Lost my Dangerous crew pilot...the agony of finding another good photo

Not a complaint or rage about losing npc crew to perma-death.

Nope, while it took awhile to level my harmless to Dangerous npc pilot (just here and there stuff, no dedicated camping), 99.5% of what sucks the most of losing my pilot is the semi nice photo.

Hired/fired exactly 54 pilots to get my 55th hired pilot. My stats now say 55 hired, 1 lost.

I'm off to RNG spam crew lounge to find another non-hideous looking photo.

I call it pilot tinder. I've gone through a few hundred, partially because when I find a good one I'll get rid of them if I don't like their voice. (there ought to be a verbal greeting)

I wouldn't bother if I didnt have to re-train them. But if I'm picking a pilot for life, you can bet it's gonna be a good one.

I know nothing of crew hiring.

What happens if you jump out leaving the crew member in the slf?

How do crew members die?

The entirety of what you can do / have happen to NPC crew is pretty short -

1. Hire - from any station with working crew lounge
-Harmless to Expert
-every rank other than Harmless costs you more profit share % than if you ranked them up yourself; trade off is simply ability to hire/fire as you please between missions, or keep with you permanently and level up, taking smaller profit share

2. If you jump out of system while SLF not yet docked, you lose the fighter (normal 1 fighter hangar has 6 rebuildable fighters before needing to dock and replenish)
-really pressed for time, just jump. Fighter parts are dirt cheap. Crew never in danger

3. Crew member(s) die only if both conditions are met:
a) you set them active on a ship that can take them (you can't take crew with your for example on a ship not equipped with fighter hangar module)
b) and your ship dies for any reason (combat, crash into planet, whatever)

4. Crew take X% of all profits earned in all activities you can possibly make credits in game. The difference is quite substantial as ranks progress - if you ever want more than an Expert rated pilot, you need to train them. If you're ok with Expert, just hire/fire them to minimize profit share

Each crew hired takes their own percentage. Harmless pilots are fairly unskilled and semi-useless, although there is something to be said about just being an extra target to be shot at, so they are never quite totally useless. I've only gone up to Dangerous but the difference between harmless and Dangerous is night/day and pilot I hired as Expert was within reasonable judgement call less skilled (e.g. I don't have some proof 'meter' but just swag eye ball and 'feel', even between Expert and one higher at Dangerous, I could tell my fighter was contributing more to avg fight)

5. Fire crew = never get that person back. Never as in that particular pilot, who knows if enough time and random luck goes by you won't find that same portrait and biography store attached to same name again.

6. Anything that teleports you but doesn't kill your ship won't harm your crew either (e.g. being sent to prison detention center)

7. Crew pilots can be controlled to some extent via key bindings - defend me, attack my target, etc.

My pilot, Opal Rice, earned just a few mil under ~300 million in her career with me as profit share. Then a game bug caused 1 shot from enemy NPC to pierce my shield and 1-shot my max engineered Cutter w/ armored milspec + 3 G5 reinforced hull modules....and KABOOM...no more cutter, dead crew member.

Like I said, only 0.5% upset she died from a freak bug, 99.5% exasperated I need to RNG-scum to find another NPC with livable photo. To me they are all hideously ugly.

Your netlogs should reflect this and if it was indeed due to a bug, support can restore the crew.

I might take it up with support, but I'm not really all that invested in having super elite pilot. Quite ok to re-train a new one.

Am curious what killed me though, because I'm hardly a PVP or combat min/max geared pilot and my Cutter in assassination mission config (what I was doing when killed) has ~4.4k of shields, 50/46/54 resists on shields, and max G5 milspec armor + 3 G5 class-5 hull reinforcements.

I had ~1 ring showing light dmg to shields, not even down on that ring, 2 full rings after that plus almost all my armor. I say almost because I noticed when the FDL + 2 vultures from assassin mission engaged me, I was taking some light hits right through the shields.

I figured they had phase effect mods - I believe those go right through shields or some part of dmg does, and if players can have it, why not NPCs...so far so good. Few seconds later, KABOOM...staring at death screen.

Whatever that shot was, it got through 2 full rings of shields + part of 1st ring, and 99% of my hull remaining with pretty decent armor resists for a non-pvp min/max ship. I assume my PP can't just insta-blow because of a light phase effect hit but who knows. Maybe I'll customer service this just to find out what killed me, I'm more curious about that than the npc death or rebuy.

I lost a dangerous co-pilot a while back. The replacement is up to Deadly now, but I also have an extra harmless co-pilot whose photo I liked waiting in the wings.

The ability of the random face generator to produce mostly ugly people is probably the most realistic thing in the game.

Can relate so hard.

I don't know what FDev did that resulted in those faces, but I'm pretty sure it's against the Geneva convention

All I recognize out of this mess is I know it is right time and date, saw above it my wake entry from Diaguandri to Balante, then FDL + Vulture spam attacks all over the logs, and the filter I searched on since I've been to Zhao Tzu exactly once (reason I woke up there is I had a lame 400 cr fine didn't pay off earlier so on rebuy screen I only had wake up at detention option)

Either I fell asleep for what looks like thousands of lines of FDL hits, or I'm reading this wrong. I'll send it in to cust service just to see if they can interpret and tell me what actually killed me. I can't see what looks like any kind of actual death event or kill line.

I think they're the result of genetic experiments; specifically the splicing in of potato genes.

Given incontrovertible proof that consumer affairs doesn’t exist in ED-verse - e.g. you are slightly speeding citizen, eat hot laser death! - maybe there’s some radiating side effect from jump drives and by 34th century we’re all coyote ugly.

I think they're the result of genetic experiments; specifically the splicing in of potato genes.
Nay, I believe it is merely a combination of bad station lighting and the poor food, late nights, and possibly even the multitude of artificial stimulants we subject them to. Poor dear things.
"Hey Jaquelyn Fuentes, you are awesome. Let's go get a hamburger".
"Sure, CMDR. I haven't eaten in weeks, and I am sure this is not water".
"No wonder you look emaciated and weird. Hamburgers. Now".
:)

All the faces in the game are ugly beyond random. It's like someone painted them that way. I think that this "tech" to make random faces are pre-holo-me, because otherwise it would have been using holo-me tech with probably better results.

I dunno about that. Mine were better looking until the Great Holome Scourge of 3303. That disease caused a lot of face melting in many parts of the galaxy. It even changed the hairstyles of many copilots until the cries of grief from pilots caused the Pilot's Federation to issue free hairdo certificates for affected crew.
