Orrery concept and current orrery

The concept for the orrery look awesome to me. There is a background, you can actually see how suns and planets are and there is even your current location displayed among other things. They can of course improve it over time, but in the mean time, what do you think?

Agreed, the concept looks better than the current iteration. Personally, I hardly ever use the orrery. Even if it looked prettier, I doubt I'd use it much more. I'd rather FDev allocate their resources elsewhere.

I use it a bit when I find a interesting system with lots of off-plane bodies and multiple bodies orbiting each other because I like to see how it all relates. Wouldn't mind a bit more polish, textured planets for discovered systems and maybe a correct background star-map but agree its not a priority until they can maybe link more gameplay elements to it.

I am glad they added it though even in this limited state.

Simple fix, or first step: have the Orrery use same assets as System Map to display bodies.

Yes, at least the core is there and they can always improve it later when needed.

There needs to be a 3rd option of something like "Combined". This would be the orrery view, but simply with the planets etc displayed out of scale in effect from the standard view.

That would then give a view more akin to the concept images, and also be more enjoyable/useful IMHO.

Before the first step: Have the Orrery stay in the same place when you close and re-open it so you don't have to Zoom into the same mini star system in a full star system of several mini systems to check which is the best route to map the planets or moons you want to get to.

The concept is a poetic map, it exaggerates and beautifies the system. The actual orrery is an actual map. They're diametrically opposed styles of presentation.

FD said they wouldn't make one unless they could see gameplay out of it. With an accurate presentation of a system you can now locate points of interest in a system in their actual locations. You could see an invasion force spreading out from a point of entry for example. I'm hoping FD will use it for gameplay as they said.

Yes, I wonder if it can be done with the scale tho?

Yes, the zoom are insane.

You know that video of No Man's Sky where they playing Jurassic Park music? Yeah..
First part is the concept, the part after is the current implementation:
Ha. I love that video, always makes me laugh. In fact I was looking for it recently and couldnt find it, bookmarked, thanks :D

Sorry, you'll need to help me there?

So a third view option of "Combined" would show the orrey view, but with planets out of scale based on the assets we see in the standard view?

Surely that would give us something very similar to the concept view? And an orrery style view, but with planets that give us a fat better indication of their appearance?

ie: Planets would be displayed far too big at a constant max size, and then as the orrery is zoomed out, and planets get closer to each other, then the planets would be shrunk down to be kept as large as possible, while not impinging on the orbit sizes being displayed etc.

Current orrery suits the functional purpose of plotting planetary scan route. I'd rather the finite resources of FD are spent getting us decent atmospherics to be honest.

I suspect a third "combined" view where the planet assets from the standard view are simply used to display the planets out of scale on an orrery view, would be fairly simple to add? And give a far far more friendly and asthetic orrery (type) view to use? ie: You can instantly see ringed planets while still in an orrery view.

The actual state of orrery is useless.
I'm not using it at all. Too much zoom in and zoom out.

Remove the scale, make it more schematic and colorful like in the concept.

AND PUT IT ON THE HUD RADAR! The HUD radar is completely useless to navigate the stellar system in its current state!

Fair point, I was only really talking from my own perspective.

Can't say I ever use the orrery (I looked at it in the beta...) - it's shame the FSS doesn't make more use of the full 3d view, it could still be centered at your ship's position (or not!), but being able to fully see the system layout (with the blue balls initially) as you're scanning stuff would make it far more interesting.

OK, someone please make a concept of your nicer orrery that is actually remotely usable using this system:

I hear it shouldn't be too hard...

Or just put it on the radar :D
