The Star Citizen Thread v9

It's a turn of phrase. And it is, because you both share the same argument. X isnt a game.

Eh no. Their actual argument almost the exact opposite — it's the conclusion that has some resemblance (except it's also the opposite one). Hence why it's not company I keep.

Dont worry, I didnt assume you would understand in the first place....some people justify 1-liners from me, thats all :)

Oh, it was quite clear. Maybe historical experience of context has its advantages. :D

I'm only going by what you said, yourself
You can also quite easily find people, outside this thread (and particularly in various SC fora), that would claim that ED isn't really a game either and definitely less of one than SC is.
I don't visit those other places.

After reading the last ten pages (and still haven’t caught up) I just had to weigh in on the current topic.

Is Star Citizen a game?

By any reasonable definition it is.

It certainly is mine. I considered Minecraft Alpha 1.4 a game. I considered the initial alphas of Stonehearth a game. I considered the Alphas of Elite Dangerous and Mechwarrior Online a game.

If that was truly the heart of the issue, then this this topic wouldn’t have reached Hotel California levels of posts. Unfortunately of many of us who were looking forward to SC, there are other issues at play here.

When I Kickstarted SC back in 2012, I did so asked on a promise of a game with certain features that would be released in 2014, had been a year in development, and already had a working engine and the prototype game. By this time, having backed other games, I mentally added a year to that release date.

As the years went by, it became clear that what I was promised for my money, a spiritual successor to Wing Commander and Privateer, wasn’t the game they were making. I found out that there had been no prototype, and the engine wasn’t anywhere near ready. I became aware of CIGs shady business practices, from predatory marketing, to welching on their deals with business partners (Crytek being a primary example) and backers, to shell companies and shades of “Hollywood Accounting.” All the while, their development strategy was essentially putting the cart before the horse, which has led to four years and counting delays, a barely functional Alpha, and repeatedly having to rework in-game assets that shouldn’t have been completed until the core design work was finished, and the engine in workable condition.

Thank goodness I got my money out of this project before CIG changed their terms of service again.

Yes? So, pretty much the exact opposite argument and (while structurally similar) the opposite conclusion, and thus not the company I keep.

I don't visit those other places.

This is a sensible and commendable stance. Well, aside from the sheer humour involved, but that might admittedly be down to the cherry-picking in what threads are passed on from the ones willing to go there. :D

But SC fans have some seriously odd beliefs, like... SC will be released in our lifetime...

I’m sitting here thinking I’m screwed. I’ve been having all this fun and I don’t know if I own any games. Can someone please let me know. Are the following games?

star citizen
kerbal space program
space engineers
subnautica

ive owned these games for a very long time. Yet, I’m not sure I own games! All of them were either Alpha or Beta when I bought them.

So please help, as I’m confused.

So for laughs I thought I'd look up the definition of scam.

scam noun
\ˈskam

Definition of scam (Entry 1 of 2)
: a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation

//an insurance scam

scam
verb

scammed; scamming

Definition of scam (Entry 2 of 2)

transitive verb

1 : deceive, defraud

2 : to obtain (something, such as money) by a scam

Seems to fit to me! [haha]

And that is exactly why you need to state a definition. :) You can't have this discussions without them, they are meaningless.

Plenty of times discussed, you just seem to ignore what you do not like. By the way we are still to see yours. Without oversimplification to the absurd, pretty please? :p

And no, Space Engine is not a game. Trying to claim it is one just so to shoehorn your narrative is just as absurd.

It feels we have to let that discussion go. It is all schematics yes, but criticism stands on it's own SC being game or not.

Will say this - Just watch 7 Days To Die streams lately, that early access game is ugly as hell, but it has complete gameplay loops, it has persistence for long time, and while emergent gameplay plays big role there, it is very directed by gameplay.

Is it visually better 'game' than SC? Heck no. Is it more engaging and interesting? Ohh yes.

How much did you pay for each alpha brother?

That's the grit in the sandbox.

Sorry, I have literally posted a formal definition, twice. Linked to official sources. Others did the same, all definitions very much on the same page, all conclude SC is obviously a game. And repeatedly, not just by me, you, AA and Tippis were asked to post a formal definition. And every time you folks don't (but claim to 'have discussed it' which is not at all what people ask for) and just dismiss all definitions from every dictionary as 'absurd'.

Okay, fine. I dont see the point but if this is your hill, have at it. If you cant even acknowledge basic definitions from standardized dictionaries there is really no point in going any further. SC is not a game, I am a balloon, whatever.

i have a much better idea, add me as a contact Lord_Pydus in SC. We can group up and run missions together. Also, of course their are negatives. Disconnects, or no room in a server, or a globe of light in the 600i. Perfect, no way. But, good enough to become my default game and sink real money into it. Even one of the guys I was running with yesterday bought the andromeda package for $275. If it was horrible, would he do that?

Jump, I agree with you there is some great g*meplay to be had and lots of streamers and videos on line to support that.

Well, its a rather glowing report, but one i cannot connect with, since its so far off my own experience of the game, which i can only describe as abysmal.

But, i do have a problem with these types of reports, as they are often very flowery, and i'd be much more trusting of your report if you could upload a video of some of this happening. An unedited one please. Sorry to be so skeptical, but you see, over the years we have had issues with people writing reports like this, but for various reasons, somehow can never seem to upload a video of these things happening, or on the occasion they do, what they report and what they show seem not to quite match in terms of awesomeness.

Agony upload your most recent abysmal game play video along with your PC specs we may be able to help you. It is also difficult for us to connect with your experience when we are having such a different one. Oh and try not to use the word game it upsets folk and we do not want that.:)

You posted an informal definition of computer games, which were all about the computer part and which held no useful description of an actual game (and which failed to distinguish computer games from… oh… almost everything else running on computers).

And repeatedly, not just by me, you, AA and Tippis were asked to post a formal definition.
…and you've been provided with a bunch.

And every time you folks don't and just dismiss all definitions from every dictionary as 'absurd'.
No, that's just one more instance of you making things up that didn't actually happen — doubly so since you put those single quotes in there.
