Hardware & Technical RTX Titan!

Few reports popping up today about RTX Titan cards being spotted in the wild, several YouTubers like JayzTwoCents have had RTX Titan boxes causally on display in their latest vids, so it's obviously coming.

Place your bets here for the extortionate prices... now that the standard xx80ti version costs as much as the old Titan class cards I'd say £1800-£2000 For the new Titan.

*thanks to StarLightPL for spotting it on their twitter feed, it's a whopping $2500, so pretty much 2x a 2080ti.

Why do Nvidia even bother with this generation of GPUs, as it seems full of defects? No sense in selling some units for crazy prices and then having to RMA / refund each and every one beacuse of faulty manufacturing.

They place certainly the money to get interest during this time there.

A few hundred thousand cards represent a lot of money.

Placed in the short term, brings back a lot of interests.

Failure rates are no where near 100%, or even 50%, and margins are large enough on high-end parts to absorb quite a few returns.

Manufacturing also improves over time. Initially, all the best samples would have been reserved for the Quadro line, but now that initial demand has subsided and yields have started to improve, they can profitably sell low defect parts in a Titan.

With my Pimax seemingly not vapourware after all I am looking at the 2080ti or this to run it. Price aside, if it can do 20% over the 2080ti it might actually be the only card for the foreseeable future capable of running the pimax 8k the way it was intended.

Assuming I keep it for three years and play ED everyday, which I do...

Works out around 2$ a day for my hobby to cover the costs.

Is it too expensive ... obviously but for an enthusiast with disposable income it’s a decent investment in getting the (currently) best VR experience on the market.

Still think the 2080 ti is looking like the better option to be honest, unless the numbers show otherwise.

1. Did your pimax arrive yet? my friend which is backer #120 or something still didn't receive his yet. Should ship soon though as Pimax shipment supposedly made it to the UK warehouse a week ago. Anyhow you're looking at a few months delay.
2. Numbers do already show otherwise regarding 2080Ti and it was in the recent Sweviver video. He compared the Ti's and shows framerates in various VR games and even 2080Ti struggles.

That being said, I think it needs to mature a bit - both pimax software and nvidia drivers. Just yesterday there was news of +50% raytracing performance gain just by installing new drivers (talk about a bug :D).
3. Titan releasing now gives a hope for a 7nm launch sometime in 2019. Will they have Titan performance? Who knows, 1080Ti outclassed (or was pretty close to) previous titan gen IIRC, for far less money. So the advisable thing to do is wait. You need to wait for Pimax anyway. If you plan to stick with this card for three years, you'd better not regret the purchase 6 months down the line, like 1080 owners did when 1080Ti hit the market :)

Also, VR games usually aren't the pinnacle of optimisation either (not that many of their AAA counterparts are, mind you). As the industry matures the hardware requirements to run should lessen or at least stay current.

All I'm saying, it's sensible to wait. It's not sensible to blow this kind of cash on something which may as well be superseded in a half year or so :)

And if you keep it 5 years, and that you play every day but also every night, you can ask to Nvidia to sell it more expensive, because at this price it's really too generous.

:)

Won't be selling many at that price point.

Supply will be limited and I expect them to sell all they release.

There is a small but significant market for those who are willing to pay double for ~10% more performance, or who want single precision Quadro RTX 6000 performance at half-price.

Hasn’t arrived no, so I have some time. My current 980 ti and 1080 certainly won’t do the job though. I’m leaning towards a 2080 ti unless the benchmarks give me a reason to do otherwise. The 980 ti and 1080 in my current rigs have been perfect for a good few years now but it is time to upgrade for sure.
