My friends don’t play elite dangerous

I discovered elite dangerous in spring ‘17 and I’ve been trying to get my friends into it ever since. Even my friends who are relatively into gaming can’t be bothered. Anyone else out there feel my pain?

Why don’t more people play this game? It’s unparalleled - it has no equal.

I want to wing up with my boys but they’re all busy killing zombies and doing whatever you do in Destiny.

It’s weird because I know there is this great community of people-shoutout to Obsidianant!-but the actual experience of playing elite dangerous sometimes still feels kind of lonely. Can anyone recommend some activities or player groups? Something? Anything? I think FDEV has to loosen its grip and let us run the galaxy a little bit more. Yeah, maybe it would be chaos. Maybe chaps would be good.

It's currently a tenner.

So point them to FD's site and show them it's only a tenner, 76% off, and that you have made a private group so you can all play together while you learn the game. Thing is ED is not a mainstream style of game. If it doesn't appeal, it just doesn't. Pushing your friends will only push them away.

If they REALLY can't take even a tenner's worth of risk on it, then there's little you can do: they don't want what Elite offers. Heck you could set up a burner email account, buy the game as a second copy on that email address, then give that email address to one of your friends most likely to play with you in a way you like. If they don't like it after trying, you still have a second account to play, so when you're comfortable, you can take one account out into the black and play in the bubble when jumping and staring at images gets stale.

Note: the offer is limited, don't know if it is still going or hen it ends. But it includes early ship paintjobs. Not great ones, but something for that account that you may not currently have.

Squadrons.

Elite has a steep learning curve and high time investment both in-game and by watching/reading "how to" posts. Most players just cant be bothered; they want their hand held and just want to be entertained.

Personally, I wish there were more games like Elite. The steeper the learning curve and the more challenge the better. I'm going to start getting into X4 in the next few days once I've finished my current Marathon Civ 6 game.

I have a few who do, but Elite is not for everyone. It has a learning curve like a vertical line, requires a good commitment of time, and takes effort to advance.

I know it’s mad isn’t it. Cowboys, fifa and Fortnite? Bores me rigid. I wish there were more excellent vr games. But it’s just ED...and then it takes some time to learn doesn’t it? I have a big time gaming mate. Won’t leave his console type games. Bought him ED but he spent an hour getting out of the station and gave up.

My most reliable friends are NPCs. Unfortunately none of them exist in this game...

I need to lay a heavy burden on your shoulders, OP. One I have been carrying for a long time now. It is this: everyone, sooner or later, discovers that the best things in life are never "popular." The good things in life take effort: effort to locate, effort to understand, and effort to master. Because of this, they are never "popular" with most people. I think Elite fits into that category. I would prefer that it stays that way, too because when people try to make something special into something popular, they usually destroy it in the process.

With that in mind, if you are a seeker, one who quests for these better things in life, prepare to have a life graced with small, intimate gatherings rather than one packed with raucous crowds. :)

Well said. I completely agree with you on that last point. Any good player groups worth checking out? I was thinking about joining distant worlds 2 but I don’t know if I want to be out in the black that long.

i think i bought like 5 or 6 copies of elite to my friends.
I know some will never play or will play very little.
But i get ++++REP with them and FD get some more credits

My best friend playes DOTA, I play Elite Dangerous.

We both refuse to play each other's game. You're not into what you're not into, man.

I have a friend who played it and liked it, but has very limited time.

Elite is not the sort of game (imho) that you can just play for an hour a day. You end up leaving with the thought that you’ve achieved nothing.
