Engineers Engineering... it's time.

I started playing (seriously) right after Christmas... (I used to play Elite on the commodore 64 in the late 80's).

My nephew and I started out in our Sidewinders and worked over Christmas break... eventually settling on mining (with the new update).

Since then, I've knocked together about 600 mil and a fully capable Python mining ship (stepping up from an Asp Explorer). Been core mining Void Opals...

I really would like to transition to do some exploring... spend some time out of the bubble... but from everything I've read, really before that... I need to get some Engineering work done (FSD).

Or some combat...

I was looking for some ideas on a ship / build while I work on Engineer quests.

What's the most flexible way to go?

I have some money to invest, but really kind of lost on how to get started.

Will I be fighting mostly to scavenge the Engineering parts?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I recommend a ship with good jump range and an SRV just for collecting mats or flying to the engineer to bookmark a mod. DBX, AspX, Dolphin, etc.

Hi CMDR Drak

Best Exploration ships are:
Diamondback Explorer – cheapest
Asp Explorer – best all rounder
Krait Phantom – new and most flexible

You will need to unlock Felicity Farseer for engineering the FSD - you can find out what you need at Inara which will tell you all of the materials you need and how/where to collect them
https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineer/1/

Here is a basic Asp Explorer build – only the FSD is engineered for increased jump range
https://s.orbis.zone/1uc8

Most engineering materials are either collected on planets surfaces, scanned or collected at locations.

I would highly recommend Exigious tutorials on Youtube

Good luck

I would agree with the above! It seems as
If you already have an aspx this may bethe way to go.In addition to farseer once you are able to get the dweller open you can engineer your pd to engine capacity to get the most boost out of the lowest d rated pd possible to lower your weight. Additionally you can use the lowest A rated pp to suit your power needs (you can always unplug certain modules such as the vehicle hanger, pd, sensors, shields, cargo hatch in SC to
Lower power draw and heat production). By using the lowest rated A pp you will have improved heat efficiency to the entire ship making your scoop times improved and overall exploration more efficient. You can further engineer your pp to low emmisions to
Further improve heat efficiency nova
Heri If you have her unlocked. These would be the first steps I would take.Following this professor palin and his dirty drive tuning will improve you maneuvering in sc and further improve your efficiency! Engineering can be a blast! Good luck!

One big thing to remember about engineering: G3 mods give ~75% of the performance boost of a G5 mod at ~5% of the effort. Don't feel the need to get G5 everything immediately (and certainly don't feel the need to max out all your G5 mods) - you'll get a much bigger boost much sooner by going for breadth rather than depth of mods, and you're less likely to burn out on it.

Engineering parts can be obtained in a variety of ways. Most of them don't require combat - and technically none of them require combat if you use a materials trader - but combat can certainly be the quickest way to get some manufactured parts. Scanning every ship you see in supercruise, and scanning every wake you see as you leave stations, will over time get you a lot of nice data without having to really try. If you've been doing laser mining, then you'll probably have a good selection of raw materials already.

You don't really need to engineer to explore, but the extra jump range is useful if you want to explore things more than a few thousand LY from the bubble, or in a "slower" ship. Elvira Martuuk also upgrades FSDs, and leads to more useful later engineers for a non-combat pilot than Felicity Farseer ... on the other hand, Farseer has some nice mods in the G1-3 range which it'll take you a bit longer to get access to otherwise.

1. Don't overlook Elvira for FSD if you are in that area of the bubble.

2. No need for any combat to get the materials for engineering. Dav's Hope for manufactured, Jameson's Cobra for encoded, Bug Killer for encoded plus elements or Koli Discii for just elements (avoid Orrere it is buggy).

3. Materials traders are your friends.

I did the explorer package for my alt account. I started her around Christmas as well. Unlocked Felicity and upgraded everything she offers. I went the extra step for the guardian FSD booster to get the +10.5ly to jump range, which makes up for all of the other engineering I skipped.

Krait Mk2, 52ly range, SRV, SLF, nice big scoop. I'm on my way now to Omega Nebula on a back road. Already made new discoveries of ELW, WW, AW. Enjoying the new explorer tools.

The first thing I wanted to say was thanks for all advice. It was well received.

So I kitted out the Asp Explorer and managed to end up around 35.43 LY jump range. It was actually fun being able to jump from Sol to Deciat in a few jumps...

I also made my way to pick up some Metal Alloys and bought my way into farseers….

Now, taking a look at some of the items she's requesting, it looks like Dav's Hope might be the place to pick some of these items up...

Only my kitted out ASP only has 10 cargo... lol.

So.. I'm assuming, some swapping happens, as I perhaps lessen the range and add a little more cargo?

Or should I get a larger capacity ship and head over there and farm? And if I do that, is there a way to transfer cargo?

Thanks again! Enjoying myself

For mats Dav's Hope and the Bug Killer Anaconda are on the same side of the bubble.
Mats don't use cargo space.

The Guardian FSD booster is pretty fun and relatively easy to get, for after you upgrade your FSD fully.

I'd suggest Dweller and Lei Chung as your next engineer unlocks.

After that I'd look at Martuuk > Qwent > Palin.

Thanks Bob!

I made it to Dav's Hope and I'm doing collector runs. It seems kinda jenky to leave the game over and over for respawn, but it appears all the cool kids are doing it... ;)

Once I get done here, I'll look for Bug Killer Anaconda (never heard of it). I'll head over there and collect.. and then hit a materials trader as I need things.

I plan on going after the guardian for sure (thanks for the tip).

Its happening!
