Just lost at least 170 million credits - ARGH!

Just spent 3 - 4 hours mining for void opals - no NPCs anywhere. Fired a prospecting limpet. Game crashed - rejoined game - checked my 110 - (117?) void opals were still there :D along with my diamonds and anderite? great - was then instantly attacked by NPCs . and died. !

I know i might have been attacked on the way back when i decided to go back to cash in, but no NPCs for 90 minutes game crash, restart then NPCs straight away - REALLY? - give me a break. ARGHHHHHH!!!!! Nuff said!

Pro tip here, whenever you drop in to a mining ring or RES, there will be NPC pirates. This is NBD if you are just getting there and only have limpets in the hold, but they will attack if you have anything more.

You were not instantly attacked, they always issue a demand, then a warning. I use a python for mining and I have a rated thrusters, with 4 pips to ENG i can keep boosting. The method is as follows.

1) drop out of SC/load instance
2) target one of the chumps
3) boost away from them until they jump out (should only take a minute or two.)

Happy hunting!

The sad truth here is: That NPC-Pirate spawning was guaranteed to happen, and not even in an ironical way.
They always spawn when you initialize a ring-instance.
If you start mining you can just wait till he has scanned you and leaves, but with hold full of 'tasty cargo'? Fight or flight

Was there not a demand for some of your cargo? If there was I take it you missed it. Annoying as it would be it's worth keeping an eye out for that so the pirate hopefully goes away after you've dropped a few canisters. Pirates are pretty much guaranteed to spawn as soon as you enter a ring, and that inludes when you relog in following a crash.

Of course, if there was no demand for cargo and the npc just attacked, I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to do that.

Edit: Slow typing today. Ninja'd by a couple of people.

Predictable NPC arrives as predicted.

Hope he had enough collectors to scoop up all that lovely loot - champagne tonight at the pirate bar!

I say flight.
I had a 'Competent' ranked pirate spawn on me after a re-log. And he melted my reinforced 2000 hp Cobra mk IV in a very short time.

If I were a Miner by trade, I would always have an SLF with me. Sic the SLF on the Pirate and just Boost away. Basically a Get-Out-Of-Death-Free Card. Assuming you don't Shoot at them, they will switch Targets and let you Escape.

Reminds me of the time i lost a similar amount in different circumstances. I'd finished mining and had a hold near full of various high end minerals , not just Void Opals. I'd looked up a good place to sell which was only a few jumps away. Was nearly at the station when a RL situation started to develop. Just as I get the blue light indication that I can drop out by the station, the RL situation has got to the point of going AFK to deal with it. So I hit the key to drop out of SC and deal with the RL situation. When I get back I'm on the rebuy screen. I was a little puzzled as to what had killed me. Then I discovered it was a 'noob hammer' style Coriolis station and it all became clear. An expense lesson was learnt in that session.

What happens when the game induces complete destruction of your ship (like from that server CTD respawn inside the asteroid) and you have no insurance?

Do you get refunded your entire ship (minus your hard earned mining proceedings?)

Or do you get to start over yet again in that @#$%!& toaster of a starter ship?

I guess what I'm really asking is:
What happens when you save up just enough to buy your desired ship. But are now completely broke and don't have enough credits to cover insurance. So you're trying to earn credits using your newly upgraded mining ship. And in process of doing so, end up losing it to NPCs or a game crash like the one you described. Before you were able to save up enough for the insurance.

Do you basically lose 100% of all that hard work and effort then? i.e. get down graded back to your freebie starter flying wafflemaker?

Every time you respawn in a hotspot, NPCs will be there. Every single time. You have to be prepared to put 4 pips to eng and start boosting right away. If you do that, you will easily escape them before they scan you.

So I tested this in a ring about 50LY from the DW2 CG - in no case have I seen an NPC spawn in the ring, at any time. I've logged out and back on, had my game crash while mining, and not once have I seen an npc. I have seen them in the "normal" fashion in the ring Omega Station is in. So there must be some mechanism now that prevents them spawning in "remote" rings (I have no clue what constitutes "remote", however...)

Depends, you can get a loan to cover the cost of a replacement if you can't quite afford the re-buy costs.
