Spacelegs is a pipe dream.

Just because assets are not in game does not mean they have not been developed. I am sure there are plenty of things that FD has on internal builds that have not gone live yet. Why add the assets before the feature? Right now they are not needed.

Now, that being said.. I agree with the OP that Space Legs are a pipe dream. I don't believe the current lack of assets proves it, it's based more on FD's silence on the issue as well as the fact that I honestly just don't think they can pull it off.

They took our new Ice Planets away, which is a good clue as to the direction they are heading at the moment.

Wishful thinking makes me want to believe it is because a winter sports event is being planned, but then realistic thinking takes hold .....

Yet FD can do a lot of legs stuff if they put their mind to it in this game ... just look at what has been achieved already in Planet Coaster and Jurassic Park, even if it's just crowd scenes to start with.

Space legs is one of those things that I don't really ever want. First of all because it would make playing in VR a huge pain in the , but also because I feel that if we got space legs game play on the level that SRV game play currently is, then what would be the point? Driving an SRV is consistently the worst experience in the game, and the only reason I ever do it is because I have to do it in order to upgrade my ships. If some day in the future they manage to make the SRV gameplay interesting and fun, we can start talking about space legs. But until that day, I hope they don't spend any of their resources on it.

TBH I think they're on to something else, and since a while, and I supect that's what Sandro is working on since July or so. Neither space legs nor atmo landings may come to ED anymore, but will likely be implemented in the ED sucessor. Just as carriers and ice planets. Q4 is nice and all, but definitely not the big bang I expected them to end the season with. It was all too calm. Just hope VR will make it beyond ED too.

I don't believe in Elite 5. It wouldn't make sense to put so many resources into Beyond just to abandon it.

You’re not really planning on it, are you, FD? You’ve built no assets for it.
You're talking about "space legs" as a single unified development.

That's not how it was intended, by FD, going by the original plan on kickstarter. It was split into different things.

I was originally directed to it (cant remember where it is now though lol) by a stream where the excellent DJTruthsayer mentioned it, pointing out even though it says something like "not necessarily in this order", the next things on the roadmap were in ship/station 1st person, then atmospheric landing, then planet and other 1st person. In fact that roadmap is still on track, if we assume it is a roadmap, in the sense the next thing could conceivably be in ship 1st person as on the list.

The purpose of in ship and even in station 1st person could be the same as X4 - not poking about in the dark bowels of the ship, manually picking up cargo and tightening loose nuts - but getting a sense of scale in the cockpit, walking down a ramp/lift to the *huge* landing pad, and .... not much else initially. That wouldnt require the assets that you are talking about in your post OP.

I have 2 opinions on it, they alternate hourly. 1 says atmospheric landings are next, the other says in ship basic 1st person. I cant decide which is more likely ... based on the what I've written above, I actually think .... maybe ... it's 1st person in ship. But then I really want atmospherics.

If it's space cats I riot, is all I'm saying.

Space cats would be awesome.

Agreed, but I think it's actually possible we may see in effect "Elite Dangerous Enhanced Edition". The only reason for moving past "Dangerous" would be technical debt built up in code started in 2012-2014, and potentially now causing problems with what the developers would like to implement but can't without other compromises. So a substantial development project effectively rewriting EDangerous more efficiently, with the knowledge they now have of how to best code the game as it is today, and with the future content already specified to some degree, removing the technical debt and much more ready for atmospheres 1st person etc .... it's possible.

But unlikely, I suspect. But possible.

If I was Frontier I'd be tempted to make Space Legs part of a base-building/ship-customising expansion. Less of a FPS thing and more of a Subnautica/NMS thing. Maybe the manageable way to do it is to have it as an entirely separate game that shares the same BGS universe. And over time you could merge the two systems.

Atmospheric worlds is a huge task, but it's mostly just work rather than colossal design challenges.

As far as I'm aware, Frontier haven't given any details on what's coming, so using your method seems a little hit and miss.

I still think it is possible space legs come this year. But it won't be "space legs", it will be scenarios, confined spaces for that purpose, where you can talk to npc's and maybe walk a little. You won't be able to walk on stations, or on planets, perhaps not on ships either, as they are not suited for that and there is nothing to gain from that. Then they'll maybe make some sort of a main quest, where this would be utilized. Maybe add some kind of pilot quarters, and squadron headquarters. Some of these scenarios, especially involving aliens, could look pretty nice in VR. Mind you this is all speculation. But it could be realistic to achieve. I would of course instead rebalance everything, aim for a more indepth, better functioning multiplayer game experience, but this sort of stuff will generate better sales.

Looking at NMS, you'd walk and walk and walk and... even in stations , for what they are worth, it gets tedious. Best thing this game got so far was the ability to drive. Last time I walked, was the time I walked away from the game 6 months ago.

Imo, space legs will be a novelty wearing of faster than a paint job in supercruise. I really hope they are working on atmospheres first, and that they park legs for when there is nothing else left to build.

*OP in 2014*

"Landing on planets is just a pipe dream, isn't it? Planets are just perfect balls with 2D textures on them. I tried flying there, there is nothing done at all. If you'd had it, it would be there. You are just stringing us along!"

FD announced planetary landings, what, three months before release? Up until that point the same arguments were used.

"But they haven't said anything!"
"Actually, they did say they would work on it..."
"Yeah, but I mean recently! And there is nothing in the game that shows they are working on it!"

Then a few months later it was added to the game. The simple truth is nobody knows what is happening. They say they were planning on it, then they said they started work on it. That is all we know.

That's way too reasonable, let me try to get some balance into this whole legs business:

You’re not really planning on it, are you, FD? You’ve built no assets for it. There is no consistency in ship builds to suggest they were built with that in mind. Behind the doorways, there’s just an empty hull with the exception of things we can all see, like the SRV and SLF bays, and hardpoints. On the Hauler you even have the landing gear clipping through the cockpit, near the doorway. The stairways into the ships end up in different places. In the cobra 4, it leads directly to the srv bay. In others, it leads part way up or down or whatever, because there’s clearly no defined plan. I thought this was part of the Kickstarter.... pray tell, will we ever even walk around inside our ships? It doesn’t look like it to me:

I hope we get space legs, but if not someone else will release a new multiplayer space game which includes it.

I really enjoy the first person walking in NMS and SC, but the space ship flying doesn't compare imo
