General / Off-Topic Scottish Independence

For the first time, a poll conducted for the Sunday Times and YouGov and published this Saturday night, giving a victory for the supporters of independence in Scotland with 51% of the vote against 49% for the defenders of maintaining the United Kingdom.

There does seem to be a shift towards the 'yes' camp. Whatever the outcome, it will be decided by the ballot box and not by bombs and bullets.

There is a significant chance of an Euro using EU member Scotland emerging. I don't think it would change things that much on the British Isles.

We Europeans are all in this together ultimately. It will be interesting to see what the Scots decide.

I can see Scotland voting yes, then there being a backlash against the SNP when people realise they've been mis-sold.

Also the Yes campaign are mobilising nationalism and anti-English sentiment, this is not something that can be put back in the box afterwards. There might not be ethnic cleansing, but it'll certainly be harder for people with English accents after a yes vote to live there.

Salmond is all about fulfilling his personal ambition to be head of state. He doesn't actually care if in 20 years Scotland is bankrupt and impoverished.

We have the same problem in Canada. The English have always been too generous with the losers in wars they have won. Generally, they let the conquered maintain their lives, religion, and customs, and become part of the larger empire. Almost inevitably, it seems that it comes back to haunt later generations.
The majority of people just want to get on with their lives, but the rabble rousers, for many varied reasons, like stir up the contented populace, and try to convince them that they are a downtrodden minority ruled by the English.
Lest anyone think that this is a putdown of any national or ethnic group, let it be known that in my own heritage I have English,Scot,Irish, and French. I'm proud of each and every branch. Some people just don't know when they are well off. I'm sure that the Scots would have fared much better in the Russian Empire. Just ask Ukrainians.

I don't feel your grasp of British history is as detailed as it should be. England and Scotland were not joined by conquest, but by Act of Parliament. If the Scots wish to dissolve the Union, then there is no constitutional reason for them not to that I am aware of. There certainly won't be a British Civil War to maintain the Union.

As far as I am aware the Queen will remain as head of state for England and Scotland, re-establishing the situation that existed before the Act of Union.

I have Scottish ancestry and a Scottish wife. I have no particular opinion about devolution but I do have one about Alex Salmond. I have no time for politicians of any hue, but this guy seems to possess all the qualities I dislike about the breed in such abundance that I find it hard to see past him.

Mrs. Kappa is much more succinct than me on this one these days. Apparently he used to visit an aunt that lived near to where she grew up, and she tells me she met him a number of times during her late teens and early 20's - an obnoxious little twerp even then by her account. In conversation, she always identifies him as 'King Alex'.

Maybe, but Alex Salmond has steered a formerly seriously fringe movement into a position where it might achieve its stated goal. He only has one vote same as everyone else who lives in Scotland.

That'll be in the detail. Salmond said that the Queen could be monarch of Scotland if she sits in Scotland, a condition that he knows is impossible. If he gets independence he'll use that so you could see within 5 years another referendum on becoming a republic.

President Salmond of the Socialist Republic of Scotland? *shivers* (Not that I think he's a socialist, just will jump on whatever policy he thinks will get him most votes)

Personally I'm from yorkshire our plan is to let scotland become independant and then appeal to be liberated !
Though I there may have to be some changes to the skins.
