Long Dark: Wintermute Redux

I'm not a big fan of the story mode, but while I'm waiting for mods (well, mostly the Relentless Night) to update, I decided to give Wintermute a try again. Well, it does appear to play better and doesn't feel as forced, so that's good: to me, it looks like they've done well this time around.
Also, any word on the bear spear? They said it's story mode only so far, but I haven't heard much about it.

You can spawn the spear into Survival mode, if you enable MODs. I have one but haven't tried it in anger yet, haven't had the time.

I love The Long Dark's survival mode.

My most recent game started in June, in Interloper difficulty, and is still going. I've survived 639 days so far, have trekked through 85% of the world, and am living comfortably in Milton Park.

This particular game is by far my best effort yet. My daily usage of "non-renewable" resources is very low - the new rabbit-skin hat has certainly helped on this front.

My current save on interloper is up to 1,000 days at last.

Benefits of having little else to play, and too much time.off watch :D

I was 30 odd days into the 'Relentless Night' Mod but the last update seems to have done strange things to my save so abandoned that one. I may start again but in the meantime, I started a custom Interloper with x2 time scale and tweaked some other settings to make it harder. Masochism is alive and well.:D

639 and 1,000 days of Interloper? Colour me thoroughly impressed. There's precious little room for error on that difficulty, after all. Plus putting up with the same thing for so long.
That's why I prefer Relentless Night, since it adds a long-term goal to work towards, and then makes survival much more difficult.
Speaking of which...

@ bladerunner900: Relentless Night updated just today. Not the new version yet, just updated to work with the game's current version. So we need to wait a bit before we can haul carcasses around. (Because why would I want to harvest a deer carcass outside when it feels like -100 C, and I shot it maybe ten meters away from the door.)

Thing is, I can sort of 'cheat' due to.the amount of time I have at work.

My character generally stands outside the camp lodge during the day while I read my book and use the game as an rather pretty.slow.changing screensaver :D

What is.relentless.night all about?

Yes, I had an email notification for that on Discord. I'll probably wait for the update though.

It's a mod that adds a new Sandbox mode where basically, the Earths rotation is slowing down. The days are getting longer so temperatures and wildlife flourishes for a while. To counter this the nights also get longer and colder and eventually, the Earths rotation gets locked in synchronous rotation with the Sun, much like the Moon is locked with the Earth. When that happens it's permanent night. Takes 200 days by default but like Survival mode, it is fully customisable.

It also includes some nice tweaks to balance this out, such as in-door temperatures not magically fixed, but set at half of the outdoor temperature, by default. (Also configurable.) That little change alone has quite far-reaching implications for where you will pick your bases.

Plus by the time days and nights slow down to multiple calendar days, then weeks, there's always preparing for the next long night, and even if you go exploring elsewhere, you do still have to think about where you'll go for shelter once the long day runs out. So it's more like "I have five calendar days to explore and get back to my base, or prepare a new one for the night". You still can go and get some food and firewood (and it's not like it gets completely dark and super freezing immediately), but it will quickly get more difficult. Temperatures drop quickly, temperatures affect wildlife rates, so...
Time management is also a more interesting aspect. Save time-consuming tasks for the night and go hunting during the day, do the time-consuming stuff during the long night while you're holed up inside. Cabin fever is disabled, mind.

Well, thats me up to date with the new Wintermute storyline.

Have to say, the improvements and additions are fantastic. Even the tutorial doesnt feel forced now :)
