Frontier, what ever happened to...

What are you blabbering?

There is no ironman mode implemented.

Say what? Im aware of that. If you follow the post trail. You can see that the way ironman mode works right now is its on you to delete the save and all that other stuff.

This aint the wild wild west son. You dont need the itchy trigger fingers. :)

Ironman seems pretty neat. I'd hope they change the times it takes to get things done in that mode. Like engineers and stuff. Fast track it a little bit, and set a starting protection or random seeding so we all dont spawn in one place.

My first reaction to fast tracking folks in Ironman, I quite liked it.
However, upon reflection, people could use it as a way to gain an advantage in the normal game.

As the DDA idea states that death in Ironman would give you the choice of starting new or being moved out of the Ironman Group to the normal game (with your stuff)
So people could "Power Level" in Ironman and then on purpose, get killed to be then moved to the normal Open game with all their stuff.

So I'd say that if folks agreed to have fast tracking (which I do still like), then the option to be moved with your stuff to the normal game upon death needs to be removed from the plan.

Be nice to know if Ironman is still on a board in the office somewhere, what I'd give to have a nose around the Frontier offices :)

A valid concern. But frankly I wouldn't have a problem with that, if it would mean that players would be more incentivized to try out Ironman. Some might end up liking it and playing it in the long run.

Not allowing players to be able to carry their save / assets into regular Open upon death would certainly represent a deterrent. For example I used to play a lot of Path of Exile Hardcore back in the day, even if I sucked at it. Without the ability to find my character back in Standard I would have probably never tried Hardcore in that game.

Besides, Open is already bonkers borked when it comes to player asset balance. We have moguls who have been playing for 4 years, we have billionaires who have been using every money making scheme in the book unchecked, we have grandfathered god-rolled items which can never be achieved again, and for a good while we had exploited RNGineered god-rolled mods running around popping people left and right. Also, if we are to learn by example: PoE is dumping each temp league every couple of months back in Standard, and Standard is still going strong and being played in, last I checked.

I wouldn't worry about a new player learning the ropes and boosting his assets in the hardest mode available, only so that he could face the big bois in current Open.

Existing players wouldn't be able to fast track, or at least it wouldn't do them any good, in order to join Ironman they would need to reset their account anyway (remember, we're not asking for extra commander slots, just Ironman mode).

Very true.

But I figured I'd mention the balance issue as it used to get brought up in the normal mode switching chats quite often, so I figured some of the concerns might still apply.
I for one am not bothered, because as you have pointed out; there is no real balance in Open anyway. So even if Ironman folks did get a fast track, they are not really any better off in the long run.

I know if it ever did get released, there could be some folks picking up extra copies of the game to try it out.
Heck £5 (on sale prices) for the base game, even I'd give it go - cheaper than a night in the pub ;)

There have been times when I have wondered how this game might have been different, and some design decisions might have been different, if this were the only way to play the game.

Far less grind, flying big ships would be a lot more dangerous, etc.

It's reasonable to assume that the entire face of the game, and how it's generally played, would be quite different.

Which is not to say better or worse - just different.

Likely considerably smaller.

I don't know, Indigo - if Open only, I would agree, but if all 3 modes were kept intact, I don't think it would have had as negative of an impact on the overall population size as it might seem.

I would say that the Cobra would probably be the most flown ship in the game, and by a very large margin, with the bigger ships being more rare, and reserved for those who are really good/confident, or those who just aren't afraid of risk in a game.

Given the, now, comparatively archaic methods used to create the save-game in the original, and the fact that one could have as many save-games as one wished (on different cassette tapes), I'd be surprised if a significant portion of players played the original in Iron-Man mode....

If you think it's a great idea but only for your "alt" then it ain't that great an idea. Not everyone has alt accounts

I think it's great and I only have one account.*

*Okay not true, but I haven't touched the game on Xbox for months because PC mustard race.

I've seen this mentioned a fair few times, yet nothing seems to have come from it.
Was there lack of interest in it, or was there a technical reason it hasn't happened?

Because folks used to constantly harp on how great it would be when it gets here.
And it would add another dynamic for those who have done all they want to do in the normal game.

Could still happen, but there's a heck of a lot of things that have taken priority over this, imagine every bug, now add this and watch how frontier's work burden increases with support alone because people actually perma die.

You seem to not understand the concept of an Ironman MODE. It means all commanders in that mode are playing Ironman and abide by the mode rules.

For example, if I manage, in Ironman, to assassinate that notorious PvPer who's been killing people left and right, I know for a fact that all his assets, all his Corvettes and his Cutters and his mods and his billions are instantly deleted from the mode. I know that he won't be able to come back at me right away, unless he does it in his starter Sidewinder. But I also know that his vengeance will be brutal when he builds himself back again.
∆this +1.
Well explained. I also like the person above saying a true warrior should die by the sword. Bit like Valhalla. Difficult to explain to some who play this game as a space truck simulator. Honour, adrenalin, reputation can not be described with numbers or credits or meaningless ranks. Ultimate death in ironman mode. Only a true warrior would understand this. Why not call it "warrior mode"? Id be all up for it

Excellent - it wasn't Lost Winds after all ;)Still - 2013 dude, 2013. In the wise words of Disney : If FDev ever decide to implement it I'm sure they'll let us know as it is announced :)
Er..you do know he's still dead so far, right?oops.

Frontier, what ever happened to...

...Rock and Roll? What happened to Hip Hop? What happened to the cinema? Films used to be… Great. Now they’re easy to make, easy to sell, easy to get bored of - everything’s 4 stars or more - Everything’s the best film of the year - Fast food films - Fast food music - Fast food politics - Fast food ideologies - What’s the worth of working to live at the cost of your soul? So much so that you don’t want to live at all?
