Balls of Energy in Alaunus - Science Needed

Re: science - I did spent a quite foolishly large amount of time trying to scoop the thing up. I don't know, something about the cargo scoop targetting mechanism just made me really sure I could do it if only I could push past the repulsion that occurs when you get close. Anyway, I didn't manage it. Probably just as well ... god knows what it would have done once inside my ship!

Well, like Mr. Edison once said: "I didn't fail 2,000 times to make a working light bulb. I managed to find 2,000 items that aren't right for this thing."

Sometimes, finding what DOESN'T work is as important as what DOES. And yeah, putting something that highly charged in your cargo hold might have had some rather .... unusual effects (Wow, I can jump 5 billion light years! Wait, who hit the "charge" button??? That wasn't me!!! Oh, gawd, I'm heading to Andromeda. With no way baaaaaaaaak ..... <poof>).

"Klaatu... verata... n... Necktie. Nectar. Nickel. Noodle."

Did you say the words?

Basically, Yeah, well, I said them. I might not have pronounced each and every word exactly, but yeah, basically.

I was just in the Alaunus system this evening. This is one of those new things found there ("It's life, Jim, but not as we know it"):

Don't get any closer than 174 meters or it sends out an electrical shock that brings your power down almost immediately and if not careful you'll find yourself without shields within seconds. Sort of like an electric eel.

Here's the need for SCIENCE: Noise. There's an odd noise in the background. If you get your ship within 200 meters, you can use the external camera to get really close to it. Listen carefully. You'll hear a pattern in the noise. It's very, very subtle. I don't want to go around with a tin-foil hat here, but there might be one of those imbedded pattern in it. I don't have the software to check this sort of thing but after the last time when images were picked out of a noise in the game, I wouldn't doubt if FD did this again.

Again, not sure, but someone with the software should go out there, record this thingy and see if we've been given another puzzle.

Any chance someone can make a recording of the noise and post it here? I'd like to hear it.

"Collective Oversight System". Bleeding database group name with wrong item name leaked, messed indexes and overlapped. Bug occurs when the target is scanned. Dam.

Argh!! All that "Science" for nothing. Well, maybe not 'nothing' as we did find out what the cause of this anomaly was, I guess. Once again, Science, FTW.

I don't have a you tube channel or I would have. As I suggested earlier, someone with the software also needs to wash it through one of those spectrum analyzers and see if FD squished a pattern in there. It certainly sounds like something might be there, like when the first image was discovered.

UPDATE: Did try to record the session with Shadowplay - getting a loud buzzing sound in the background on the audio. I miss my old Sound Blaster card.

Anyone tried hitting this thing with a research limpet yet?

Good suggestion. I'm going to head back out there today.
That's one of those "tissue sample collecting" ones, right?

UPDATE: For the record, the controller says "No valid targets" so I guess those won't work.

OK, no worries - the reason I asked is that myself and another CMDR have done sound decoding with Elite Dangerous previously. It's not far from Sol so I might just head out there myself.

No problem. I'm still in Alaunus drifting while I check on solutions to this GEForce buzzing. Apparently it's a bug that's been going on for a while now with ShadowPlay.....

Another image for the thread ..

For a minute there, I thought that was the one I posted because of the white Python. :)

I've run into these at several metallic crystal fields in different systems, as well as different crystals within the same field (purple and green for example, I forget their names.) These seem to be along the edges of the field and can be difficult to spot unless you fly right over one. I found night vision really handy . Some were so dark I couldn't even see the crystals to find where the edge was, just the gas cloud. I didn't try to scoop it up, but I did sit there for awhile and noticed it took awhile to deplete my shields. The anomaly was completely unaffected by Rail shots.

Not convinced it's Thargoid related as these don't seem contingent on systems with Ammonia worlds or Ammonia Gas Giants. According to the Codex, there are a lot of Anomalies that have specific criteria for their appearance. This one just seems to be one of the most common, much like some of the Lagrange Clouds with Metallic crystals.

:p LOL - yeah, I noticed your screenie too - the resemblance is uncanny. We even have the same ship kit and also both seem to be sporting a large round decal on the front.

Not being convinced yet either, but then, when the Void Hearts were discovered shortly afterwards, things more and more started to look like a Thargoid Construction Set to me. Could be one can build other stuff like Guardians too with later findings, but I would not be surprised if the Thargoids are an 'assembling and integrating' culture like the Borg were, nearly invincible, but with a weak spot somewhere that will save us all in the end :D

O7,
[noob]

anyone try going near it with guardian PP and distributor to see if maybe it's immune?

drop guardian/goid items neat it? meta alloys?

of course maybe its just a totally unrelated "space thingy" just to liven up exploration....

I'm beginning to think the same thing. Shooting it doesn't make it do anything, doesn't drop anything, doesn't react to the "HONK" at all, it just doesn't like it when you get too close. Would be nice if someone could record the sounds and run it through a spectrum analyzer. Might not be anything there at all, but my ears are telling me someone with the software should take a listen / look at it.

Sounds like something the thargoids use to direct the hive mind / individuals? I'm wondering if the planetary 'bases' might be the physical manifestation of it.

I believe Codex or Galnet stated that they're actually not a hive mind? Seem to remember that from somewhere.

Edit: I am wrong - post below mine clarifies that it actually states the opposite..
