Frontier works very hard

I often read on the forums that Frontier works very hard on ED. Adam Woods recently declared that Frontier works very hard to release the beta version 2.0. On the forums, there are also doubts on the possibility of releasing the retail version at the end of the year.

This game is exceptional, the backers are certainly very demanding, and apparently Frontier is under a big pressure. Personally I prefer that Frontier works less hard, that the patience is the main quality of backers, and that the retail version include all the planned contents and in full working order. Yes, Frontier should work less hard, and take its time.

i think you should post less hard ;)

have a nice day, though and enjoy the weekend :D

I believe they are working to deadlines - dates that we don't know. A good software house works to deadlines otherwise you end up with not producing enough output.

We all would like another patch but personally I am comfortable with the concept it will be out when its out. I don't see a huge clamour also on the forums for them to issue beta 2.

My guess is the "delay" is a combination of holidays and work on network/instance problems. 1.04 was interesting as FD have typically not produced a patch version several weeks after a stage was delivered. That would indicate to me that the areas 1.04 addressed are key elements they want addressed. I would not be surprised to see a 1.05 next week and beta 2 around the time of the show in London.

To use DB's analogy - the house needs to be fit for occupation before you put the furniture in and beta 2 is all about furniture.

Extra time now getting things stable to me is very worthwhile - it also allows them more time to add stuff to beta 2. So although we wait it should make beta 2 an even more massive release.

Big pressure is not always a bad thing, some people need it to work better.

Also I think the right word would be "passionate" work, and seems like it really works. Just compare the results with some other game ones that I will not mention. :D

Not wanting to sound harsh but they are doing a job the same as everyone else who works does. It's up to Frontier to manage their staff in a way that allows them to do their best work without getting stressed / burnt out.

Unfortunately (or fortunaetly), FDEV has to cater not just for backer expectations, but also for shareholders and creditors. In addition to their own balance sheet.

For the backers, there is no commitment on the release date. and for the shareholders, it has been declared that ED is independent and not submitted to the pressure from shareholders

:)

I agree I would rather they take their time than rush for Q4 release. That said, they have put themselves under pressure by the nature of an IPO earlier in the year.

All I do ask for is a little more communication ;) I'm having to play in Solo mode after the latest patch and lost my cobra last night due to the insurance bug. 1.04 has some issues and it would be great for these to be addressed, if not by patch by placating words before the weekend.

If Frontier are under pressure, then it's because they chose to be. They decided to try and start ED as a Kickstarter project in order to fund it, and they themselves imposed their own pressure by proclaiming the full game release as being Q4 2014 - that's the reality of it.

That's not to say I'm not completely without empathy for them, or that I'm being overly-critical - not at all.

I wish Frontier all the best, I'm right up there in front to cheerlead them on, and I'm impressed so far (with some caveats) with what they've accomplished - I even recommend ED to people I know, so in a way I'm making a small contribution towards Frontier's success by advocating for the game.

There's a Japanese phrase I wish to say : Frontier, ganbatte! ( Frontier 頑張って!! )

FDEV is certainly NOT independent, as a consequence neither is ED: FDEV has external investors/shareholders (2012 IPO et al) and creditors whose expectations and returns need to be managed.

So, given the above, why would you think that "it has been declared that ED is independent and not subject to shareholder pressure"? Do you have a link for that?

Given how the whole Gametek debacle transpired, I'd be surprised if Frontier have put themselves under any pressure to release "on time" (other than from the wierdos on this board).

It's not like the "competition" is going to be in any position to release before ED is good and ready (and then some).

If they are feeling the strain, I would advise them to heed the words of Douglas Adams, who famously said "I love deadlines - I love the whooshing sound they make as they go by".

A huge amount of the angst, doubt and confusion on the forum would be eliminated at a stroke if FD did more to keep people informed. A newsletter's fine but showing a decal here and a new station design there doesn't do much to answer the two biggest questions.

When's the next beta expected (emphasis) to drop?
Is ED still expected (emphasis) to launch 2014?

Instead we get 1.04 out of the blue and that's yer lot. And when the questions inevitably start up again, all we get is a smug 'soon ™'.

All that's needed is a little transparency and less of the secretive 'need to know' nonsense. Everyone here has backed this game early and the vast majority have a genuine connection to this game. A more emotionally invested and passionate crowd you'll struggle to find. We don't want much and we're even paying to test for heaven's sake, so show us some appreciation and keep us informed.

Unless FD don't have any real release schedule, and are just throwing darts at a calendar and hoping it all works out in the end. Nah, couldn't be...
