, like for example a new ship or two, some cool personal outfits and weapons, then this could be a huge success.

I have been dreaming of starting out on foot with nothing, on some planet, eventually acquiring a space ship, having to deal with some crooks, working my way up in a cool story. It would be an awesome experience.

Yeah. This. I'd be playing/fixing ED already if i could do it this way (rather than waiting for Frontier to fix stuff up to my liking). Being able to save and pause when i need is just a necessity for my gaming sessions.

I would pay for this.

But I'd really want to see the product containing some features such as branching story paths, changes in story path based on my decisions and actions as a CMDR, and as the data-mined video indicates, high production values surrounding the key elements of the story. Preferably, even some variable aspects based on each CMDR's own history (such as Pilot's Federation ranks, exploration, trade income, mining history, etc.)

Further, I'd prefer to see such a mission package have some clear distinctions as to the type of CMDR character. For example, story arcs developed around CMDRs who are criminal and pirate oriented. Around CMDRs who are search/rescue types. Around pure mercenary characters. A good design would feature situations where these choices would be open to a CMDR to make on their own, and then their actions impacting the flow of future missions.
