Need a hand re-downloading the game.

Anyone able to point me in a direction where I can download a copy of the current full game directory without using the installer?

Being a citizen of the magnanimous U.S. of A. I find myself in the current position of only being able to get my internet access for my PC from a single company with a 20gb data cap, while I pay less for unlimited data for my smartphone. I'd like to pick up ED again but I really don't want to blow my data cap for the month on a game when I've got more serious things I need to do with it, like pay bills and work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone had a great set of holidays and if you're a fed employee in the u.s. right now I hope you had a hobby or second income to help get you through the current crap-fest our elected officials have created.

Tether your smartphone to your PC using USB and download using your unlimited data? I'm pretty sure the installer is the only way to get the game.

And I'd be downloading for 3 weeks, all of the cell companies throttle tethering in the states. Not to mention the last time I tried it I had to restart twice because of corruption. I was hoping someone with a great connection might have already or be willing to drop an archive on a file host or a torrent. It's been known to happen around these parts.

Not like this is some sort of piracy or anything. Always online, I've got to log in after I download, it just doesn't matter how I download it. Same thing as taking your beta install and copying it over to your main folder on launch so you don't have to download the whole 8gb or whatever again, just the last patch taking it to the live servers.

I fear the launcher is the only way to get the game, yeah. You might try to download half of it and then pause the installation, quit the launcher and restart it after you data pool is refreshed. Not sure if that would work, but it might.

Not that my comment will help but THIS is the reason why I'd prefer to continue installation of games and such via DVD disk instead of downloading them from "the cloud". Not everyone has "unlimited" interwebs on their internet connection.

BTW, I don't suppose you can pay them more for a higher cap, right?

I'm confused about what exactly you need. If you need to download the game, won't that be the same size no matter where you get it from?

In principle I'd be happy to help but I'd need to understand what you need and if it's something I can do. I've got the Steam installation on my PC.

I can stick my install directory in an archive and send it somewhere, after which you could extract it to your system and have the installer validate the game files.

However, if you are simply going to download the game from an alternate location then transfer the files to your home system, it's probably easier for you to put the installer on whatever system you'll be downloading the game from.

There might be copyright issues.

The private messaging on here from a mobile is a hot dumpster fire. Getting weird message not found errors and such.

So, I'm making a .7z of the game directory and I'll upload it to my OneDrive or make a .torrent for you. Upload speed is about 2.5MB/s and it's 18.4GB. I'll let you know when it's cooked and ready to eat :)

This is exactly what I needed and why, for those asking questions earlier. There are no copyright issues, and the installer isn't the only way to get the game. You just need to drop the files in the right folder and let it verify that they are up to date and you're good to go. And I'll be downloading it to my phone so I can get full speeds. Can't run the installer on a phone. I even tried grabbing a windows emulator and Wine and downloading through those, they don't work well on my LG G6.

Looks like Bayaz is stepping up to the plate in his Gentleman and Scholar's robe. If any of you see him before I do out in the wild please be a good sort and buy him a drink.

But as a note: Copies of installations are always useful for communities to keep around on the cloud. You never know who might need them or why.

Well, the "elite-dangerous-64" game/product directory, with all logs and personally identifiable information removed, is still nearly 19GB and cannot be compressed further.

I can upload a 19GB file, but I don't have anywhere I can put something that large for download.

I was about to say Onedrive but realized at the last moment that my 1tb limit is because I use office 365.

My next bet would be https://www.transferbigfiles.com/ - not as permanent should someone else need it after me, but they allow up to 5 downloads so it'll get us by for now.

It'll probably be 4.0 before anyone needs another copy of the installation anyways.

... By the way, what'd you find in the main folder that had personally identifiable information? I thought that was all stored under "user" files. I think I may need to do some checking on that after I finish the verification. I don't like the idea of personal information being in my installation folder. [blah]

Doesn't anyone remember FTP?

Even Microsoft does, and it's even part of Windows, you just need to turn it on, configure it, and you're transferring files of whatever size you like.

But, guy not wanting to blow out your download cap, you're still going to blow out your download cap, even if the host .ACE archives or .UHARK's it. It's still a massive amount of data.

Heaps of places offer free Wifi. Plop a laptop in a backpack and enjoy breakfast, coffee, lunch, afternoon shopping while the installer does it's best, and you hope your battery lasts :D

Or try the library and read a book for the transfer?

I'd prefer not to have to create an account anywhere, so something direct like FTP or it's derivatives would be better.

The netlogs (which contain friends lists, chat logs, and ip addresses) mainly, but also the install and client logs, to a lesser degree (directories with unique names, if one didn't use the defaults).

I'd rather not run an FTP server on my end, but if someone else wants to, I'll log into it...

So turn on Hyper-V, fire up the FTP until the transfer is complete, then delete the VM. Nothing left.

Leaving remnants on my system was never a concern.

I'll put the directory in an archive and drop the file into a server, but I'm disinclined to open more ports in my firewall, setup an FTP server, and allow someone access for a protracted period of time.

Laptop? Why would I own one of those useless boat anchors?

Serious note though, if I live somewhere where I can't BUY decent internet for all of the monies I dare spend on it, what do you think the odds are that the businesses around here have decent free Wifi?

Fastest free wifi I've found - I'd die of a heart attack from eating their food before I left the Mcdonalds.

Completely forgot about the netlogs and such. They don't hold many dangers for me though. Thanks.

Bayaz just got me a link, you don't need to trouble yourself anymore. Thank you for all of the effort. Might want to drop that archive somewhere handy in case it's needed in the future though.

Don't blame you about being antsy about FTP. There's a reason it's become a relic. I used to work in a business where every other business we worked with - and we worked with a lot of other businesses - liked to use FTP for file transfers. A few years ago I started having to call them one by one every week or less to let them know they'd been hacked after getting spam mails or seeing botnet activity in the FTP files. One by one they all switched from FTP, but only after learning the hard way.

It’s less about remnants and all about isolating the VM. But looks like the OP got what he needed.
OP - might want to keep a backup of that on a USB device should you need it in the future.
