Forum GOTY Thread

To make it simpler. Console platform only game a winner? No. PC platform only game a winner? No.
If it's not across all three major platforms, it doesn't mean much.
Remember Wii only getting goty?
It might be a fabulous game. I can't play it so it's a down vote as it doesn't mean much when 2 of 3 major platforms only can play.

This isn't reddit so no downvotes unfortunately...and you still haven't contributed any GOTY suggestions despite being butthurt that those of us who play many games across several platforms voted for a console game as our personal choice...note the word 'personal' in all that.

But then again, not all of us in this thread voted for that particular game since a few of us who contributed only play PC games...but you still chose to add your PC master race comments none the less ;)

'game of the year' still sounds as creepy and senseless to me as 'employee of the month': doesn't make much sense unless there's some agenda, and of course it's completely moot unless you are part of the industry and have reviewed all games launched in 2018, which obviously nobody has. that marketeers make up such contests is understandable, that consumers do it themselves just shows how deep into the reptilian brain this marketing crap goes ...

it's not a race, and each game has its own merits. good games will still be good whenever you discover/play them, and regardless of any other titles.

that said, happy new year to all! :D

I have to say that Kingdom Come Deliverance is a quite impressive game. Battletech is probably my GOTY. (both kickstarters by the way, shows that sometimes we get what we pay for)
Hollow Knight comes in a good position too. RimWorld (final version released in 2018) is my other GOTY.

As for worst game of 2018 i would like to nominate Fallout 76.

GOTY = Which game did you enjoy most last year.

At least that's the context here. No agenda needed. I don't care if you suggest a iOS or SNES game.

Woss HolloKnight - but the other games are all excellent. I can only recommend.

Ok. What is your game of the year? Please name just one! (Honorable mentions are ok)

Mine is Nier Automata. I started it last year (2017) but finished it this year, and it’s easily one of the best games I played during the past 20 years. Yoko Taro is a brillant genius. This story really only works as a computer game. The ending (E) just left me speechless. Perfect pacing, absolutely amazing dynamic music score, superfluid combat. He also managed to bring across the core ideas of existentialism without being pretentious or banal. Masterpiece!

Only bought it in 2018. Not sure how far I got in it but several endings in (I tend to get bored quickly, no judgement on what I get bored with as I do it with everything) and agree that it was very well done. Looked gorgeous, soundtrack fantastic, combat fun even on mouse & kb. I have a bit of a game-crush on 2B.

Dead Cells was another goodie. Again, not got to the end but very much enjoyed the meta. Good replay value and in a way reminds me of my 8-bit platforming in the 80s aka dying a lot!

Battletech was also really well done. I'm terrible at turn-based strategy games (I'm only worse at RTS) but still managed to enjoy it, although I played the board game/pen & paper RPG in the 90s. Via this I've had a good time with the newer Shadowrun games as have started to get where TBS games are coming from!

Really not sure what my GOTY will be, though.

EDIT: I don't own a console so haven't been doing the cowboy thing. I have to admit that I find The Witcher games a bit annoying but I'll probably get pilloried for that. Saying that, Cyberpunk 2077 does look quite interesting.

I myself am absolutely not a fan of playing a game multiple times and hesitated for long to play beyond ending A. Thank god I finally did! I don't want to spoil anything, but playing beyond ending B is of the utmost importance. It's impossible to stress this enough. Trust me on that. If you make it beyond C, just make sure to get to see ending E.

I dont think I can come up with just one title.....

Assassins Creed Odissey or Subnautica, its going to be a close call between the two. Very surprising for me as well as I saw myself more as the "RPG gamer". I have to thank a small blind, subterranean mammal for its advice otherwise I would ve burned right pastz em ^^

I am really surprised to see so many mentions of Assassins Creed Odyssey here. I only played for an hour or two but was already annoyed that quests beyond my current level are almost impossible (without cheese). Does it become better once you leave the starting island?

Once you leave the starting island your level is high enough that generally it's no issue as you plod your way along. If you see the big scary red numbers over oponents or missions in the list, the game is only suggesting you're perhaps jumping the gun...a bit like the Witcher 3 in that sense.

I didn't find it that restrictive except the very beginning when I wanted to just roam around Kefalonia...and got killed by level 6 sharks, level 5 wolves...usual stuff to keep you on track.

Kefalonia is in all essence a prologue to the rest of the game...since the main titles roll up once you get on your ship to leave it.

In terms of hours spent in game, in joint first place:

. Kingdoms and Castles - deceptively simple and small, great fun, and being improved upon with good updates.
. Ghost Recon Wildlands - a huge open world sandpit, with a decent merging of first and third person view.
. Far Cry 5 - a moderately small open world, but once you eschew helicopters it becomes vibrantly alive.

I've uninstalled the EfT after the recent scandal when they have taken down Eroktic's channel by copyright strikes and DMCA claims after they "disagreed" with his video and they will not see my money ever again.
