What's the anti murder-hobo trading-build meta for CGs in Open?

Sure, wings are always going to be tough, but there are loads of options - all you need to do is survive long enough to hiwake.
For running rares to CGs, I use a fast, shielded, and armoured build for my AspX, and it does alright: https://s.orbis.zone/1e39
For regular trade CGs I use an armoured Python, similarly built with1000+ shield and 2000+ hull, it does alright too.
Sure, they're both limited for cargo: 64t and 192t, but they get to station safely.

A similarly built Orca (c6 biweaves, reactives + 2 c2 hrps) will boost faster, have greater range, and more cargo space than a Clipper.
Full laden range is over double.

The Orca will have slightly better shields, the Clipper slightly more hull, in similar amounts.

Bonus points for Orca:
Boost chime(!!!)
Smaller frontal area = easier to navigate mailslot
No rank requirement

Clipper is a cheaper hull.

Why don't you start off by showing us what you're flying now?

Excellent suggestion. Thanks!

Was using this as a bubble explorer/mission runner before increasing its cargo capacity for the latest CG. Figured it would make a decent CG hauler but wasn't fast enough to outrun a Federal Assault Ship after interdiction. Probably the wrong ship for the job, but I enjoy flying the Phantom (dying in it is less fun).

Yeah, you're definitely getting killed in that.

The following video is a very good place to start. Give me some time to go buy some christmas whiskey and I'll give you a build with engineering advice.

What engineers do you have access to?

Honestly I must have seen this video a dozen times and I still always click on it and it still always makes me laugh. The robotic voice makes it I reckon, just class. Good advice too, but whatever about that.

Dude, it's hilarious. I've watched it god knows how many times :D

After a quick glance:
- to slow to run
- not enough hull for a hybrid hull tank
- forget any thought about silent running in 3.3
- extremely weak shields for a PvP encounter if you don't exactly know what and why you are doing it

Other than that, at first you will have to make a decision how you want to deal with hostile players. The ship load out is the final step. If you get interdicted by an other player you already made some decisions - knowingly or not - that have an impact on the outcome.
Then make plans for every type of encounter and train your plans.

And finally, getting blown up is part of it. Learn from it, no matter how annoying it might be. Maybe use a screen recording software and then analyze your mistakes.

Good luck out there.

What speed is needed, more or less, to outrun meta hobo-murderers?

A Cutter. Fully engineered, 6a prismatics. Can carry 728t.
I've been interdicted in mine by wings of gankers (sometimes several wings at once) literrally hundreds of times.
Noone came even close to destroying it.

This.

I got a mention on some Reddit "ED cheats" thread (a year or so ago) 'cos apparently my PP didn't go offline like it was supposed to.
Personally, I think the guy responsible just made that claim to save face 'cos he only actually hit me a couple of times with whatever he was firing at me and it had little to no effect.

My Cutter's nothing "special".
C6 Prismatic shield c/w G5 thermal, light-alloy hull c/w G5 HD armor, 8A DD5s, C5 MRP/HRP and, erm, 4x HD5 SBs and 4x RA5 SBs.
Don't especially enjoy flying it but it gets the job done.

I'm a Count at 8 percent. Cutter sounds fab but not able to buy one just yet.

Well, that depends on their build: heavy hull tank, medium weight hybrid, light weight long range...
For some basic ideas have a look at the boost speeds of the PvP builds Bob has posted in this thread and compare them to yours.
As for mine, I posted my CG AspX (boosts to 540). My medium size combat ships include Chieftain (530); Krait (525); and Clipper (600). I have an unfinishe Mamba that should do 600. Can you run from any of those?

If it was me, I'd probably have something like this instead: https://s.orbis.zone/1e4i

And I say got for broke. You don't need a vehicle hangar, don't need weapons. You have one job - to get your commodities to market.

Military Bulkheads - https://s.orbis.zone/1e4l
Reactive Blukheads - https://s.orbis.zone/1e4m

These are good base builds to start from. You can change things like a long range FSD, or add a scoop, change the countermeasures, go for resistances over MJ/HP. Whatever suits you.

Determined folks still have a chance to kill you, but it's a smaller chance. Especially if you follow that guidance in Rinzler's video.

I personally wouldn't be caught dead in one of those fancy imperial monstrosities.

But oysters and snails, you know?

With that build, would you run or fight?

100% run, from PvP at least.

Thing is, it's not worth trying to do things by halves.

You have the weapons and shield for fighting but the rest of your ship isn't going to help with that.
Assuming you don't actually intend deliberately engage in PvP, you might as well get rid of the power-hungry weapons which also generate a lot of heat and also fit a stronger shield.
Get rid of the PAs and you don't need the HSL so you can fit another SB instead.
It's doubtful the chaff launcher will be much use against a skilled attacker so you can bin that too, in favour of another SB (or, possibly, a PDT).
Bi-weave shields are great for combat because they recharge quickly.
If you're not planning on sticking around to fight, you're better off with an A-rated or prismatic shield.
They'll take longer to recharge once they take hits but they offer more strength for single attacks.
And, of course, with a bunch of SBs you also have massively improved resistances to further reduce the consequences of an attack.

The MCs and lasers will be sufficient fo almost any NPC that you'd probably want to do combat with and the SRV can stay if you like having it.

If you want to engage in PvP, OTOH, you'll need to bin all the cargo racks, throw a bunch of HRPs/MRPs and, perhaps, GSBs at your ship and forget about actually participating in the CG.
Cos that's how the ships you'll be going up against will be outfitted.
