What would you say would be best? ... Im doing PVE killing with them

The sturdy gives you a nice armor pen ... 60%
But the Short range gives 75% damage. What do you guys think?

I think any advice is going to be what's best for that person rather than necessarily what's best for you. Just try them all & see which you prefer. Personally I prefer long range mods so I can stay as far away as possible. If I'm up close & need to do some more damage I'll usually ram them. Depends on the ship of course.

For pure PvE I usually use long range 1 or 5 combined with feedback cascade to counter those pesky NPC Pythons and Anacondas spamming SCBs. Long range to use the micro gimbal effect to the max and to draw those NPCs to me.

This. Almost all my railguns are long range 3 or 4 with feedback or super pen.

For pve, i use extended mag.

The armor pen on rails is alredy so high you realy dont benefit from the sturdy mount. The heat reduction is nice but not always nessasery.

Short rang is nice if you can land shots up close and you arnt using too many rails at once or you have a ship that can take the heat.

Long range is nice it means you can keep your distance and i find it easier to land hits with rails from far away. But 80 shots will soon be gone if you use the rails for damage and not just cells banks and module sniping.

In my viper the 2 smalls are rails and i use them for damage as well as module sniping and cell banks. So i use them constantly thrugh a fight as i cant let those hardpoint go to waste as utility wepons only. So i extended mag them so i have a nice 150 or so shots before i run out. I need to be about 1k to 1.5k away so i dont suffer too much from fall off. And the heat can be managable even on my viper.

What ship are you flying and how many rails are you using at once, and what are you useing them for?

My favorite mod is Long Range, for the same reasons others cited.

To expand a bit on the Sturdy / Armor Pen issue, Rails already have enough armor penetration to do full damage to any ship currently in-game. They gain nothing from increasing this via the Sturdy mod. The only benefit is heat management.

IMO (and I'd stress that) rail guns are a sniping tool. When I use rails, it's on a ship that is kind of a glass cannon and needs to keep distance. Therefore the long range mod is the way to go.
The damage buff on short range sounds nice, but if I'm going to fight the enemy at ranges under 1km, I'd much rather have a couple of frag cannons.

I have 3x class 1 G5 SRB with super penetrator x 2 and feedback cascade plus thermal vent on a beam for cooling on my challenger. They work nicely because the ship is really manoeuvrable and copes with in their face type combat nicely while being able to stay out of trouble (ish) and of course the thermal vent means I can fire the rails more often without overheating.

Using on my Vette. Having a bit of fun. Currently im using 1 imp hammer in the 1 large spot. Its extended mag/super pen.

i'm running 4 short range rails on my Krait, it's less of a sniping tool and more a devastating sledgehammer, normally you just need one or two salvos
to kill the shield and shortly the whole ship [big grin]

and you can pair it with a corrosive MC to get even more oomph

and at last the heat is manageable but you need a bit of fire discipline and even then, the ship modules will suffer a lot

My favorite for PvE has become short-range blaster when flying a fast ship that can dictate the range. For slower ships I go long-range.

Alothough, high capacity on Imperial Hammer railguns are quite fun due to turning it into 6-shot bursts. :D

Is super pen working? I tested a new build w/ 2 c1 short range super pens, and checking the npc's modules after a dozen volleys showed all his modules at 100% still. I couldn't have missed all of them every volley, right?

Railguns are my weapon of choice for Bounty Hunting. I use 2 g1 Long Range Railguns with Plasma Slugs and 2 g1 Long Range Railguns with Feedback Cascade. I spam away with the Plasma Slugs and only pull out the Feedback Cascades when necessary to deal with SCBs. Can Bounty hunt for a couple hours without needing to head home or synthesize and can dismantle any NPC pretty quickly. Thermal Vent Beam compliments this set up well. Along with the 40% Thermal Reduction provided by Plasma Slug, I can spam my Rails with no worries about heat.

Depends on the ship and where your shots landed.

Super penetrator is typically used in conjunction with module targeting to ensure that the targeted module can be hit from any angle and through any number of intervening modules.

Then out of the choices in the op i would go short range. The heat from one hammer isnt going to be a problem in a vett, thogh you might want to consider going grade 4 and not 5 for that bit more range. 1.5k to 1.8k guss its up to you as npcs dont realy manage there range well and for some reason in large slow ships the npcs tend to sit close up in your face.
