Mamba, still dissapointing...

I tried to like it, might sell mine. Needs to be a super icourier, it feels more like a FDL with a spoiler and racing stripes... if you get my meaning.

I bought one last night and I will say that she FEELS great to fly in general. No ship I have ever flown has given me the same "Hot Rod" kind of feel that the Mamba gives me. Its just a fun ship to putt around in. Though it has its own set of issues.

My thoughts so far

Pros

- Handles like a dream in Supercruise. (Then again my main ship is a Conda so take that with a grain of salt I guess)

- The cockpit placement and layout makes you feel like you are in a sports car. You FEEL like you are strapped to a rocket ship.

- The hardpoint placement is top notch. I always find myself with my enemies above me and having all the hardpoints on the top of the ship is great.

- The speed is fantastic

- Easily the best looking ship in the game and its not even close

Cons

- Heat is a constant issue for me right now because I haven't been able to fully engineer her

- The handling is straight butt for a ship of its size and speed. Yeah its fast in a straight line, but the moment you try and turn it fights you every step of the way even with DD3.

Thats all I got so far. But then again I only have about 6 hours in her so far.

Just shipped mine through all the relevant Engineers (still lacking a few grades, though) and found a nice little system where I hope to try her out. Heat? What heat? It might become an issue in combat, but neither planetary flight nor fuel scooping has been a problem. My racing Sidey runs both faster and hotter.
As far as handling goes, that's what a race ship is doing. You have to convince her to take a corner. Handbrake and boosters. My bigger issue is that I can't even guess where I'm going when landing. It's all instrument flight on those critical last 20 meters down.

Oh and for the love of god any new pilots of the Mamba you need to realize that while your ship is fast as hell and FEELS small it is in fact bigger than the Krait.

So watch the mail slot!

I will admit that it takes a while to get used to and I have parked her up once or twice in sheer frustration.

As Morbad said, don't treat her like a Lance, work to her strengths and you have a really superb ship with its own unique vibe which is to be applauded from a design perspective.

I found the mamba to be a superb strike ship, hiding with low sig and zooming in fast for a deadly blow, just to vanish again by superb cooling and usage of speed.
It also has a combination of hardpoints that allows to be used as a large ship disposal service, a.k.a. bomber.
When i tried the mamba in the beta i didn't have the engineered parts to feel it for real, but when thinking outside of my self designed toolbox space, i found the mamba to be the best basis building something like a GAT-12 blastboat on.

The FDL is a heavy fighter, this thing is a hit and run low profile bomber.

I think it not nerfed enough. hold your horses, not by speed or heat or whatever, I think it could have been rebalanced differently to play as a very different ship. Here's an idea

Under nose hardpoints and close cockpit so that gimbals have limited arcs, making fixed guns the "only choice". You then race toward your opponent face to face, firing until you blow past and extend until you have space enough to turn around slowly to then race back the other way shooting in a game of lazer light chicken screaming "TODAY IS A GOOD DAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DIE!!!!"

A very different combat style from other ships. Nancy boys can use chaff on the extend if they like.

So if it were nerfed with weapon placement, speed increased but manoeuvring decreased, it would play very differently from all other combat ships apart from, to a small extent, the viper 3. Still not everyone's cup of tea, but there could be moonshine drinkers out there.

I assume you're talking about mines, but what about loading it up with flechette launchers? They stack nice enough on the FDL, and the Mamba is even more suited to popup attack runs.

so what are these targets people are talking about where there is zooming in striking fasy destroying and taking off and bombing runs. How are you finding so many harmless sidewinders to kill.

Indeed ... any target worth a jot (in either credits or just the fun of the challenge) will be far from dead from a single “boom and zoom” approach. Plus, if you do fly off to recharge shields and then come back, the NPCs frequently just de-spawn making it doubly pointless.

Maybe a good solution for Mamba to find its niche is to have class 6 thrusters instead of 5. Otherwise, a full combat build will still have under 600 m/s boost fully engineered.

This was pretty widely discussed and requested during beta. For a race inspired ship that has a ridiculously large hit box due to thrusters. having class 6 thrusters ,meaning weight isn't a factor would be an interesting niche.

Or course if they do this and I fly it I may change my mind again. Statistics and feel are very different beasts
