The Krait Phantom has now replaced the Asp Explorer as general run-around

I still gotta go for the Krait MKII - I can have a full mission-build with SLF fighter, still suitable for exploration and self-defense, and keep a 45LY jump range.

Mine should get ~56 LY when finished, which I’m perfectly happy with. I don’t like fitting tiny internals. Gets 4 more LY than my Asp with grandfathered engineering and a class-5 Guardian booster. Mainly, though, the Phantom is a much nicer place to sit.

Be interested to see this build too.

Had a play around with Coriolis and if I fit under-size thrusters, PP and PDist, a 5H GFSB and some guns I get 62Ly and 500m/s
Then, however, once I start fitting other internals (shield, collector, SRV bay etc) the jump-range starts to fall away.

This is my "daily driver" Krait Mk2, which I'm pretty happy with: https://s.orbis.zone/1kem
And this is the Phantom version of the same thing which I was considering building: https://s.orbis.zone/1kei

100 lower integrity, 150MJ less shield, 20t lower cargo capacity and 25% less DPS in return for an extra 7Ly jump-range.

Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be a bad ship. It is Cr25m cheaper and it could be significantly faster if I fitted 6A DD5s but I'd consider it a step down from the Mk2 even if it jumps further.
I mean, for schlepping around the bubble, who cares if it takes you 3 jumps or 4 jumps to reach your destination, right?

As a general runabout, it falls between the more nimble asp, and the better equipped python.
I normally prefer one of the 2 extremes.

Indeed. I also prefer a Phantom with 50+ LY range but 590m/s boost speed and 1000+ MJ shields... a 60+ LY build is easy to destroy even by a single attacker in open.

Wouldn't recommend anything less than this:

I don't mind getting killed every now and then ;-) That said, my 62LY Phantom is still better protected than my Asp used to be and I never got killed in that. I don't go to CGs in it etc so it's not a big deal for me. I'm careful around engineers bases and Shinrarta etc but ganking has died down in those places I think.

The Krait Phantom has replaced my Asp X as my general run around ship, but it has not been disposed of.

The Asp has been kept on and just changed role and refitted as my go-to ship for seismic charge mining. It has all the hardpoints and internals you need and perfect for squeezing in to tight spaces inbetween cracked rocks to pluck out all the juicy void opals.

The Phantom's cockpit view is not as good as Asp's, but it allows good jump range even when carrying some non-essential stuff, so it replaced my AspE as an exploration ship. The Asp became miner. Once I get back to the bubble, I think I'll make my mk.II the multipurpose mission runner. I also use a ICourier as a personal shuttle. Jump range is not great, but enough for the bubble.

Oh no it has not. The AspX is still the best ship by far. You can shove your phantoms up yer derriere.

It's rubbish.

Thinking of fitting a Phantom like this, once I get one, to go around signals and installations. Could downgrade shields and/or shield reinforcements for more cargo, should it be needed or forego the shield reinforcement completely to add a collector limpet controller.

The Phantom is a great ship. I'm using it for exploration right now and I really like it.

It's only drawback is that it has poor SuperCruise agility compared to the AspX. If you intend to use it for exploration, bear that in mind, since you'll likely be spending the majority of your time in SuperCruise...

It is a good run around ship, but honestly I find myself swapping back to the python a lot for that purpose. Nothing catches my boosting python already, and it's just got more room and it's so easy to fly.

{Puts hand up gingerly} "I didn't particularly like flying the AspX :( "

Which explains why there are so many small/medium ships to choose from, I liked the DBX more, which proves I'm a sad old man :) Nothing wrong with the AspX, nor with most ships, it all comes down to what works for us.

I will say both Krait flavours I really like, although the 'new' boost sound on the MkII....
