You know what bugs me? If rings are young and vanishing fast, then I have the feeling that Elite's abundance of rings around gas giants could be a bad call - i.e. visible ring systems must be relatively rare.

If we were to apply the mediocrity principle, while the rings themselves may be ephemeral, events that create rings must be relatively common, since all four of our system's gas giants have ring systems. If anything, I'd say that Elite underselling it. ;)
