Still no new SRV models?

We've had the same SRV since landable planets were introduced with Horizons. Why?

Now I'm not complaining about the SRV we have, it's a pretty awesome implementation but why no new ones?

I can see a gap for at least three more:

1. Racer... Fast & Furious with ABS & Traction! Additional yaw thrusters.

2. Heavy Cargo/Miner. 6 tonne cargo capacity, requires 2 bays. Possible other abilities to exploit surface deposits.

3. Heavy Assault. Better shields, armour and weapons. Possibly also seeker missiles. Ability to access data points from greater range (possibly by using drones). Better thrusters, possibly including auto-hover. Again one vehicle requires a double slot.
I'm imagining this one for those +++ security base scanning jobs.

I'm sure there's other and better examples but let's get FD to give us some more toys, it's Christmas after all! :D

My choice for the first new SRV would be a mining rig that can carry more cargo. I think with all the new mining features a mining SRV would be great. I like your other ideas too.

I try to visualize how a ship can carry a larger SRV and figured it would require the two bay hanger in lieu of the single bay version (door size may be a factor I suppose).
I don't drive around on planets much except to surface prospect when I have to have mats for engineering. I would like to be able to have a new probe to launch from the SRV (or ship while exploring the surface at low altitude) that would bury itself into the surface and analyze the area around the probe for minerals and materials. If you get a good result, deploy the rig and mine away. I don't like surface prospecting so this is idea is just selfishness on my part.

I don't have a clear vision of a different type of SRV that has different strengths & corresponding weaknesses compared to the current Scarab.

The current one is fast enough for what I want it to do, if I need to get from A to B faster I'll take the ship instead so a faster way to deploy from and rejoin the ship would be good, particularly in situations where I'm under attack.

Being able to carry more than two cargo units would certainly be useful, I'd accept compromises like not having scanners/guns/turret equipped, as well as severely reduced jump boosting, but it'd still need to be able to save itself from being stuck on the landscape.

I'm not sure about a heavily armed & armoured combat variant, if I could interact with & have my ship provide covering fire I think that would be enough for me.

So if I were to choose one additional variant I'd go with a truck that could carry more cargo.

Three new SRVs

1. Slower than the original SRV but can carry four tons of cargo. Think Nomad from Mass Effect.
2. Faster than the original SRV but can only carry one ton of cargo.
3. Guardian/human hybrid SRV that hovers above the ground. Has same top speed as orginal SRV, can carry two tons of cargo and the cargo racks are corrosive resistant.

I want this:

I doubt we'll get more than 2-tons SRVs because otherwise the Ram-Tah Missions becomes laughable.
Granted, it's not much to go on, but that's all the 2 cents I have.

Still no new SRV's.
Why? Because there's no new content to warrant new SRV's.

I want some new SRV's too.
Something with a coring drill to take samples.
Something that floats, like a skimmer, so I have options.
Or at the VERY LEAST, Outfitting, so I can choose to swap my dual PR's for a missile rack, or something else entertaining.

But there needs to be something else to do with them as well.

Right now, there's not. I want to see NPC's running around in SRV's too. I'd love to see some deploy from garages around Outposts when I start making trouble. I want to chase down fleeing bad guys and blow them to bits. I want to make more detailed scientific studies of exoplanets. But without the foundation, new and innovative SRV's leave too much to be desired. Aren't we tired of half-implemented features yet?

Thought about that, simple solution - no Data Link on it. Doesn't matter what you're hauling, if you can't interact in that manner.
So give us something else instead - like a high-resolution scanner, or a coring drill to take core samples, to analyse and sell, or deliver as mission cargo.

I think the fact SRVs deploy from the cargo hatch, whilst being a great idea to allow them to be ubiquitous regardless of ship choice, has limited the options of coming up with something that is

  • Sufficiently different to be something different vs a variant which the forum hates
  • The right dimensions to be stable for travel at a reasonable speed in the range of gravities planets have
  • And yet still be small enough to fit in the Cargo Hatch

Perhaps with Water worlds, a mini sub but I dont see heavier vehicles fitting out the cargo hatch, and it isnt like there is much of the Scarab one can remove to make room for the mining or tanks suggested.

Whilst more SRV types would be great. I think first it would need NPC SRVs and local SRV missions.

E.g: land at a base and deliver something to a nearby outpost via SRV. Experience SRV to SRV encounters along the way.

A key requirement to make that work, and so open up deeper ground-based gameplay would be some way to require you to be in an SRV instead of a ship.

Might be tough to get that to work though? Maybe no fly zones with heavy AA? Or just make using an SRV a mission. Requirement and somehow explain it away?

Deployment from the cargo hatch does not mean they HAVE to be so limited. In fact, a larger SRV could be deployed, if it were deployed in "stages" - the main drive unit deployed first, followed by a connecting unit, to capacity additional cargo. Once the first unit is deployed, you are given a message to clear the loading area, which allows the second module to deploy. You then back up to connect to it, and off you go, in a larger vehicle. To return, the process is simply repeated in reverse, pulling the second module into position, allowing it to be returned to storage, followed by the primary module, which returns you to your ship. This would make dual-bay SRV hangers a necessity, one for the primary SRV, one for the attachment, each sold separately.

Reminds me a little of Big Trak

I'd love a few variations of the SRV, planetary mechanics could use some love.
