I just got my pimax 5k+ yesterday and I wanted to share how Elite looks and plays. Elite is pretty much the only game I play regular in VR. Before the Pimax I played on a DK2, OG Vive, and most recently a Vive pro. I didnt have any issues getting it setup, took a about 5 minutes.
My first impression was pretty bad. On the vive pro I play with the gamma all the way down. I love deep blacks. The Pimax black levels are pretty terrible imo. This is most noticeable when you are just looking out into the black. When you have some real bright objects in view its helps you perceive the grays more as black. I played for about 10 minutes this way, but I couldnt take it. I was about to pack it up and sell it. In a last ditch effort to make everything look better I did something that was counterintuitive, I put the gamma all the way up to the max. Personally, it looks way better on the pimax at max gamma. The blacks are gray still but with higher gamma it helps separate the objects more in the scene and highlights the headsets major strength.
I was shocked at the clarity of everything. The sweet spot in focus is huge compared to the vive. Elite looks amazing being so clear, even when I bumped settings to low I still loved the look. I settled on Vr medium at the end of my play session. Performance isnt too bad on my 1080ti, I still have tweaks to do. All the text and things in the far distance look great. Huge improvement.
Now the FOV. At first I was so focused on the awful black levels while playing that I didnt give a crap about the FOV. After I made my adjustments the FOV was impressive, and does really help add to the immersion of being there. I thought the FOV would be what wowed me but its more the sharpness and clarity of the screen. There are some downsides to the FOV. You probably have heard people mention distortion in the edges. Some can see the distortion some don't. I definitely can see it. It kinda looks like a fish eye distortion near the very edges on the left and right when turning your head. Personally I found it slightly annoying, but as I played I got used to it.
So overall looks like a I have a new headset to play Elite. I would recommend the headset for Elite as long as you can live with loosing black levels and a bit of edge distortion. I think what you gain is worth those sacrifices.
If you guy/gals have any questions let me know. I know prior to getting the headset I was searching for impression of Elite on the 5k and couldnt find much. Here to help
