Is there any?

Im going for a reset of diplomatic relations between Starman and some members of the forum community.

New years resolutions.

No more postings or links to news Items that appeared in the Daily Mail.

Improved grammar

* No more references to Hutton Orbital and their offer of a free Anaconda.

Strict adherence to forum rules policies T&Cs . In fact a device has been constructed that any variation from this an electric shock will be administered. This is still less pain ful that some of the commits I have received on forums but hey ho.

Happy New Year, Starman.

You've got to let a few things through the net, though. Whether it's me, you, or anyone else hammering furiously on a keyboard as though our anger will translate digitally into other people's homes, and linking a counter news item:

Variety Is The Spice Of Life.

Grammer is always good. Always respect other's comments even if you think they are a total idiot. Other than that ignore the threads with three participants posting 60 pages trying to get their point across that will never happen. Always be there for the new player who figured out how to join the Forum. Help those who rant about the game and the Frontier Devs only when we can show that they have no clue per understanding what they are currently trying to do in the game.

You know...business as usual.

Regards

Cant stick too close to the rules...wheres the fun in that? Ye got nasty comments then chances are ye were asking fer them....nastiness doesnt just happen fer the hell of it, theres provocation and response...takes at least two to tango.

New year, clean slate...im more ways than one which brings me to my new year resolution. Sell the house and liquidate all resources and assets and then simply vanish to somewhere nobody knows me and hopefully start again while I still have the strength to.

I did say Id give up the smokes yesterday, but that failed within the first ten minutes of waking up today with a motherload hangover ^

Well said, Verminstar.

Improved grammar is a good resolution.
In that case the title should read "Etiquette", but alas...

Speaking of, got my first official infraction the other day. How does that work? Are these "points" like notoriety, decaying over time, or will they hang over my head like Damocles' sword for the rest of time?

I'm always amazed how some people can spit out "nasty comments" like a Gatling gun with no apparent reprisal, while others say something slightly edgy, but in the spirit of good humor, and yet are thrown in cuffs. Then again, with all the time I end up wasting in the forums, it might do me good IRL to get banned, LOL.

They expire over time.

Never got an infraction, but every forum can be subjectively unfair in their rules. Here it seems to be all about personal attack. Mods seem to be quite tolerant when comes to spicier talk (unless you use words that are specifically considered nasty), but anything that comes close to 1v1 bickering or anything that resembles a personal attack, or even negative personal comment (though done in jest) is frowned upon. Sarcasm doesn't translate well into written word.
If you have questions about the specifics of your infraction, you can always ask Brett.

It expires, and I think you can see it somewhere or some such. To me it mostly seems random. I got an insta-ban when I told someone 'maybe you are a dummie' after he misunderstood something and went on an insulting spree, whereas far more offensive posts of mine are perfectly fine. :p

I remember my first infraction was because I called someone a moron - apparently even the obvious veracity was no defence. ;)

(I now just add these types to the ignore list to save me the temptation to call them out. Unfortunately the threads they start are still visible. :( )

I got banned for saying "your posts make me laugh". While others seem to get away with continuous insults.

I have also had completely innocuous posts removed for no apparent reason.

These things happen though.

I think it depends on the moderator who is dealing with it. Saying that I expect to get banned again for saying this as I think it maybe against the rules. Doesn't bother me anymore though as I am on the verge of leaving the forums.

Reddit seems a more pleasant place at the moment, which I never thought I would ever say.

That all depends upon whether you care about what people think of you, or what they think of what you have said. Does a ranking system matter to you?

People are getting infractions every second by social media and main stream media.

I'm afraid of that. I've read enough books to know where that can (will) go. No need to quote Orwell or Huxley, because they are overused.

But if for one minute, anyone thinks that they are immune; read some books from the past and see the similarities. Whether you see burying your head in the sand as a form of immunity, thinking that saying the right words will disinfect you from association of anyone that is seen as wrong, or hoping that the storm will subside before they come to you... None of that stops you thinking.

Standard warnings are just that...warnings. Infraction points wear down over time but there are certain punishments which stay on yer record as it were....my last ban from these forums lasted 3 months so its fair to say I know all about what happens when ye bend a rule till it breaks.

Lately all Im getting are warnings...maybe they figured out that some of us used to be quite proud of what they see as achievements...not me personally I just heard someone say that in a bar once upon a time, it disgusts me that some people would do that, have they no shame? They should be tarred and feathered and paraded through the streets and have children throw rotten fruit at them...lowest of the low ye would never ever catch me doing that cos I have the highest respect fer the law.../s

Unless yer intentionally breaking the rules, then I wouldnt stress out much over some snowflake not liking what ye say...their issue not yours cos they get triggered on the internet...like thats never happened before, right?

As fer favouritism with mods coming down harder on some than they do on others? I absolutely agree having seen numerous examples meself but who do ye complain to about a mod? Another mod...just say nothing and ignore it when it happens cos pointing it out and complaining is akin to pointing a gun at yer foot and pulling the trigger.

Never ends the way ye think it will...oh and dont ask how to mute mods cos that wont end well either, trust me on this if nothing else ^

I'm doing that myself lately. I've been just about ready to push "Post Quick Reply" on a zinger of a post, more often than not in self or somebody else's defense, only to click the "Ignore User" option instead. It definitely has made the forum more bearable.

Speaking of, is it possible to ignore non-moderating moderators?

Were you able to post bug reports while banned? I don't think I'll ever have to worry about it, but if somebody posts something idiotic the day my dog dies, or some other bad timing, well you never know. Despite how much time I spend here, I can live without the forums, but the bug report section is an entirely different thing. It actually surprises me that the same account used for casual chit-chat is tied to our ability to officially report bugs in the products Frontier sells...

This special sorta ban meant I could post a comment but only after it was checked by a mod would it appear on the thread...sometimes an hour or two later, in a few cases a day after I wrote the comment which made conversation all but impossible. But as far as I know, ye could still post bug reports...if ye can be bothered to I know ye like that sorta stuff but I gave up even trying a long time ago.

I suppose ye could block their alt accounts but herein lies a multi layered problem...fer one thing they arent allowed to use alt accounts so even if ye do figure out who their alt is, they will never admit it otherwise their masters would land on them...as a result ye will never be 100% certain if its a mod or some white knight pulling yer chain fer kicks.

Im assuming much here but I used to be a mod meself in other games and we used alt accounts all the time that we could never admit to...got away with it fer years too but its a thankless job and eventually got too boring cos too many rules...never done it since and never will again ^
