Let's talk chat, FD

Frankly, it sucks.

1) Every time someone comes online or goes offline, now not only do I get a text message (which clogs up the chat window), but I get an audio ping that sounds like an incoming message from a friend. I need neither of these things. If I want to see who is on or offline, I will quickly check the friends list on my comms panel.
2) System chat - Don't care. I don't care what channel I've entered or exited. How about just displaying the current chat channel in the system chat subpanel, instead of listing them as historical notifications?
3) I have this distinct feeling that with the clogging of the chat panel, that direct messages between friends are being lost. And the seemingly bugged, persistent "inbox" indicator is evidence.
4) Auto-target chat has been removed. This was a poor choice - when I target someone, my chat should automatically default to a direct message to that player. Until they are out of the instance.
5) As Cosmo and Hacker pointed out below - things like NPC sysauth messages should also be in their own subpanel. Quite simply, my default chat window should display only chat between me and other commanders.

The chat panel used to work fine. Please make it work fine again.

Vin.

*edit* Update, I just learned that you can turn off notifications in the chat configuration menu by setting them to hidden. So far, no online/offline messages and no chat channel messages have been clogging my DM window. Much better - It's like it used to be. Now I can handle the odd comm from npc auth ships and such.

Now just look into the possibly broken player-player comms and I'm good.

Best we can do is bug report it or suggest it, and give them time.

Still, I'm very happy with the state of the game.

I work alone & commonly get no chat messages from friends in the game in a session. I still see the persistent indicator, they usually accumulate in pairs. tbh I had assumed they were from systems I had jumped away from before whatever 'fly safe commander' flight control message had time to display.

The only method of chat I commonly use is to target another player & o7 them, this no longer seems to work consistently & the messages go to local.

Still, first world problems :) Presumably it works better now for some playstyle I don't do. I like that the e-mail inbox no longer shows me a message saying 'this message is no longer relevant' and just doesn't show the group header once it's children have been deleted.

There are so many little things like this about this game that defy logic. I love this game but I just don't understand the design decisions that go into it. So many areas that have not been capitalized on and this game has been out for years.

Seconded. Unnecessary chat messages should be removed or at least have an option to disable it.

Big MMOs don't have such unnecessary chat spam.

I'm throwing my lot in with this too.

We also don't need "Generic Helmet #1" to show which un-interactable NPC is currently leaving a message.

Keep the visuals for the CMDRs or let me talk to the NPCs. But only if they have something to say. No, scratch that, just visuals for the CMDRs.

That there are. The game has come a long way, but there are still little nuances that just make no sense from a QOL or gameplay perspective.

Totally agree here. As much as I like Beyond 3.3, the chat drives me nuts and has worsened considerably. Only thing I dislike in Beyond, to be honest.

Agreed!

And while they're at it, get rid of the spam on the other side too...

I'm pretty sure two conversations between yourself and I have been lost into the ether so far, Vin.

Chat is a mess, and it seems it barely works. Sending messages to friends and reading their replies should be one of the most reliable and robust parts of that panel up top. It isn't.

Yep - I thought that's what happened yesterday. Chat is totally borked as far as I can tell.

And even when friend chat does actually get delivered, it shouldn't be washed out by hundreds of online/offline and whatever other automated messages. Those should be in their own panel, with actual player-player chat taking the priority.

OP amended with this and other observations/suggestions.

The chat has never been very good anyway. I loath to write anything longer to it as it seems to randomly cut me off for whatever incomprehensible reason if I spend too much hunting and pecking around my desktop HOTAS. Also, why it can't be used in the multi-crew gunner view or this new FSS scanner view? They must assume everyone uses the voice.

You think they changed that deliberately?
I sure hope not, as this would be utter bo**ocks.
I wouldn't even know how to direct message someone now, as prefixes (like /t) don't work either...
Even filed a bug report but it didn't get much attention so far:

Well this is just like the multicrew system, a mess. I really try to understand what is going on over at FD you know? Like is there just one guy working on stuff in a basement who just doesn't really know how to do anything? Is FD working on some super secret project that they are going to unveil as a reason to why all this little stuff doesn't get addressed? I'm so confused
