the FSS, watching paint dry....

I've never been much of an explorer, the whole process got tedious for me quickly, leaving me a few K LY out and dreading the return back. A few days ago I fitted out my Phantom for a good jump range and headed into the black. The new FSS and DSS were so enjoyable I found myself closer to Colonia than the bubble, and decided to just move on over. The changes have opened up game play for me that I previously had no desire to put myself through. Four more pinned blueprints will be nice too, for whenever I head back home.

It’s the combination of VR and HOTAS that’s irritating. I used HOTAS in 2D without any issues, but for some reason in VR, the system map starts zoomed in, and even when zoomed out fully, the cursor seems to move slower than in 2D. I think it’s because the system map is actually displayed in 3D, and some “compromises” were made to get it to work in VR.

What graphics setting do you have the galaxy map set to? That may influence your 3D map draw speed. It took a little while for me to get set up for HOTAS & Rift, but it did all come together in the end. The worst culprit for slowing things down is the 'jump' lines in well-populates star areas, but that is the same in 2D for me also.

I've been thinking about the portrayal of exploration in ED and how it is done in real life currently. The thing is: Space exploration IS pretty damn boring most of the time by virtue of all the useless rocks that are out there. That's why even today it is largely automated. Telescopes map the sky by themselves, humans just look at the data and skim it for unusual signals. Which is by and large what we do in ED as well. The problem, in my eyes, is that there is nothing very unusual to find with the FSS or the old method. You could easily automate the process both IRL and in the game.
I'm thinking the FSS should return a more fuzzy picture of the system you're currently in and allow for unusual signals that the player has to track with more specialized tools in order to move away from the honk-and-zoom we have now. You can still do that, quickly honk a system and map the usual rocky bodies and ice balls but if you want to find really unusual discoveries you'd have to look between the frequencies so to speak, for things that the FSS doesn't pick up very well by virtue of being a machine. Phenomena are a step in the right direction regarding this but they are still part of the honk-and-zoom system.

I would be back to ED if I could revert to pre-3.3 through the launcher. I have no need of these new redundant ships, overlighting, POI breadcrumbs, stupid arcade minigames and other void opal-things.
Just give me back my beautiful space exploration game, which you spoiled so badly after I bought it, FD !
Until that, X4 and Dual Universe are great for me !

I can't even tell if you're being serious or not.
