Some more evidence to support Space Legs

In 2019 we either get space legs or planetary landings.

Either one would be good, with enough content.

Worth remembering that there was supposed to be some other content before the 4.0 release. That was dropped so it's possible we're looking at more than just the 4.0 release next year.

Maybe, I hope so, that and atmospheric landings.
In any case, anyone who saw the old first videos from David knows that the game was designed with that in mind, it's not an afterthought.
And this old video: "Elite Dangerous: The future" where David and some of the devs talk about what they would like to see in the future and most of the answers were walking in ships, in stations, atmospheric landings and so on.

My five euros says "Atmospheric Planetary Content"...

Same. Diving into gas giants, scooping it's gases, maybe even water/amonia worlds with sub-marine new SRV, barren atmospheric planets like Mars etc. In fallowing seasons planets with flora... This will enrich exploration of the galaxy, no stupid and slow walking around.

1) Have you not need to master your piloting skills not to crash during landing or stuck in mailslot or being a sitting duck during a dogfight? :)

2) Maybe you're driving to fast? Rocks on your track are obstacles and its great fun to avoid them by steering or jumping. Take a closer attention to them and treat them with respect they deserve. ;)

3) For turret aiming use EDtracker. Its great to use your head movements for aiming! Its 500% more accurate that way as well.

4) And for switching fwd/rear throttle set a non-toggle button on your hotas. You'll he able to only throttle rear if holding down the key. This option of how the coresponding key acts you can set in game's options.

5) It's clear for me you're missing a lot of fun because you never fully customised your SRV experience and you'r rushing to much. This baby can drive up to ca. 300 km/h mate. You need to be gentle with it's power.

6) And most important: TURN SRV ASSIST OFF in 1st place! It'll be way more forgiving to your throttle.

Also power management. More power isn't necessarily more good. The SRV is a bit slower and also doesn't accelerate that fast with less power to the engines, which gives you a bit more control when it is about maneuvering in those thargoid bases for example.
Like with flying, also driving has a learning curve in Elite, and can be dramatically changed by practice and trying around with the controls. Turning drive assist off, for example is awesome for driving while in turret mode, because you don't set a speed but just speed up as long as you push the button. With a throttle the SRV won't try to speed up to the set speed by all means necessary but slow down when going up a hill for example. And there are the vertical thrusters! Using those is kind of an art form, and as I have noticed, benefits from FA off flying.

And we need trains for them to wait for, and run onto. And then wait, and run off of.

that would be nice, especially if the trains were realistic and always late and stunk of sweaty socks filled with people eating their own feet.

seriously it happens...

They'll obviously have been thinking about it. I'd say Atmospheric Landings is the easier job. Although it would obviously require loads of work, you do at least know roughly what you're aiming at. Space legs feels like a whole new thing, and I'm not sure how easily you could slot it into the existing game. I wonder if a separate FPS game in the same universe might be a more manageable prospect.

One thing I've felt playing it over the past week is that the game is finally dense enough that I never feel bored. I feel like we've finally arrived at a genuinely classic game.

Yeah yeah another space legs thread... however I feel there is more evidence to support the possibility of 2019 being a space legs year.

1. Frontier seemed to have listened when it came to mining, squadrons and missions. All features the community wanted improved. Therefore using this theory Space Legs must be something FDev is heavily considering as we ask for it so often, it's also a lot less work than atmos planets.

There never was any doubt in my mind that spacelegs is under serious consideration, or perhaps there is already work being done on it. The simple reason being that FDev and David Braben himself said they wanted it on several occasions.

Personally I do not believe it should be a priority though.
I would like to see other stuff implemented first, like access to at least some types of atmospheric planets. I would like to experience atmospheric entry, weather effects and stuff like that. I would like to fly over endless green savannas, see a blue sky, see rivers and lakes and seas.

I also would like to see true volcanic activity on a big scale. I want to see lakes of fire, rivers of lava etc.

And of course I would like to be able to enter the upper atmospheres of gas giants. See some gas mining installations (Bespin) and more like that.

There is also other stuff that is much more important to me than being able to walk around:
- more variation in space station exteriors
- more SRV types
- planetary mining
- a solid npc crew mechanic ! ! !
etc.

