Following some guides I thought I'd try out the new core mining. Looking to buy a 1C Detailed Surface Scanner (Assuming I need this and not the 1I the Cobra MKIV comes with as I couldn't launch probes into a ring with it (couldn't launch probes at all in analysis mode, in or out of supercruise..)). Some sites on the web suggest I can get one at Jameson Memorial, but it isn't available?

Don't worry about the letters.
If it says it's a Detailed Surface Scanner the that's what it is.
Also you only need the DSS to look for the rings you want to mine in, after you've found those you can come back and mine without it (or in a different ship). You will need a prospecting scanner though (might be the wrong name, these are in the "Utilities" section of the outfitting menu)

I'm not sure, but I think that if you return to a ring in a ship without DSS you'll not see hotspots you've discovered when you've had one.
Confirmed. If you scan a ring with the DSS, then remove it from your ship, your hotspots will disappear from view and won't show in your nav panel either, have to keep the DSS installed.
