For those who say that space legs are pointless...

I'm going to say it again, as I don't think people are getting this:

Space legs does not = FPS.

I've read on the forum of a racing simulator, that instead better driving experience, the community asked for the option to wake up in the hotel, get dressed, drive to the racetrack, use the toilet before the race, get dressed again, throw kisses at the grid girls, walk to the car climb into it...

Said no one ever. Because it is absurd.

The old LEP info mentioned combat pretty prominently for the Legs entries:

  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports

latest

Although the 'stealth' concept art is suggestive of some slightly leftfield takes knocking about.

Both aspects are good in principle to this player.

The entire Elite series always had combat front and center of absolutely everything, ever. Same with ED. It is why pretty much ALL elite trailers are filled with combat, and very few to none are about trading and exploration. Some 'feel' that is wrong, and act very upset every time an ED patch adds something combat related. I'd be very surprised if spacelegs wont have a hefty combat element.

However, I hope it is done with a bit more creativity than what Star Citizen does, which is basically bolt-on a mediocre 1G Cry-Engine shooter on top of what is supposedly a spaceflight game.

Except players are expecting it, it'll be tears before bedtime if it isn't included.

Never said it not be included. But there would be far more to having 1st person game play then just shooting. In the same way that there is far more to SC on foot game play then just shooting.

I just see a lot of post here that seem to assume there would be nothing more than an FPS. Which is quite limited thinking.

I think it should be clear that when some people refer to no FPS, they don't necessarily mean there won't be combat in a first person view. You wouldn't call Fallout 4 an FPS, for example, despite having a first person perspective and shooting from it.

Most people, when they say FPS, are thinking of Call of Duty type shooters, with dozens of different weapon choices, grenades, rapid respawns, and so on.

I'd argue that it will be first person perspective, but the shooting will be more akin to the SRV. Simple, basic, and intended for use other than just shooting up other SRVs.

My guess? A multipurpose pistol that can also be used for other purposes (ie taking samples like the SRV), plus a wrist-based computer for other kinds of interaction (ie hacking).

Don't expect laser rifles and rocket launchers and grenades and all that, or objective hold points, or battle royale....

Well OK, FO 4 is a looter-shooter with crafting and rpg/story elements. But mainly a looter-shooter. Cos that's what you do mostly.

Sure, call it what you will... I'm just saying using the term "FPS" brings up a very specific kind of gameplay. I think the concern a lot of people have is they think that for some reason it HAS to be like those other games. Let's face it, it's the Shooter part that justifies that thinking. A lot of people are using FPS as just a shorthand for first person gameplay, without intending to mean Call of Duty style combat.

I honestly hope atmospheres come first but if legs hit tomorrow what would you girls prefer 1st or 3rd person. I would like to see 3rd over the shoulder. Absolutely no COD quick scoping trash. (Edit) To be fare for VR users I'm guessing it would have to be 1st person.

id like 3rd person. I think a flat screen cuts too much peripheral vision. Except in VR. Then you are in game. I’d like to see that as amazing as Lone Echo.

It would have to be in first person or else people would argue for flying their ships in third person as well (which will never happen).

But, like with ships and SRVs, there will be an external camera view.

Not really into the FPS stuff myself. But some extra gameplay with geology or entering an alien/abandoned facility could be cool. Walking out in the station to visit a handful of quest givers, spread across the galaxy, for special quests is something that sounds good as well. With an option to visit generic quest givers but also be able to still take those missions directly from the mission board. Would probably need a new buggy or shuttle service to get around those massive starports, though!

Ah ok, I thought you were suggesting it wasn't on the cards. Fair play.

Yep I agree their outlines speak to more than just pewpew. Searching wrecks, repair, EVA generally, NPC interactions in stations etc.

I do think, if they have the resources, it'd be good to have some diverse suits and weapon/tool loadouts. IE, similar to ships, balancing your suit and kit towards stealth / combat / mining / repair etc.

I think, given ED's relatively slimline resources they'd have to focus on first person primarily, with 3rd person as a luxury down the line if they did it at all. It's a lot of work to get both functioning, and as you say, they already have the potential challenge of getting both VR and flatscreen versions working together (which brings a lot of design challenges in its own right).

I see no point for walking around in a space ship game.

You might say tthere was no point in driving around, but yet there's the SRV.

Seeing that in DW waypoints there are loads of parked ships and lots of player SRVs faffing around on the ground, I would say there are many people who are glad to have the chance to leave their ships and do something else for a while.

I'd never even considered they would include 3rd person. I'm not sure it's what they originally planned, I suspect it was all 1st person. But who knows

But what would they do? What IS it they would do? Apart from shooting each other.
