News Beyond - Chapter Four - Release Date Announcement

Meanwhile, the changes in Q4 have actually got me wanting to explore more than at any point in the last 3 years......so Swings & Roundabouts I guess. Not saying the mechanic in Beta was perfect, but a few minor tweaks would make it pretty darned close.

Bully for you I guess.

It's too late for this release, but in the vain hope that FD are paying attention and might come back to it later, this is what would make me feel the same way as Marc:

I have been distracted the last week and a bit by Red Dead 2.
Does the new mining now yield decent returns in terms of raw matt's and ore fragments?
Also looking forward to doing an exploration trip with the new codex stuff.
Good times!

I sincerely hope they fixed the srv crash on Xbox in 3.3, also the shifting pov bug where the whole hud is moved downwards when re-entering your ship's cockpit.
And I hope the friendly atc messages are back when approaching an allied station, they are gone since 2.4 and still haven't returned even after bug reporting this with each update.

*Subject to personal preference.

Regarding exploration, … the above is a note of warning. I think many people will not like it.

… I certainly do not like the change to the Discovery Scanner. If this was reinstated as originally designed, then the new exploration mechanics would work well for the most part.

… The duel HUD mode which disables things you have on a fire group, when you might need them.
This feature needs to be removed, it's completely superfluous! It's function can be done with fire group options already.

Some other changes are nice, but these are the smaller changes, that just add a bit to QOL.

BUT the two 'biggies', exploration and (to a lesser extent) mining have been made complex and obtuse for no real benefit.
One could have imagined a much simpler solution to both that would have created more user interaction without making the whole process torturous.

Greetings Commanders,

Similarly to previous updates, we want to let you know that all mission progress will be lost when the galaxy servers go down at the launch of 3.3. This is pertinent to those completing long-range passenger and the Ram Tah missions.

Thanks again,

Ed

Interesting to see that the release date has actually been clearly hinted 1 month before the release date !

Because 3.2 is hugely enjoyable and elegant, and (only in my opinion, obviously!) 3.3 has

1: A flawed lighting system (pitch black planets, even though ambient light and even on occasion a nearby star in the sky wouldn't make it like that. Also the Milky Way changing colour like a cosmic chameleon)
2: Marine life apparently inhabiting a vacuum.
3: A new scanner which obscures existing content with a time-sink rather than being an addition for delivering new content
4: A probe system that results in coloured lines being emitted towards a wire-frame globe rather than graphically pleasing space-probes that could look like little satellites travelling towards the actual planet. (I love the idea of the probes, but it just looks rushed)
5: The increasing "Video Gamification" of the interface
6: A fait-accomplait design that was delivered without the focussed-feedback that was originally suggested, and with apparently no room for discussion and change on it either.
7: A galactic map that has been named and divided up with apparently not much taking on board of several years of player-generated content.
8: A long-awaited Orrery that doesn't move.

I absolutely adore 3.2, and have spent a wonderful 6 months playing it, which I don't want to end. I saw little that I liked or expected in the beta for 3.3; the biggest deal-breaker for me is the FSS, and if there was a compromise or alternative offered, it would make me feel like continuing, but I appreciate that this is probably highly unlikely at this point. I think it's time for a break and go do something else for a while - though I must admit, I'd rather not be doing that, I've grown very attached to flying my ship.

Ah well, lesson learned for me - "don't buy a game which is under development - it might turn into something you didn't expect!". This is not meant to be a salty commentary, I'm just really sad.

Sad that you feel that way Si as I've been playing around the same amout of time as you and found the beta content to add more to the game.
Your point 1: - but lighting is badly flawed in 3.2 - when the dark side of a planet is illuminated by magic as your ship goes into orbital cruise in preparation for a landing... point 2: - the ISS has microbial life growing in the vacuum of space, on the outside of their windows! What other wonders could we not have seen yet? 3: - a new scanner that doesn't reveal everything all at once, following a short button press, that one has annoyed a vocal few :)

Point 4: with luck this will be developed further...
Point 5: I don't understand, it's a video game... (sorry being flippant) but another screen to avoid even more binding combinations needed in game makes some kind of sense - if the FSS was 'in cockpit' bindings would become another 'hate' target.
Point 6: fair comment
Point 7: With luck the campaign for both to be shown will do some good.
Point 8: but at least we will have an orrery - again plenty of time to improve it.

Don't give up on the game, each one of us who continues to play will have to learn and adapt to the new system but I feel that it gives far more than it takes away and is worth the effort.

It will still be the same game we enjoy, it has more potential for 'explorers' (I'm biased as I spend most of my time way outside of 'occupied' space) to find the things that remain hidden and that many of us only know about because of others finding them.

As to the lighting, I think it was mentioned by the Dev's that it was not finalised in beta, let's see what next week brings...

Cheers, appreciate the empathy :)

I know the 3.2 lighting is flawed in that the dark side gets a light switched on to it regardless, but it seems less obviously flawed than having a star in the sky over a black planet :D - ideally, a multi-source lighting model that takes into account everything would be the thing to do, but again, a little unlikely, I think.

You and I disagree entirely about the old ADS, but it would be an odd world if everyone agreed about everything :) It works perfectly for me, in that although I see the objects, I've no idea what is on them, their composition, whether they are CFT, or get my tag on them unless I fly out to them, which is the thing I enjoy most. Whereas the FSS garners all of that in a short space of time using a mechanism I find tiresome (and also headache inducing), and can be done from one position. There really should be some compromise or way forward out of this, I wouldn't want to deny anyone their fun of using the FSS if they like it, I just don't want to be forced into it.

There is a theory that life (single cell, anyway) was "injected" onto our planet via cometary bombardment, so I get the idea of life in space, but developed sea-life in space is just a step too far for my willing suspension of disbelief right now :D

I also know it's a video game (or I wouldn't have bought it ;) ), but there is video game, and then there is "Super Mario Kart" video game; I just look at the bling, % targets, x out of y displays, etc, and hear the music from "Pengo" in my head. I know, I should get out more.

It's too late for me, I think. I'm just going to be sad or annoyed about it all when playing, so I think my commander is going to just sit in his Asp (pun intended) way out at the edge of the Perseus arm until I either give in or things move on a bit. I'm not confident that anything more will be done though; this was positioned as the last update to Beyond, which implies that what we get now is what we'll always have, unless I've misunderstood that?

I hear the Witcher III is pretty good, I might give that a go :)
