Pimax 5k+ play Elite impressions

I just got my pimax 5k+ yesterday and I wanted to share how Elite looks and plays. Elite is pretty much the only game I play regular in VR. Before the Pimax I played on a DK2, OG Vive, and most recently a Vive pro. I didnt have any issues getting it setup, took a about 5 minutes.

My first impression was pretty bad. On the vive pro I play with the gamma all the way down. I love deep blacks. The Pimax black levels are pretty terrible imo. This is most noticeable when you are just looking out into the black. When you have some real bright objects in view its helps you perceive the grays more as black. I played for about 10 minutes this way, but I couldnt take it. I was about to pack it up and sell it. In a last ditch effort to make everything look better I did something that was counterintuitive, I put the gamma all the way up to the max. Personally, it looks way better on the pimax at max gamma. The blacks are gray still but with higher gamma it helps separate the objects more in the scene and highlights the headsets major strength.

I was shocked at the clarity of everything. The sweet spot in focus is huge compared to the vive. Elite looks amazing being so clear, even when I bumped settings to low I still loved the look. I settled on Vr medium at the end of my play session. Performance isnt too bad on my 1080ti, I still have tweaks to do. All the text and things in the far distance look great. Huge improvement.

Now the FOV. At first I was so focused on the awful black levels while playing that I didnt give a crap about the FOV. After I made my adjustments the FOV was impressive, and does really help add to the immersion of being there. I thought the FOV would be what wowed me but its more the sharpness and clarity of the screen. There are some downsides to the FOV. You probably have heard people mention distortion in the edges. Some can see the distortion some don't. I definitely can see it. It kinda looks like a fish eye distortion near the very edges on the left and right when turning your head. Personally I found it slightly annoying, but as I played I got used to it.

So overall looks like a I have a new headset to play Elite. I would recommend the headset for Elite as long as you can live with loosing black levels and a bit of edge distortion. I think what you gain is worth those sacrifices.

If you guy/gals have any questions let me know. I know prior to getting the headset I was searching for impression of Elite on the 5k and couldnt find much. Here to help :)

Thanks for posting this. I currently play on vive pro with gear vr lens mod and am very happy with everything except fov. Expecting 5k+ in January and was expecting to see similar clarity with lesser blacks but hoping wide fov trumps all. Will remember to adjust gamma. Recent posts on pimax forum are suggesting some have found a way to massively reduce distortion.

OP. Spot on. Thanks for the update. I wear glasses, so will probably not notice the distortion as I have to look straight ahead anyway. Do you have much light leakage? What's the comfort like please?

Increasing the gamma setting was the best thing for me. Did it a few months ago after reading a post in this thread. No more god rays and there are still deep blacks in the background. I use a Rift with the spud regedit fix (look it up). Thank you for the review.

Thanks for info, I have been watching the birth of primax and have wondered if 5kplus was good with ED, I play this in the main also.
I want VR, but I want good clarity and wide fov

How many recievers do you have or recommend

There is some light leakage near my nose. I play with the lights off so this doesn't really bother me. Although overall I would say its not bad, about the same as the rift. I played for about 2 hours straight, its more comfortable than I expected. Its not as good as the vive pro for comfort. It's more comfortable than the original vive if that helps as a comparison.

I have two OG vive receivers, and have no issues with tracking. Not sure on how 1 receiver will be. If you are looking for FOV and clarity I think the pimax is the best compared to vive pro, rift etc.

I just got my pimax5K+ few days ago and agree with everything you said. Next time I will try to put gamma at max and see if it will help me with the gripe I have with blacks. Mind you the blacks are non-issue on brighter games

I have 5k plus and Today I appled tone mapping from Dr Kaii profiler. The one I like the most is called “Realistic Very Dark tone mapping by Dr Kaii” It really helps with black colors and improved saturation on this device . I like ED VR again with my Pimax.

I don't understand how that can be since tone mapping no longer works !?!! You can verify this by seeing that you cannot enable the checkbox for tonemapping(it is greyed out too).
Dr.Kali's response to this:
"Yes that's why. Also, I just tried fiddling around with the new settings for a while but haven't been able to get Tone Maps working again. So yeah, looks like that was a nice thing while it lasted! I'll keep trying as always and feel free to email community@frontier.co.uk to ask them POLITELY to bring it back"

Yeah for a long time the gamma scale was broken for VR.

But that was fixed at least a year ago and now the default setting is the best option.
Anything else will either wash out everything into a grey blur or crush it into blacks and white.

Still playing around but the focus is slightly off ( I think because I wear glasses ) ... I need to adhoc a way to make the padding thicker...