1) yes, I have roughly 900 hours of gameplay time and I drive SRV since Horizons release with more than 1000km (according to the game stastistics) so I got my driving licence ;)
2) that's true when you're cruising, when you're dodge fighting with sentinels they're just a pain in the arrgh! And the movement is not so free.
3) I hate head trackers, I play directly in VR with Oculus Rift.
4) Of course I have it, but pressing W to go forward and S to go backward is just much faster and easier.
5) I agree, as I said it's a pain during missions in outposts and guardians structure. I would much prefer a FPS dungeon gameplay stile for these missions.
6) Off by default ;)

So yes I can see spacelegs a good improvement for planetary missions and to improve the overall game immersion by enabling walking inside and around the ship.
BUT
again, I wish for atmospheric planets for the next big content.

NOBODY ever spoke out saying they didn't want improvements to Mining, Missions, Exploration etc though did they? (At worst people suggested other priorities alongside them) Whenever Space legs are mentioned for every advocate of "Space Legs" there's another person who points out its ridiculous, a waste of Dev time and not in keeping with the core game...
There's a substantial number of anti-Space legs voices as well as pro-Space Legs voices...

Yes, but these are also the same people who believe Elite is their own personal space combat training simulation and when they win the whole game the space lizard will pick them up and take them away to be real star fighters. The rest of us give them a pretty wide berth.

I think space legs is an element of different games, first person shooters. I 'm not sure Elite should ever go that way. All additions would be great obviously, but atmospheric planets are closer to what the game is about, spaceship flying.

Whatever 2019 brings, it 's going to be fun new stuff to play for us that love this game!

You really think Frontier introduced Beyond season because "community" was asking for it? Dude, its not an indie game, ist an AAA title!

Have some trust in the development skills and many decades experience of Frontier. They gave us Beyond for to make better what already was in game and to prepare for next to come. I can assure you though "space legs" will never arrive to Elite Dangerous. Why would it? Oh wait..., I know! Coz "community" wants it! C'mon dude, grow up!:)

Beyond is just a name could have any number of updates or content. A lot of the last few patches have been things the community have wanted for a LONG time and been asking for. They didn't need to put squadrons in they could have easily just added more ships, new missions or done other stuff.

Increasing ship interior detail as the other guy in this thread said is an interesting point though.

Personally I think FPS is the wrong direction for space legs on ED to take. Star Marines was a disastrous detour for Star Citizen and I wouldn't want to see the same mistake done here. If anything I'd like to explore alien outposts, abandoned ships, and yes space stations Star Trek style. Which means a scanner, medkit and a laser pistol :)

Less is more. Start simple then iterate quickly. The other way doesn't work.

After doing some mining with the new toys I have had to revise my objections to FD introducing space legs into ED. Up until now I couldn't really see any gameplay that would benefit from it, walking around a station or even your ship would get boring really fast in my opinion and the game isn't set up for CoD in Space either.

But with the new mining mechanics I could see me in an EVA doing the abrasive mining, setting the charges whilst my collector limpets buzzed around picking up my goodies. There would be danger, you would have to get back to your ship and clear the area before the charges go off for example but I think that would add to the gameplay and not detract from it.

Anyway, my two credits on the matter.

I almost feel like Fdev might go for a holo projection of our commanders when we walk around ships.

Finally we've been told the next big part of Elite has gone into full production. Horizons was the first big change/update so with what space legs brings it's easy to argue it will be done over chapters.

Some fun speculation. The faction reps NPC's depicted in the mission board seem to also be 3D avatars with shading. It would be awesome if FD finally implemented some npc crew being able to appear in crew member chairs, as well as eventual spacelegs of the crew members and meeting the faction reps in their offices with your avatar. (or through a secure faction comm terminal within the stations)

I personally don't care about space legs either way as Elites always been a true space ship sim for me. Though as my OP concludes I think Frontier will add it because of majority of the fan base seem to be asking for it. I'd prefer more SRVs, more ships and more things to do in those first... however I can see how raiding or boarding other ships could be fun. I'm not sure how it'll work PvP wise maybe some sort of interdiction system that actually allows you to disable the ship and go into a boarding style instance.

Though I fully suspect it might be holo as stated above it makes its so much easier to implement.

Look closely on every ships rear part - even there are doors on the rear side of the ships, everyship has a ramp to let down so a lift could get down.

Not sure about that, I just bought a Beluga and don't see any stairs or lifts to get onto it.

Considering how big it is and how many people its carrying i would suggest that means space legs will never be multiplayer.

On a note about the OP's thread, and anyone else starting threads on wishes and wet dreams of space legs, please JUST BLOODY STOP IT.

Space legs will come when it's ready there is no need to keep repeating the same lines over and over again until it's here, its tedious and boring, Your not saying anything that hasn't been said before, your a record stuck in the groove.

Please find something better to do with your time.
