My Jump distance is poor compared to coriolis, my ship is from years ago, help please

I have an imperial clipper with grade 5 FSD jump distance engineered module.
My unladen jump distance is 23ly

My ship is a-rated modules

I noticed on coriolis that stock clippers jump 27 ly

I should be able to jump much further, shouldn't I? I saw a post other day someone saying his clipper can jump 50LY.

I'm not interested in min -maxing my ship for jump range, but I was wondering if it's because my ship was bought years and years ago. I haven't played much for the past 3 years. The FSD module as well as the clipper itself probably predate horizons, or possible 2.1-2.2 era I did play again, I just can't remember when exactly I bought the ship.

Thanks.

Was wondering if I should sell this ship and buy a new clipper

Appears it's my bad build. Very heavy ship, I used to just think A-rated meant best possibility.

Also, I'm not exploring with this ship. It was originally a combat ship right now I'm using it for mining.

D rate everything except FSD & PP, and get a guardian FSD booster.

You need to post your setup and what purpose you want the clipper for. My above answer is simplistic and works for exploration.

If every module you have is A rated you are running an incredibly heavy ship. No wonder your jump range is low.

As said by Dognosh, the A-rated gear is heavy. Of course, you need that for the FSD, but everything else can do with losing some weight.

The Guardian mini-game for the FSD booster is a worthwhile diversion (in my opinion) and worth the effort.

If you want extra boost speed, you could engineer your D-rated thrusters. Or tolerate them as A-rated and lower the weight of everything else. Or engineer lighter-weight A-rated thrusters.

Yea, didn't realize that

I guess the engineered FSD is the only thing getting my jump range up so high.
I'm not looking to explore, I've actually been using this as a miner ship for a few days because when I came back all I had was this and a FDL. Back when I played a lot, for combat I just A-rated a clipper and eventually decided to switch to FDL, then stopped playing. I guess I'll downgrade some modules and get rid of the weight. I didn't really consider that, I just assumed it was a "pre patch" ship or something

You should post your build. BTW, the stock iClipper doesn't a stock jump range of 27 LY, that the max with the lowest weight unengineered modules.

He probably has the legacy FSD engineering and probably has a bad roll. OP, I would re-engineer your FSD for starters.
You're probably right, I remember doing engineering back when the little slider bars moved back and forth and landed wherever. I remember re-rolling for better rolls, not sure how good it is. Can I just upgrade the module with the new system, will it over write the old stuff?

If i recall correctly it'll convert your roll to the new system - decreasing the stats you have by a bit but giving you a headstart for the new system. Speaking of which, it works really similar, but rolls dont require commodities anymore and are not replacing each other but instead are additive... meaning with each roll you're guranteed a improvement.

Its much better. So much better.

A very simplistic unengineered build for SOLO mode, work with it and adjust or engineer as needed(you need to engineer FSD, & PP for this build or put bigger PP on it)

Once again, it is only a starting point, change to suit you :)

Based on what you said in your OP I assume that to be the case, and that's probably the biggest factor holding you back.

Re-engineer with increased range mod + mass manager experimental effect.
If it's currently G5 it will typically convert to a new G4, and you can re-roll to max from there.

You have to go to Farseer or Martuuk's to do the conversion but you can now "pin" the blueprint and complete it remotely.

Use D rated life support and sensors to save mass.

Is it wise to use a Clipper for mining in this way?

Seems like the new mining toys work a lot better when mounted on a ship's centrally-located hardpoints.

I guess you can probably compensate for the offset positions if you're determined to use a specific ship but it isn't optimal.

I have the same reservations.

That would be probably me. Right now I'm exploring in 52 LYs jumping Clipper. Stock E-rated has only 8 LYs or so, mine is built for exploration and I have put:
- A-rated FSD
- G5 increased range FSD engineering
- 4H guardian FSD booster
- D-rated other stuff
- downgraded PP and PD
- overcharged PP engineering
- lightweight engineering (G-1 only) where I could apply it

I believe I could push my build close to 60 but I don't have access to Engineers that provide wanted engineering plans. Mine build is rather extreme example but re-engineering FSD under new rules should give you anything between 30 and 40 LYs of range, depending on the rest of the stuff you have.

Another thing about the Clipper is that it seems to have a set of internals deliberately intended to be irritating.

Most of the good stuff (things like collectors and GFSBs) come in odd-sizes and the Cliiper doesn't have many suitable slots.
If you want to bung a 5H GFSB in a Clipper, you've got to use the C6 slot, which is a waste... and it leaves you with the choice of a C7 or C4 fuel scoop.
If it was me, I'd probably bung a 7A fuel scoop in there, for exploration, so it's not the end of the world.
Just seems a bit like the slot allocation is intended to be... frustrating.

How true.

faced that when I was building mine. 7A scoop, 5H booster in 6-size slot, 4G hangar with dual rovers (overkill, dunno why took that), 4A AFMU, 3D shields and repair limpet controller, 2E cargo for 4x limpets. And DSS. All slots filled, totally secured (AFMU + repairs), spare rover and nothing more. I surely could use different slot layout and rearrange things. But Clipper comes with what it has so I had to choose. Hence bit strange build. But it works, jumps far, does not overheat while scooping (I feel 7A is overkill, 6A would be optimal - but again, tradeoffs) and I can scoop to full while passing star at 100% throttle.

16t fuel tank is small, max range jump can burn up to 6t. But again, quick scoop makes it non issue.

I still wish for really deep engineering where you can exchange slot sizes. I would exchange weapon compartments for exploration oriented modules. This way I could pick a hull I like and turn it into MY explorer ship. Now I'm somewhat limited to few options. Le sigh. Anyway, I'm happy that I pushed my Clipper past 50 LYs. I feel it's good compromise between size, capabilities and my expectations.
