Hardware & Technical Ripp off computer store

High street shops are finding it extremely difficult to survive because of the internet, they have had to put up prices due to having limited customers, and I know you will say the raised prices is why people use the internet instead of them but that is the way of things these days I'm afraid if you want it immediately.

Well physical shops have overheads.

It's probably acceptable to charge £1 for a cable that cost 10p.

They have rent to pay, they have bills to pay to keep the place running, they have to have stock on hand to give you your cable.

So still, the answer is maybe.

Yep been all over the news how deserted they are right now, just before Christmas. Saw numerous articles about it just this and last week actually...

PCWorld are not the cheapest out there. But in general most physical retailers prices are much more expensive than you'll get online. It's always been this way though, and having worked in retail for sometime and know some of the wholesale pricing involved for the companies to buy these sort of things in bulk (many suppliers/manufacturers require a minimum spend) the markup isn't as high as you might think. The reason online companies can offer much better prices is because they don't have expensive shops to maintain, mainly warehouses and other logistical setups. Bottom line is online companies have the space to buy a lot more so get a better deal which means they sell more so get an even better deal. Your high street retailer is stuck being only able to buy a limited quantity.

Again none of this is new though, if you need something right away then you pay the price they ask. Supply and demand if they can't make enough from selling in bigger number they make it up in bigger prices, there are enough that get sold over a period of time to justify keeping them in stock. Although there is a marked decline in high street shops for Tech related goods compared to online.

The real bottom line is don't go to PCWorld unless you really have no choice.. ;)

Sorry I misread your post and thought you were dealing with PCWorld. Yes, some small independent retailers are completely mispriced. I know of one or two that use second hand parts for repair too but are upfront about it. If he's not and you can prove it to Trading Standards then he might sort his act out.

Ha ha Trading standards... Many shops just seem front for money laundering activities..

I remember in Southend a Computer shop where they sell computers built from other part when you need sort out conflicts

Erol in Walthamstow market in 80s..

Then they invents plug and play and web which killed off the requirement.

Romford market fair is interesting.

That's the price of immediacy.

You would not believe what I had to pay for a SCSI-2 cable once. It has something to do with a blue slush-puppy and a dropped DAT drive and auditors :D

By the sounds of it then you are far from a nieve youngster then, and probably knew the type of person you were dealing with?
