Ships Krait Phantom vs Asp Explorer

Interested in hearing people's opinions.

I've never really liked the AspX, something about the design, handling, etc. just never say right with me.

I switched to a DBX but couldn't have an SRV in the setup I wanted because of the limited internals. Now the discovery scanner is gone, it's freed up an internal, so I'm using the DBX for now, but I'd like something a bit bigger and longer-range.

Interested in people's opinions of the Krait Phantom as an explorer? Always liked the Faulcon Delacy ships, and I would like a longer-range explorer that has more self-sufficiency for long trips into the black... Decent jump range, repair module, SRV, etc.

How does it compare to the AspX?

I've used the Asp X for ages and whereas it's a great ship, I was ready for a change. The Phantom certainly gives me that, it is more expensive but I like the extra internals so I can fit AFMU etc. At present, I have it on a 64 ly range but I can probably get that a little higher when I have a chance to tweak. IMO, it looks and sounds great with great cockpit visuals. I'm sure some won't like it so your best bet it to give it a go and see what you think. I'd certainly recommend it.

I similarly never liked the AspX so have been using a DBX as my “long range jump” ship for over a year but not actually gone out properly exploring in it due to the constraints on internals. Was actually considering chopping in my Corvette for an explorer-conda but reckon this Krait Phantom build will see me right:

Just got a few final bits of engineering before it matches that build!

I love the Asp Explorer and flew it for over a year. The Krait Phantom however beats the Asp in everything but jump range.
My fully equipped Phantom has a base jump range of 51 ly, while my Asp Explorer does 60.

I like the free downward view of the Asp, which is very useful when playing in VR. The Phantom cockpit also features downward view, but more obscured by the control console. The extra internal slot and the excellent handling of the Phantom however is something, that makes the choice hard. My next tour will definitely be a test run for the Krait Phantom, starting today :)

I have always thought of the Asp-X as a progression up from the DBX (although I sold my Asp-X and switched back to DBX for long distance stuff as I just didn't get on with the Asp, although I do love my Asp-S). Having looked at it now, for me the Krait Phantom is another progression on from the Asp-X. I am in the market for a new armed trader, and am thinking regular Krait, but if I can get along with the new exploration dynamic then I'd say the perfect ship for it is the Krait Phantom. So I'm delighted, as I like the idea of an exploration ship, but have often used my T7 when wanting to carry more than a DBX can manage, when wanting to stay out for a long while. The Krait Phantom seems to me the larger exploration ship that many have hoped for for some time.

My armed trader is a Krait MkII: 4A engineered shield generator and some resistance boosters gives it almost 900MJ shields with 40%+ resists and its packing 2x C2 Efficient Beams, 1x C3 Overcharged MC and a pair of C3 Focused Plasma Accelerators ... which ought be enough to worry a few would be pirate NPCs ...

All that and it’s got 192T of cargo space and can land on medium pads. :)

What can I say? I've tested it in beta and now in 3.3 live. Both times I got more jump range and optional internals than in ASP X which makes Krait better exploration ship. It is now the 3rd exploration ship if you consider jump range.

Anaconda (large)
DBX (small)
Krait Phantom (medium)

Like I said it's jump range but Krait has more to it. Like a good number of internals to choose from, good place for Fuel scoop (which DBX lack off) and also speed. The only things better in ASP X are visibility and SC flight.

As for the looks, it's a matter of taste. Personally, I like Krait looks but prefer ASPX better.

Final verdict: Krait Phantom is replaced my exploration ship slot. ASPX will do another purpose now.

That sounds like exactly the build I’d go for! I have engineered mc and efficient beams on my T10 and like the combination. Hope to pick up the Krait at the weekend. Looking forward to medium pad capability, particularly post-update. Thanks for the inspirational post!

192T is great.

You can get over 192T if needed but that’s generally enough for the high paying missions (180T / 4-5 million credits) that I’ve seen coming up recently. I might have a couple of Guardian Shield Reinforcements in the C3 slots now I think of it.

I used to use a Python with a similar loadout but find the Krait more fun to fly ... and it has a central pilots seat ... and it’s cheaper! o7

Hmm, now that's a loadout I might need to try. I usually keep the size 6 shield in place and work with the rest of the module slots for cargo.

The AspX's primary advantage is that it has, by far, the best cockpit view out of all the explorers. Krait Phantom's view is decent, although you can't look straight up, nor in the top corners. And Anaconda's view is absolutely atrocious.

Asp is more maneuverable in supercruise.

Asp is also not that expensive and is really good bang for the buck overall. I've used and enjoyed the AspX for many years. Although I too will switch to the Phantom due to the lovely extra optional internals.

Not personally a fan of the DBX for long range exploration due to it's very limited optional internals, especially the class 4 fuel scoop.

Phantom sounds 1000x better than the Asp. :D

I purchased a Krait Phantom and first impressions are I like the ship. It does seem to run a bit hotter than the Asp especially when fuel scooping. I think some clean drives might take care of that.

I like that ship. its more expensive upgrade from ASP.

If you like ASP, you can stick with ASP. Much cheaper rebuy, cheaper ship. If you like Phantom Krait, move Phantom. I like both, but finally moved to Phantom. Thats what i waited for - it just looks better for me.

For exploration purpose you gain nothing and you will loose nothing if you switch. Its matter of how you like your ships looks. Money in that game in fact does not matter.

The AspX costs half of the Krait Phantom. But the Krait is worth every penny. Absolutely self sufficient in exploration and he has the right module slot sizes.
The days of the AspX have been counted. I've never liked the cockpit. Krait Phantom is the ultimate solution for everyone having enough of the AspX. :D

Really....he is great

This is roughly the build I’m using - 4A Shield generator plus a couple of Guardian Shield Boosters in the C3 internals to boost the MJ leaves the 2xC6 and 2xC5 slots for that sweet cargo capacity. This link shows a 6A power plant, which I will move to for cost savings, but I’m actually currently runnng a 7A as a hangover from when it was my combat craft and completely full of Guardian Shield Reinforcements!

I've noticed the same thing- I've got level 5 clean drives, and she's still running hot whem scooping. Looking at where else I can cut heat...

Clean drives have no positive effect when scooping. If you want to reduce scooping heat invest in low emission power plant (for exploration builds and armored for combat) or just generally reduce energy usage.

I am only using a 5A scoop even though the ship could be fitted with a 6A scoop and it still gets pretty hot in a hurry while scooping. If I can't cool her down I won't be using this ship for exploration and that requires so many stops for fuel.
