Ships What should I choose as a miner? Federal Corvette or Type 10 Defender?

When I made rank, I bought a Federal Corvette and used it to do all the mining I needed to gain engineer access, but sold it to focus on other ships (after I made enough money to not lose money selling it back). The Corvette handles amazingly for its size, and is easy to navigate through asteroid belts. I tried out the Type 10 in beta, and didn’t engineer it, but it’s a great looking ship and has a better jump range than the Corvette, and the Type 10 looks like a miner.

Which ship would you suggest for mining? Earning credits isn’t my only concern, unless one has a landslide edge over the other. I’m leaning toward the Type 10, cause I’ve always liked the ship, but didn’t have a use for it. I’ve heard certain aspects of the new mining system requires you to get up close and personal with asteroids, and I’m not sure how easy it is to control the Type 10 or if control is as big and lumbering as it looks.

If you are only comparing the two, Type 10 would have more cargo space....so I would go for Type 10

My primary mining ship is a T10 but it lacks the agility required to easily place seismic charges, also some of the hard points are way off the centre line so drill missiles and abrasion blasters can be hard to aim.

The other big issue is mining the surface deposits released by cracking the roid as you need to fly "inside" the cracked asteroid to get a clear shot not easy in any big ship, I agree the T10 looks great as a miner but it's not ideally suited to DC mining so mines back to being a large scale conventional mining ship.

For DC mining try a Python, Krait mk2 or a Challenger, I reckon the Challenger has great low speed agility and with a DC mining fit still has a decent weapons loadout the 64T capacity may sound limiting but with void opals that's around 100 mil.

Python high capacity

Krait mk2 long range exo bubble

Compare and decide yourself. Both ships are relative close in Performance, with the Vette a bit better.
The Corvette is faster, can have more cargo and more shields but the T10 has more jumprange and a better view.
I would chose the Corvette because it is a tad better suited for armed engagements, but if you plan on PvE it doesn't really matter.

Mine gets charges in place just fine.

Not using drill missiles, but the abrasion lasers have obvious hardpoints asking for them on either side of the cockpit.

I've had no issues thus far. Haven't cracked a rock with a spot I couldn't easily get to. They split pretty wide.

Honestly use neither of them. You want a medium sized ship for mining because a lot of the 1.65 million a ton void opal sell locations only have medium and small pads. Python IMO is the best mining ship. Mine has 170 ton cargo and will take me a couple hours to fill if only deep core mining.

Ever time i have handed in my spoils there is always a large pad in the top prices list, and working on fitting my t10 at the moment to try it out.

T10 is semi eningeered just need to redo my guns, I wanted to see which would work better, turrets, or gimbled or a mix of both. Jurys still out as i have not had much time to play yet but will get on it after i come back from a ride.

Main problem with using a big ship is that you will get hit by bigger pirates, i just got jumped by a Ferdy and 4 vipers, and while most times i would give it a go just for kicks, Didnt want to risk me cargo.

I've been using my vett and it works out just fine. If I have the time and feel like binging Netflix a full load will let me in the neighborhood of 600 million plus.

I run with 7c biweave shields, and two huge efficient lasers. If you're in solo you don't ever have to worry about pirates. Ever. Running open and meeting a pvp commander. . . . .you're screwed lol.

I'm actually retrofitting my python to give it a try at mining, a smaller hold with aprox 200 VO is a lesser payout, but I can fill it faster. . . . So it essentially boils down to the which is better, a one hit kill or high dps. So faster full and drops, or a longer run with a bigger sell at the end. It will really just come down to your preference.

However, just remember that if you leave the vett out in the black overnight and come back, you'll get thousands of extra credits from blowing up pirates that your python will have to run from because it doesn't have any offense . . . .
