News Removal of 'UA Bombing'

*sighs* while against my personal RP to UA bomb, without the mechanic my faction never would have been born. This is a half (donkey) move, and one more nail in the damn coffin. Hooray for those of you who play ELITE:I WILL TOLERATE NO DANGER. Why not just go whole hog, and put in auto pilot, auto buy/sell, and PvP Flags too just to finish this off? Oh and make the game Solo only too!

Better for whom? All players? .... or just the subset of players who enjoy a currently entirely optional play-style?

Powerplay is currently entirely consensual PvP, i.e. if you don't consent to PvP you can engage in it in either Solo or Private Groups. If it was meant to be required PvP if pledged then it should never have been implemented in all three game modes - yet DBOBE spoke of players in Solo affecting Powerplay around the time of its launch - so I doubt that the pan-modal implementation was an accident. It would seem that there are mixed messages from Frontier between Powerplay's design intent and implementation.

You are just going around in circles here. PP has to stay like it is because it was meant to be so.

UA going away is *different*, because some people think it should be.

That's hypocritical.

UA is going away because Frontier decided to remove it - without warning or discussion. Who they have listened to or which threads regarding UA bombing they have read is not known. Naturally opinions vary on whether this is a bad or good change.

Powerplay is like it is until Frontier choose to change it - whatever they choose to do. That they chose to seek community opinion in the Flash Topic is to be welcomed - and every forum member had the opportunity to give feedback. Naturally opinions vary on whether this would be a good or bad change.

I did not say that Powerplay *had* to stay like it is - I was referring to the use of an unqualified "better" in the quoted post as while the change would obviously be welcomed by some players there will be others who don't see it quite that way. As I said, we'll see what Frontier choose to do - as no-one else can make these changes. I would not be very surprised if Powerplay *does* go Open only - although that would be removing content from players who cannot play in Open (and while all players bought the full game, regardless of play-style preference, not all players can play in the multi-player game modes due to their lack of premium platform access on their console).

It makes sense storywise. But the mechanic has been in game before "UA bombing" became a thing. I would assume something else, like Toxic Waste, would replace and repeat this mechanic. It was Toxic Waste before. Maybe "Anomaly Particles." Salvaging and hauling stranger things in the galaxy is a delicate business. Sometimes something like this happening makes for a good story. Sometimes, a station (or a megaship) shouldn't have had a black market to begin with. Usually, though, UA interference matters very little.

Dear Fdev,

Could we please have other ways to disrupt stations?
If the Thargoids can, why not us?

You like the Thargoids better than us!

If that’s your stance then how can you possibly use that quote from some rando as justification for removing UA bombing?

I don't need to offer a justification - Frontier made the choice themselves and implemented it without discussion with the community. I merely suggested that one of the complaints of some players had been dealt with - just not in the way that they might have hoped.

Any gameplay/balancing reason for this decision? This came rather by surprise and I quite liked the idea of disabling stations. Now there is barely anything to prevent stations from being shut down except waiting for the actual thargs to arrive.

I'm so glad that X4 is looking shiny, and Star Citzen is looking sharp... This kind of news and mostly the lackluster of good updates drove me away from the game 1 year ago... seeing that the game is most likely driving it self in REVERSE , just makes me think that was the right decision... Good Luck Elite , you are on reentry state on my point of view... and quoting John Shepperd on SGA "Reentry is a ....."

Patch notes:

- Weapons are now removed from Open Play.
- "Blazing your own trail" trails are now restricted to trails available in the cash shop
- All mechanics that could lead to interesting events like stations getting converted to Thargoid entities are now replaced by the commodity market

Sad way to fix things. And "surprisingly" Eagleboy is as always first to praise something that castrates a part of the game because this is not to HIS liking. I never UA bombed and yet I am able to see it as a perfectly valid terrorist activity that can happen in Elite world.

BUT BUT it was in the game, so they must have wanted it. I mean, that is how you talk about the lack of OOPP, so you must think FDev had it exactly right to start with, and can't entertain changing things?

Fair point, regarding both the existence of both UA Bombing and Powerplay being pan-modal. The former does indeed show that Frontier are more than willing to change some aspects of their game.

Interesting though that they chose to remove one without warning whereas they undertook a feedback exercise to aid their decision making on the latter. One decision is clear - the other as yet unknown. Frontier are, obviously, in a position to change the game as they see fit - as they have just done so with UA bombing. It will be interesting to see what other changes they have in store for us....

Nor will normal weapons ever be upgraded to affect thargoids.

Well, if FD wants the story to be rigged in favour of the Thargoids, so be it. There's be far more players helping defend humanity if that didn't require gimmick loadouts.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Uh what? You said you were going to offer justification, you said do I need to provide the quote? Are you completely forgetting the slippery slope you started at and have since fallen down?
