The Star Citizen Thread v9

“Should.”

A very dangerous word, that one, especially when related to anything that CIG has ever said, done, or proposed.

Oh i agree. Last i heard server meshing was pushed beyond 3.4.

At the same time, IF they are focusing on SQ42 then i understand if server meshing is pushed since it's not really required.

But as usual there are a lots of IF, SHOULD and WILL.

"Boys, we're 26 onboard and the squad we're trying to reach are already 28 there... Who's volunteer to disconnect?"
15mn of tense arguments later...
"Thanks ManlyJoe42, SJWKiller2007 and Smart-de-Rekt for their sacrifice. Ok, let's go!" *you can't QT there because instance has been filled by pirates while you were arguing...*

TFW your painstakingly better-half-of-a-decade-in-making supasekritt PC-gaming-saving coding plans become reduced to an engine plug-in. [haha]

Hmmm....Actually it can be "applied" to ANY game engine it´s not particularly and only for Unity they just provide their integration for unity&unreal.....

The Lumberyard licence prohibits them from using servers other than AWS. SpatialOS runs on Google Cloud Services.

Either way this tech looks interesting not just for SC but in general for all games including ED.....I am eager to see how this going to apply in reality......

That's what i meant, if someone wants to join you.

Also raises an issue with big orgs as well.

If you are the odd man out and want to join in with 10 people or something, yeah, it is a pain then. Because those ten people have to jump out.

This is supposed to be temporary, but there are going to be a bunch of issues to be figured out with the "server meshing" stuff.

Not sure yet how this is going to work in reality but this could might save the SC and potentially give gamers totally new dimension in ONLINE gaming......
also Bluedrake42 was talking about that.....

It was what Chris meant with his German plan. Idea is quite simple, and those aren't 1000 players in one place, not really. Also such networking will usually meet with harsh cold reality of Internet.

For those that know more about SC than me... are some of the planet's on the nav map not implemented yet? I've travelled to a couple that simply weren't there upon arrival, Arc Corp and another one were just hud markers and no planet after lengthy flight to get there :(

Jon,

My take on it is that they are not planning for players to be able to get to Hurston in one QT jump but need to refuel on the way. ( I hate long travel times,I hope they think it through) But for 3.3.5 they altered the QT fuel requirement to let you go to Hurston in one jump, albeit 12 numbing minutes. As an unexpected consequence you can also now jump to Microtech and ArcCorp but when you get there you just find a few markers.

I have no idea how they intend to make exploration work when you can only QT top set destinations, also those small pathfinder ships will have a terrible range. This is one of the reasons that I will stick with my starter package until I see if/how they sort out exploration.

Oh my, they want to make it even longer?!!!!

Amazon is creating their own big open world MMO, would think they are back porting some of that tech to Lumberyard.

Would love to see the GLA between Amazon and CIG. I wonder if CIG are meant to share their improvements to Lumberyard with Amazon...

Instances ist not what I was talking about. There is no dynamic instancing in the current implementation.
Ok then I'm confused. If you're aware that everyone's in the same instance, in what sense can you be/not-be "in the same map" as someone who's in the same instance as you?

So, while you are here..... let me ask for clarification on that. It doesn't cause you to change to another instance, but its possible to end up in another instance after travelling? Or once in a server instance, always in that server instance?
This is outside my area, but as it stands I believe that you're just in the same instance until you log off. As I understand it, the plan is that server instances will pop in and out of existence in the background wherever you go, rather than being on some distinct boundary like a quantum jump.

Is this where we do the "maps, instances, scenes" sub-argument again? They were fun times...
I suppose the two opposing views are:
1) there is no such thing as a map, the game loads in all the assets relating to where you are dynamically or
2) the game is a collection of maps which load with cunning methods of obfuscation to allow the player to believe it is really point 1)

Or maybe I am missing the nuances again?

I'd argue mostly for 1, but with a caveat. Maps definitely do exist. For instance, any particular ship will be saved (on our side) as a map, we can load it in the level editor, we can load it via console command in the main game (though that unloads everything and takes you to a static loading screen). From within those maps, different collections of entities/assets/markup can be exported as Object Containers. OCs are the things that load dynamically in your description. To complicate things, there's asset streaming below this - an OC-load of an asset like a mesh is just the process of saying "this mesh exists" and registering it with the relevant systems, the actual vertex data streams in and out based on usage/importance/bugs.

So there are objects called maps, but these are different to what we'd think of as an FPS map, because that comprises the entirety of the world geometry? SC ship maps are instead loaded in parallel (multiple ships) across an instance, although any particular game client's view of that instance will be a subset of the objects and their assets due to various lazy loading mechanisms like OC - warmer?

Close. Maps ARE just what you'd think of as a traditional FPS map, but we mostly just use them as staging areas to test stuff or export OCs. The PU is a map (as is the front-end menu weirdly), but mostly it just contains entities that load OCs.
To be clear, the OC isn't the same as the map that exported it, quite often that map will actually contain both the stuff for export, and an OC entity that loads what was exported so they can be seen side by side.

Well, the Expo is just about over, and though I was quite impressed with the Expo itself, and how CIG changed it up daily with the flashy showroom floor(s) of ships and ability to step/sit inside each one as well as rent. Plus experiencing Lorville with its transit system and directions, garbage and security, plus the messy hab apartment, it was quite cool.
HOWEVER, in the end, I am sticking with my trusty Aurora. Frankly, no other ship really set a bar higher than the Aurora in my opinion, other then perhaps the Aegis Avenger Titan. However, even compared to that one, the Aurora remains quite well suited for getting around and experiencing SC, though the Titan does have extra cargo space which is nice. Though with the Aurora, I like the overall view from the Aurora pit along with its performance. Some of the fancy ships I rented, just did not have it together, and were quite underwhelming. The big/giant ships are not my flavor, and in my opinion, best suited to simply visit as some part of questing/mission need.

All in all, I leave Lorville, how I arrived... in my trusty Aurora LN.

Call yourself a Citizen! How are Chris and Sandi going to be able to afford to go to the Monaco Grand Prix next year with that attitude? Buck up commando! Buy an Idris!
