General / Off-Topic About equality, and ending the toxic aspects of "gamer" culture

It's good to see this finally getting some spotlight.

When gamers and studios realise that the genders should be treated and mistreated equally, it will finally be possible to immerse oneself without no influence from the gender of the toon one is playing.

I played Mass Effect 3 through 1.8 times. I couldn't finish as Femshep, as despite Biowares best intentions, the game still seemed minded at (slightly juvenile) males.

We'll get there. Keep up the good work, bloggers!

Extreme and pointless political correctness is a plague of our times I'd say.

Just keep it cool. Make games that are FUN to play. There are 7 billion people in the world. Some games will be FUN to play for SOME men and SOME women.

What is a definition of a game made for specific gender? This is just silly.

Let me say that again: extreme and pointless political correctness is a plague of our times I'd say.

Is this really the message from a mod representing Frontier on these forums?

First and foremost: I am not Frontier employee. My opinions are my own, not Frontier's.

Second: is there something wrong with my statement?

People play games for escapism, whether they're men or women. Gaming used to be the reserve of nerdy teenage boys, but in recent years it's become a valid form of entertainment for all ages, both men and women. Having political agendas and imposing certain sensibilities on how they should be made can be viewed as a form of tyranny (even if the intentions are good).

But I have trouble taking you seriously, when you make a post like this one:

It's as bewildering as young men embracing religions that want women shut away from view and covered up in public.

You're talking about Islam there, aren't you? Your attempt to take the moral high ground by showing yourself as a "modern man" does look weak when you make, what could be seen as, a stereotyped and racist remark.

Muslim women are not forced to cover themselves up. They choose to do so themselves. If any pressure is there, it's usually peer presure from other muslim women (not men). Most prefer to cover themsleves because it gives them control over their own bodies and is only for their husbands and view women who do show more of themselves rather derogatory.

It's a different culture and a different way of thinking. You should never impose your own beliefs on others, as you are doing in this thread.

Perfect. People are just people. There is no need to be trapped into gendered thinking.

No they are not. We need gendered thinking. The point is to not make one gender better than the other. A problem with the no gender attitude is that all will be cut over the same (male) comb. We need to embrace the differences and treat them on equal footing. Women aren't just differently built men. Cater to them, and make it realistic to play female personas in games, for men and women alike.

? I don't see this happening at all.
the opposite is happening I would think.
with the rise of more and more marked demand for diverse games the diverse market demand is provided.
in the beginning of gaming there where only shooters ore mazes.
now you see playing with barbys ,animals ,animated lego, farming the hole lot.
and everything in between even for all ages.
even baby software.
and even kickstarter helps to provide just what you want.
nope no problem.
just broaden your scope.

I like *****.. my wife thinks that ***** are funny

No I'm not. You are making assumptions, I'm afraid.

I have very good (granted, rather secular) Muslim friends. I've lived in Saudi Arabia as a kid, and visited the country and Jordania as a teenager. I find it ridiculous that people think Islam is somehow different than any other monotheistic religion.

***

All "socially conservative" religions want women "covered up" and restricted in what they can do. Look at (ultra) Orthodox Judaism, or Christian fundamentalists. Look at Hindus in India.

I'm equally baffled by the followers of any conservative ideology or religion. What I said was not some cryptic racism, but a honest bewilderment and head shaking for young men who seem to voluntarily embrace ideologies that seem directly against their own enjoyment, freedom and interests.

Did I spell it out enough?

It's not that difficult to understand why young men and women (let's not forget that women do this too) choose more confining ideologies. What you and I may see as an ideal world of liberal freedoms that everyone should have no problems sharing in, others may see as chaotic and decadent, and feel alienated from it.

One man's heaven being another man's hell - sort of thing.

So they find order in an ideology that they feel comfortable with, that gives them rules to live by. This is one of the reasons why they embrace such ideologies.

It's hard to believe it would happen by other ways than upbringing. You can get kids to believe almost anything, sadly

I bet there are quite a few older gamers who still haven't even heard of the whole sorry business. Here's another excellent writeup about what has been going on:

https://overland.org.au/2014/09/game-of-moans-the-death-throes-of-the-male-gamer/

in this article), I thought a more useful contribution would be some historical context. How does something as absurd as this even happen? What is so wrong with a popular medium’s culture that people legitimately think women and consumerist journalists have an agenda to deliberately ‘ruin videogames’?

I've always been somewhat repelled by the crowd at 4chan, and the misogynistic "funny memes" coming from there have done nothing to change my impression of them.
