Wrong choice, or I'm not cut out for distance

So having made a Billion with Opals I decided to do Engineering, got as far as Qwent and a Palin notification.

So needed a 5000ly trip, I know kit out the Beluga "Res Ipsa Loquitur" for a long haul trip.!

All sorted passenger needs a 12,375ly trip to some godforsaken point in the middle of nowhere, that'll do ,

My god 351 jumps :O:O, never mind it's an experience.

So I'm on my way, jump, jump, jump, fss scan, jump, et al. Dear god this is tedious.

12,375ly my rsea this passenger is getting ejected at 5001ly beyond my start point and I'm either crashing into the firs star i see or I'll trudge back to civilization as quick as possible.

I understand that I could have done this another way but i made the choice and my eyeballs are paying the price.

Despite what appears to be a salt fest i love this game , but the black isn't for me, bubble is just fine, hauling biowaste seems much easier :D.

About 200 jumps left, wish me luck

- Build Asp Explorer / DBX / Phantom with 60+ LY range
- Neutron boost 5001 LY (it's 22 jumps give or take) (use spansh to be extra quick)
- Self destruct at 5001 LY distance
- Profit!

That's another way to do it. Alternatively without the self-destruct. And one that takes an hour (without the engineering of the ship though)

Well somebodies got to haul that crap away, otherwise it's gonna be a sorry mess eventually.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly did my share of biowaste haulage when I built up my stash for my first explorer. It's funny, secret plans, medical supplies, data, weapons, that's all lucrative stuff but when that lot's done there's always crap left, it never seems end does it. That 5kly is worth doing just to see if you are cut out to be an explorer, and we all aren't cut out for that, but someone has to keep the galaxy going, be proud of that you do is what I say, there's no "just" about hauling crap, that stuff has gotta be moved!

In the current iteration of exploration, I advice to have a good movie playing on the second screen and just ignore the Full System Snorefest. Jump, jump, jump while enjoying some flick.

That's long range exploration these days.

Uh... that was how exploration was in earlier times. Jump, honk, jump, honk, rinse and repeat. Best to watch a movie while doing that.

Nah, you could also magically discern from the just honked system map view if a planet yielded 600k+ or not. Or by listening to the mouse-over-sound. Those were the times :D

In earlier times I had the option to know the system I was traveling through. Stopping my journey to check out interesting systems. If I want to do that now, I am forced to go into the Full System Snorefest every single system. And this mini game gets stale after a dozen uses.

So jump, jump, jump, scan an ELW 500,000ls away, jump, jump it is.

I did same wrong assumption, I used DBX. But specialized anaconda makes 80Ly jumps.

Sure, but you need G5 Engineering and a Guardian FSD Booster for that. Considering the topic is about engineer unlocks, I think it's safe to assume not all of that is available for OP.

Define "interesting". In the old system you opened the map to see if something was blue enough to be a water world or earthlike. (Or sometimes a metalic one trying to fool you. ) If you saw something like that, you flew there and scanned it. Some ELWs in the Monkey Head Nebula have my tag on them due to that.

But the new system also has a method to find those. You just have to see, where the peaks are on the radio dial. Only if there's a peak at the ELW area, it's worth looking for the ELW. You don't need to scan the complete system to figure out if there's anything like that around.

Of course, improvements could be done. One suggestion was that the radio dial would be displayed in the cockpit for a little while when you "honked". That would make perfect sense to me, it would save a few seconds, would not force you to go to the FSS screen just to look at the dial but still would not break the new FSS system.

That's just one thing. We could make a list of possible and reasonable improvements to the FSS. (Not in this thread, though. ) But the information itself is still here, you just have to know where to look.

I decided to finally do this as well.. I will probably knock it out over the weekend but really not looking forward to it.

I have a 68LY Diamondback.. just going to head out to Jellyfish and back. Going to do it as quickly as possible and just get it over with.

This should rival Selene Jean for the most boring unlock ever.. it really sucks that I have to do things like this for Engineering unlocks that are totally unrelated. Mining to unlock Shield Boosters, Exploration to get Dirty Drives.. whatever.

I play in VR and that FSS thing is just a complete pain, not bothering with that. Jump, scoop, honk, jump.. over and over again. How "exciting."

Probably not but 50+ in an Asp and closer to 60 in an Anaconda is achievable with just a grade 5 FSD.

Indeed, I completely missed that and forgot at that point DBX was best choice for me. [I just could not live thinking about the mistake I did, now I feel peaceful. Thank you!)]

Don't care for ELWs. I did the cherry picking routine for a couple of thousand LYs, made 400 mil but gave me no joy. Here's some examples what I find interesting.

No peaks on the radio dial is going to tell me about them.

It'll get moved to suggestions where it whithers and dies. In Dangerous Discussions only bickering is allowed.

I'd already travelled more than 5,000ly so that unlock wasn't an issue for me. I think my equivalent would probably be the 50t of Bromelite. So I can empathise with the OP, and now I know enough about how mining works to be able to find a particular commodity. And that mining isn't for me ;)

Yesss, Elite Boring is killed by tedious mechanics like jumping around, when it could be done by a NPC crewmember or an autopilot.
