Launch from Oculus Home not loading

Brand new to VR in general but I can do basic tech checking before asking for help.

Oculus is freshly installed and up to date, ED is up to date and I linked the Partner key from my account page to the Oculus account, launching from my regular desktop results in the game loading on the display as normal, launching through the Oculus Home leads to a static loading image and no interface. I can hear the game loading from the music, but no title screen ever appears. I've looked around and not found an issue like this described and similar issues' resolutions have not worked for me.

It'll take FDev about a month to respond to any tickets submitted around this time and I'd really like this up and running before the Jan. 13th launch of Distant Worlds 2 which I am signed up for. So I am turning to the community. Please skip the stupid early steps like "have you tried turning it off and on again" or "restart your computer" or "reinstall everything" as these are steps I've already tried. I'm looking for detailed support, not entry-level. Thank you in advance.

Edit: Searching has said that I need to switch the 3D settings to HMD, but there is no HMD option available.

Sounds like your pc is seeing your hmd as a second monitor, but Elite is not set to display to the hmd. Try opening Elite, then on the desktop, open the display settings, select 'identify', your desktop is most likely display 2. Try turning off display 1, or making display 2 your main display. Then you should see the Elite window, go into options and change graphics settings in Elite to "HMD Headphones " or speakers if you are using a separate set of headphones etc...

Let me know how you go...

Elite was on the main display to begin with. Unplugged #2 and tried loading the game from the standalone launcher, in desktop mode from the Oculus software and from the Rift itself. Method 1 and 2 loaded the game on the screen as usual but still no HMD option and now there is no Secondary screen for it to switch to. Method 3 was the static loading image again but this time the Oculus screen shut off for about a minute giving me a heart attack in the process.

ED is an officially supported game, so unplugging screens every time can't be the way it's supposed to work.

Are you starting Elite from the oculus home app?

If you right click on the game icon in the Oculus Library, do you get the option to start in VR?

If not, then edit your json startup file and make sure it looks like this.. The json file is called frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous.json.mini do a search and make sure the text at the bottom is the same as below..

"launchParameters": "ED /vr /autoquit",

the incorrect line will read ...

"launchParameters": "ED",

Once you have edited this line, save the file, don't change the name, then restart the PC, or just the Oculus service. After the restart, try elite again.. This seems to be a common bug that a few of us worked out and the above has worked for many people.. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...version-of-Elite-no-longer-bypassing-launcher

From the desktop app, I can launch in VR. Makes no difference there.

Found the .json.mini file, it already reads "launchParameters": "ED /vr /autoquit",

OK perfect :), So if you open in desktop mode, you cannot select the VR option? Can you select Primary or secondary monitor ? These options are in the same place as the HMD option etc... Can you take a screen shot of the options in the 3d tab in Elite graphics settings?

I can select the VR option, it just stalls at a static image in the HMD but I can hear the game loading from the music.

In-game, launched in desktop mode, I can switch between Primary and Secondary monitors. The 3D options are the Anaglyph (stupid red/blue thing) and the Side-by-Side. No HMD option. Switching from Primary to Secondary just moves the game to the other screen.

Have you gone into Oculus settings and allowed unknown sources?

I have no other games installed into Oculus Home, and I have allowed unknown sources.

Again, the game is loading because I can hear it, it's just not displaying anything other than a static image.

Edit: Downloaded DRKaii's EDProfiler and it has HMD as a 3D option, but selecting it did not help.

It is very weird that your HMD is not showing as an option. I had a simil;ar issue when I first installed, it was quite a while ago, so my memory is not very good... I remember playing with the display settings until it worked, but cannot remember exactly what I did.

What I do remember trying..

Windows P and change to duplicate displays...
Opening the Display panel and moving the 2 displays around
Set to detect displays then identify...

Once I did the above, again very long time ago so I have probably missed some things, I had the option under display to select the HMD ( Speakers ), I use external headphones etc..

Well, either that trick no longer works or the missing steps were crucial, as that did not help. Is there any way for you to send me your graphics config file and I'll look at the differences?

You also need to go into Elite -> Options -> Graphics and select VR HMD headphones. Though if you can't get into Elite that might be an issue...

If I were you, I'd install a free game/demo (google maps perhaps) via oculus home and check your HMD works as expected. If you report back after you've done that, I'll see what I can do.

I have done this and the HMD works just fine with Subnautica through SteamVR and LoneEcho an Oculus native game. ED is just not working no matter what is tried.

As I have said, that option is not available when I do launch the game in desktop mode.
Do you not have this option in your graphics settings?

The pulldown menu will show something else initially though, but the 3D setting and the option to change it to "HMD (Headphones)" should be there even in desktop mode afaik.

EDIT: Note that clicking the game from within Oculus Home does not work at the moment! You need to launch it from the desktop (outside of VR or via the virtual desktop), but it will still show up in the Rift. Unless they've magically fixed it and I haven't noticed

For the last time "HMD (headphones)" is not an option in my graphics settings. The analygraph and side-by-side are there, but not that one. Please stop asking questions I've already given the answer to multiple times.

Also NONE of the launch options work for VR. Within Home, from the Oculus desktop app, through steam. None of them.

The option to change to the hmd will not be there if you start the game in desktop mode, it will only be there if you start the game in VR mode. The issue is that your computer is seeing the hmd as a second monitor instead of the hmd..

Did you try all of the options I gave you? The fix is definitely within the display settings area as mine did he exact same thing. I just cannot remember exactly what I did to fix it.. Sorry. It was quite a while ago and it only took 5 minutes etc..

I know this is th issue as you can see the static screen within the hmd and hear the game but cannot see it.

Try starting the game in VR mode, then when the static screen is showing, adjust your display settings on computer desktop to turn off the second monitor, or try using the keys "windows Key + Shift + left arrow " if your hmd shows to the right of your main monitor in display settings. For this to work, the game must have focus, press and hole "Alt" then single press "Tab" to elect the game window, then use the key sequence above " Windows + Shift + left or Right Arrow " to move the game window to your desktop monitor...
