Will you pre-order the next DLC? I will... and that's why:

In principle, I'm with those who say "Don't preorder anything!"

In practice ... it's not a huge amount of money in my scheme of things, I know I'm going to buy it regardless if only as a kind of voluntary subscription to a game I've already spent over a thousand hours playing, and if I'm buying a new paintjob anyway it's more efficient to preorder at the same time rather than making a separate purchase on the day of launch.

Well, it's different this time from last. We know that the next DLC has already been 'Green Lit' by Frontier and gone into full production. That means the Budget for it has already been assigned and has been effectively being paid for by Frontier and hope that the DLC sales will pay for (and generate profit for) the development. Hopefully, this will mean the community will not have the perception that they are paying for the DLC in advance. I think the only only point to pre-paying for any DLC would show to Frontier that the demand is still there for more Elite: Dangerous content and give them confidence to plan for another DLC but you are taking the risk on that content being any good.

Just a quite note, although the kick starter and the Season Pack : Horizons did give the impression that we were paying for the game in advance, it has been shown that the Kickstarter was there to gauge interest and help drum up support for the project. Didn't FDev say that the budget for E : D was over £8 Million with the Kickstarter Money on top?

Not sure what you are trying to say. If releasing a DLC is not cost effective they will obviously not do it. We already know that they are working on the next paid DLC since quite some time though.

Pity they wouldn't put that time into bug months if not years old........

'it has been shown' Really? Where? exactly...

It depends what's being offered.

If FD were just to say for example: "we have a new DLC being launched in June, you can pre-order now, but we're not telling you what's gonna be in the DLC".....then no!

If FD were to say..." next update is all Thargoid pewpew, pre-order now".....then no!

If FD were to say..." pre-order for our next DLC, we're gonna open up Atmospheric Landings with loads more content for you to find in-game".....then yes!

Your move Frontier!!!!!!!

Nope... I have the LEP, however if I did not have it, I would most likely wait until after it released.

Unless there is some kind of noteworthy benefit (like a significant discount, etc) there just isn't any rational reason, from a consumer perspective, to preorder digital goods (although I'm guilty of doing it a couple of times).

I likely will, because I enjoy the game. But can't say for sure until I see what the next DLC actually is.
Something like 'Space legs' would likely give me pause, and wait until release to see how it pans out.
While 'Atmos landings', and I'm all in. :)

FDev seems to struggle regarding game mechanics, that is why I am really sceptical with new features. Where does your enthusiasm come from?

I’d certainly want to know what it is first. I’d have no reason to buy The PvP Pack, for example.
But assuming this theoretical expansion contains content I would want, then I wouldn’t have a problem pre-ordering it. And if it happened to include a pre-order bonus than even better.

I've watched the game industry pretty closely over the past 20 years. Pre-ordering does not benefit the consumer in any way, it's meant to help the producer limit risk. The cutesy unique game items are meant to even out this equation, but who are we kidding?

As such, I very, very rarely pre-order games or fund kickstarters now. I did fund Elite's kickstarter because this game is right in my wheelhouse, having cut my teeth on space games playing Wing Commander and Privateer back in the early 90s. I also paid for Horizons when it was announced.

What I've observed since:
* content is hit or miss (imo--I use a fair amount of the new content but there's also a not-significant amount of lousy gameplay I don't touch).
* releases are not tested properly before launch.
* lately, milestones have been getting pushed back.

As such, I plan to wait until FD deploys something that I say to myself, "Gee, I must have feature X, it's AWESOME!!" In the meantime, I'll just keep enjoying what I enjoy with the game.

Nope, there is still a lot of unfinished place holding features in the game as is, so why would i pay for more. Finish whats in the game b4 opening up wallets or you'll end up with more stuff that gets over thought under delivered while other stuff gets pushed to the side (pp ect) or get unwanted by most, over-hyped stuff like out of the game (arena) modes. Pre-orders are just not good for us gamers and sets a bad precedent imo.

Will I pre-order the next Elite DLC?

Nope, not likely. I’ll wait until it’s out (whatever it ends up being) and there are some consumer reviews and opinions on it before deciding if I’ll buy it or not. This is nothing out of the ordinary for me as it’s how I approach all digital game purchases. I’ve only ever bought two games in early access or before release: Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program, and both were very playable and stable at the time I did buy them. It’s just not something I do normally.

I will probably buy it though of course. The only reason I’d skip it is if it’s either horribly broken and buggy, or if it’s a mostly combat only DLC.
