Future of Elite+Paid For Content

Much depends on how the Beyond season performed to expectations.

This holiday period has matched exactly the expectations I had anticipated.

Apart from the usual bugs it seems to be the best received update so far. There is even some balance between positive and negative threads, I believe that's the first time in Dangerous Discussion history. I've seen lots of praise about the new mining, exploration, the orrey map, night vision. Lighting changes and BGS improvements seems to trouble people the most.

I had posted in two other threads my thoughts about DLC's coming up. Most of them involved atmospheric landings of one kind of planet or another (gas giants, icy, lava worlds, high pressure worlds, water worlds) and possibly one DLC involving legs. My guess was based on FD being able to create content for each type of world, then put it up for sale as a DLC.

Not everyone wants legs. Fine, Don't buy that DLC. Not interested in icy worlds but can't wait to dive into a gas giant looking for space whales? Fine - get THAT DLC instead.

I'm guessing they'll be released one at a time with the last being Earth-like worlds which will obviously have to be populated with huge amounts of things that might want to eat you (or crawl up your nose and eat your brains).

Legs (if you want that DLC) could be incorporated into any of these DLC's (well, except gas giants unless we're talking about an EVA jet-pack suit). New SRV's could be created to do creature hunting or setting up mining facilities on the ground.

Free updates could include things like newer life forms here and there on various planets, as well as improvements in black holes, etc. I'd love to see Earth-like worlds with civilizations on them (not landable) that we might make first contact with. How they react to us in the future depends on how diplomatic we are in our first contact.

BTW, for landable Earth-likes with advanced civilizations on them, I'd expect some kind of auto-dock put in place to make sure we land where we're supposed to instead of out yonder by the old tool shed at Farmer Johnson's farm to scare his cattle.

I'm just taking shots in the dark here, just like everyone else, but that's the way I'd plan it.

If we look at our setups for playing Elite, almost all of us have invested hundreds if not thousands in gaming hardware, decent PC, VR headset etc, almost all just to play Elite.
Almost all, really? Speak for yourself thanks.

I play dozens of games a year, and this past week alone i've played 5 - gotta love the xmas break!

FDev have already said that the next era will be a paid-for addition.

There will be both paid for and free upgrades (for all core stuff). When and how - we will have to wait for announcement Zac hinted last time he talked about Q4 release and features delay.

Not sure when these updates will come out though. But I think we will get an update soon enough.

Announcements for the beginning of the year would already be an excellent initiative.

The holiday period was made easier to enjoy the other games, due to the freezes and disconnects here... :)

I dont know how they can expect anybody to give them any more money tbh. You could buy something and then a few months down the line you log in one day and its all changed, even things missing from your ship. Impossible to know what yo might end up with, i mean thats ok when its free... i guess... but lol paying for it.

Thankfully, it doesn't appear that FDev are too concerned with people that fear change

The exact form future upgrades will take and the payment model has not been determined yet AFAIK. I trust we'll hear about them sometime during Q1 this year.

Are you being serious here? Since the start the whole idea behind ED is that it's a work in progress and that changes and additions would be made for as long as the community supports the game (financially that is).

I have been with the game since late 2014, I have seen the trainwreck of the 2014 release, but I also have seen Frontier (slowly) improve the game during the past 3 years. And there have been mistakes and in a few aspects the game has changed for the worse IMO, but overall it's still a better game than it was. And even though I know Frontier will invariably fail to meet my expectations, nobody else is doing what they are doing (nobody can do) - that is, making an official Elite sequel - so of course they'll keep getting my money for as long as they're pushing the game towards the end goal.

I know, they got my money now so im at their mercy. Being unconcerned is pretty much the default state of games developers, especially once they got your cash.

Are you being serious here?

The FSS... this game is dead to me. If they dont do something about it as far as i am concerned i have been robbed. This wasnt an addition mind, they took something away that i have paid for.

So many concern threads these days about the funding model of Elite past and future.

Have their shares crashed or something or is it the year end amateur dramatics/economists meeting?

I didn't spend any time in 2018 worrying about anyones financial position but my own and its highly doubtful I will spend 2019 worrying about anyone elses.

Lol interesting you should say that - Look at the 6 month report:

https://markets.ft.com/data/equities/tearsheet/summary?s=FDEV:LSE

in the last 6 months FD shares have dropped from a high of 1,880 to a low of just 730 end of november - that's a loss of -61.2%

That's significant by any share terms - in a traders terms that's considered "catastrophic" and will have a long term effect on whether people will buy thier shares in the future.

Releasing poorly received product content at such a time really isn't going to have helped matters - stuff like what's happened in 3.3 gets noticed by people other than the gaming community and gaming press, and anyone at FDev who thinks different is a clueless fool who is jeopardising the companies future.

Thankfully, it doesn't appear that FDev are too concerned with people that fear change

Except for the Chinese, sorry StuartGT, hate to burst your little bubble there.

Seems a perfect time to mention that China is having a MAJOR crackdown on gaming overall as reported in the Financial Times in Sept (2018) - so FDev's move last year to sell shares to Chinese company Tencent in an opening gambit to crack the Chinese gaming market - previously considered profitable for WESTERN (non asian culture) gaming companies - is now looking more and more like it's not going to pay off at all.

Tencent's share price is now on the FT's "watch list" after it took a catastrophic -47.3% hit in the last 6 months 476 down to a low of 251.

Looks like FDev backed the wrong horse - or tencent did - or both.

It's not just me saying that either:

"The most disappointing stock trade in the world this year"

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ions-make-it-world-s-most-disappointing-stock

I hate being right.

How's that "10 year plan" looking now fanbois?
