Rear view mirror

The original Elite had a rear view option. This £10k shopping trolley has a reversing camera. I can buy a dash-mounted camera in Halfords for less than £100.

There's no good reason for Eiite ships not to have a rear view, please can we have one? It could be a simple toggle that flips the view out the back (less realistic, but presumably relatively trivial for coding purposes), or it could be a panel in the cockpit that displays such a rear view.

PS: if anybody from Kia is reading this, I can sell you my advertising services for very competitive rates.

Considering cameras are becoming a common feature in cars and trucks right now, I would like something better for the year 3305 than just a mirror. The cameras should at least be gimballed, so we can have a look around.

I don't think only a rear view would do. Some ships have the cockpit on the front which doesn't allow you to look at the sides much. To get a complete view, we would need cameras for below, behind, above, Right and left depending on the ship.

It's a big question whether the game engine is capable of such picture-in-picture / view-in-views.

An always-on rear view (say, in the bottom-left view in the HUD) would be great, but as an alternative, a "hold button to switch to a fixed rear view in Camera Suite, then return to cockpit on release" would be a good compromise, if fast enough at switching.

A simple button to show the rear view (like GTA since at least Vice City, for example), would be all that's needed.

Second, third, and fourth this motion!

I seem to remember most of the space ship games in the 20th century had rear view cameras too, like Wing Commander, X-Wing, etc.

Rep and +1 :)

I know we have a weird, 'camera mode' which can sort of do this through some kind of magitech already, but a proper rear view like in old elite would be useful.

Or even if the external camera would remember which way you'd left it pointing, that would be an improvement.

At low speeds, you can use the FSS to look all around to help orient yourself (which I find really useful when I need to find something nearby that's out of view of the cockpit).

But a quick toggle reverse view where all the targeting controls are still enabled would be ideal, particularly if it could be moved the same as headlook in cockpit.

There is no up or down in space, just as there is no front or rear.

Well up/down requires you to have a reference....
Front and Rear does not require any reference, these are by design. You need need to lok at the ships kits, where we have front bumbers. Yup, in location where you sai theire is no front or rear, we have front bumbers... that goers where? on the front of the ships.. not sides, rear or top/bottom, the front.

But the notion of having a rear view mirror might be useless for other purposes, as I find it very unlikely that the other ship is right behind you. as they are equally likely to over, under ,to your sides, as being behind you in situations when you would need to use the mirror to locate it, so in about 20% of the situations would you be able to locate the ship by looking though the rear view mirror....

Hello. External rear camera still cannot remember exact position you choose last time, and its default back view is set on artistic angle and is not something that useful for orienting and for sure not something that works well with immersive piloting.
Relatively new player here, I think we still need that simple rearview option for pilots. Pretty please, that will massively decrease the strange feel of you not being able to understand how close or far things are from your hull, just because of the aesthetic of your cockpit manufacturer.

Fine, fine...

The original poster is asking for an after view. Follow on posters have requested port and starboard, and ventral and dorsal, views.

Living up to your handle is not a compliment in this case.

There should be multiple camera views available. A ventral landing camera, and aft view at the minimum would be nice.
I have got along fine without them so far though.

I suppose it might be possible to make a macro or script that made use of the external view to mimic it.
