Newcomer / Intro First time poster with questions

Hello, I just started to play more of this game. And I say it that way because I bought it time ago but after a couple of hours, I left it. Now, with an oculus, I've been traveling around and for the time being, I've become addicted to it. I have never felt this sense of awe since I played Skyrim, if not since I powered up my NES for the first time.

I've been reading a lot about the deep mechanics this game has. The flying controls don't seem that hard nor following and finishing missions but the factions, powers and superpowers it's kind of overwhelming. So I've got a few questions, I hope some of you can help me with them.

1. Can I change outcomes of minor faction action states alone? Like if a faction is in an outbreak state and I start doing a lot of missions for delivering medicins and stuff can I put an end to it sooner than "programmed"?

2. I get that in open play I can and will find other human players, but being the galaxy so vast I wonder how can I identify which is an NPC ship and which is one commanded by a human player?

3. I think I have a very basic understanding of the power play and the cycle of fortification-preparation-expansion, so I wonder if It is possible to "expand" by ordering the command points to build a new outpost or space station in an uninhabited system?

4. Related to the other one, is there a game mode or missions where I can directly help to build new stations and settlements and expand the bubble? So far I've loved to play space truck simulator: Milky Way and I would love to see a "finished product" after working a lot with a faction. Like, after hauling 600,000 tons of titanium I'll see a new space station taking form after weeks or maybe a month, or once a new surface settlement is finished I coudl find missions to haul new colonists to it from the inner and most populated systems.

5. Unwisely I took an "Elite" mission and got hastily interdicted and destroyed, but discovered that I could get my ship back and be alive, so, is there a way to really "die" within the game? Flying to a star or something?

And that's all for now. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.

1. It depends on the size of the system's population. Small systems (like 10k inhabitants or so) definitely. It takes work but it is doable to shape the system to your liking. Bigger systems need more coordinated effort to influence or flip.

2. Human commanders have hollow icons on your radar as opposed to full icons of the NPCs. They also have the designation "CMDR" in front of their name.

3. You can't simply "make building a station happen" like that. Plus you are mixing the BGS expansion (background simulation a.k.a minor factions expanding to new systems) and Powerplay expansion (a.k.a enlarging the sphere of influence of a Power). Powerplay is kind of a standalone "politics simulator" within Elite. You can participate or ignore it at your leisure.
If you want to do anything PP-related a bit more seriously, I would definitely recommend joining an official reddit of the Power of your choice and coordinating with other commanders. You can actually do proper damage to a Power if you inadvertedly work against the plan the community is having.

4. The way of "building a new station" is to help a minor faction in an inhabited space expand to an uninhabited system. Sadly you can't exactly choose a system the faction will expand to. That is up to the faction (that means it's BGS not player-driven)

5. No. You are effectively immortal. When your ship is destroyed, you are transported back to the last station you've docked with. You are given a choice to rebuy your ship as it was. If you don't have enough money for a rebuy, you will be given a free Sidewinder and effectively start over. (If you have multiple ships, you will keep them, of course.)
That means that when you're flying bigger, more expensive ships and/or have done some engineering to personalize your ship and its modules, it definitely pays off to always have money ready for an occasional rebuy.

Errm, no - factions won't expand to uninhabited systems, only into inhabited ones (only FDev can add new stations when they want). Factions can choose the destinations, or at least predict them (which allows choice), but that is quite complex.

There are occasionally Community Goals to build new stations - keep an eye out for new goals on the Mission Board (look at the top left) on Thursdays to see the new ones (they are also announced on Galnet).

Edit: And you can also repair stations if you want - look at the 2nd galnet post to find where the stations needing repair are (you can also show them in the galmap). These pay badly, and are a lot of work to complete - more fun in a group.

Okay, my bad if that's the case, but are you sure this is true for outposts and planetary bases as well?
When a faction expands to an uninhabited space (the population goes above 0) I'm pretty sure some things are built there. The bubble is almost twice the size it was on launch. Are you telling me that Fdev populated all those systems by hand?

For point 2 - you may wish to avoid Open Mode.
Some of those people you meet will not be friendly.
Try a large private group like Mobius where PvP is banned but you can still meet people.

Yes. That is why factions were in a expansion state loop indefinitely if there wasnt a 'valid target' within range.

Man, if that's the case then it is going to take them one thousand generations to fill half of what an elite explorer surveys in a month...

I hope they "automatize" the proces or involve more player initiative, as I said, I would love to be sent to missions to build those things.

I guess that's a risk that's always present in all MMO. I'll keep on open mode until I really got a very bad experience out of it.

Another question related to that, I've heard that "piracy" is broken because you can only practice it on real players, thus, it can be avoided easily playing solo or in private groups. Is that has been fixed and how could be fixed?

Or you might want to play in open for the thrill of it.

I cut my teeth in Open (when I had nothing to lose) then for a couple of months went in Solo while I was exploring and returning to sell my exploration date (which you will LOSE yes LOSE if you get destroyed before you turn it in so be warned), and now only go into solo if I absolutly have to get something done and can't sod about.

Anyway, that's my 2 penneth, take it as you will as long as you're having fun being a spaceman (or woman) then all is cool.

Good stuff! Even then, bad experiences are very rare. Good luck out there!

As a former pirate, I can say that this is not the case. Pirating NPCs is far more lucrative than pirating players as the NPCs are predictable and follow set routines, which makes stalking and robbing them easier.

However, NPCs don't respond to threats or demands, whereas players do. I know of several pirates who play the role brilliantly - they keep their demands reasonable and will absolutely follow-up with their threats if not complied with. Players who choose Open know that pirates are a risk, but enjoy running the gauntlet. The foolish try to run, the wise know that losing a little bit of cargo is better than losing the lot, and some even blow themselves up rather than surrender their stuff (what the pirate loses in cargo, they will gain in lols at this :D)

Players who do not want others threatening or demanding stuff from them should indeed play in Solo or a Private Group where such behaviour is not permitted in their house rules - this is fine and does not need fixing.

How is the procedure to pirate NPC ships? Do you make demands and if you keep them reasonable they obey? Or do I have to destroy them and recover whatever is on their remains? Asking for a friend...

I'll let Down to Earth Astronomy talk you - sorry, your friend - through it ;)

There is nothing to fix here - people, who have chosen private PvE group or solo do not want to have to deal with pvp players - this is their choice and it should be respected.
