Constructive suicide?

Just something I was idly wondering about as I trundle across to Colonia...

Given that, upon ship destruction, we now respawn at the nearest station rather than where we undocked, I suppose it might be useful to travel, say, 60% of the way to, say, Rohini, self-destruct and then, when you respawn, travel 60% of the way to Gandharm, repeat, travel 60% of the way to Kashyapa and repeat again, etc.

Equally, if you're out in the middle of nowhere, I suppose self-destructing might be a good way to find out if there's any asteroid bases or stations in the region.

Not really my style but I suppose it could help people get around quicker.... long as you weren't fussed about the data.

Interesting thought. There could be some background roleplay where npcs from a previously pc undiscovered base happened upon your escape pod out in the dark and took you to their nearest station. But I'd hope it doesn't turn out that way as a unintended mechanic to discover bases and stations. For the current respawn system, there is also the scenario where the escape pod has information detailing where the pc cmdr had last docked at. I think FD with their general encouragement of more exploration is allowing more distant frontier stations spread out in the galaxy to be founded and placed serving as more rest stops for distant journeys.

I thought this too (I don't lose ships very often) but Ian Doncaster corrected me in a recent thread. I'll see if I can find the post.

ETA Found it:

The respawn rules are:
- if there's a dock big enough for your ship in the current system, respawn at the closest one of those in the system
- if there's not, respawn you wherever you last docked
- if you have legal issues at the station selected by the above rules, or were killed by someone collecting your bounty, go to a detention centre instead

If you just die in a random system on the far side of the core, you won't be recovered to Colonia but to wherever you last docked. (If it did work like that for uninhabited systems there would be some interesting fast-travel exploits)

The majority of people on this particular expedition once past Sag A* will probably have docked at the new station to be built there, of course.

Hmm. That is a very interesting game mechanic. Exploring for the nearest docking point.. Might make taking a 'Conda less attractive. If the nearest undiscovered place only had medium pads.. could you be placed there ? Probably not.. But an AspX could.

I remember reading someone saying they would stop at stations along the way, pick up a bounty, then get destroyed by the authorities and be sent to a prison ship further down the line. That was awhile ago though, and no clue if it would still work, or even how reliable or practical it was then.

Unless the pilot has a ship with a very low jumprange, or simply isn't interested in exploration, there shouldn't be much use for this tactic. I can't see much time saved unless of course one self-destructs at Beagle Point so as to have a rapid transit back to the nearest starport.

Lol - a whole thread about 'Stealthie doesn't understand the respawn mechanics' :)

(I thought the same thing related to the Gnosis incident, but went to the lengths of actually testing what happened, which made for a much shorter thread :) )

Would you care to enlighten us or is this going to be yet another occasion where you make some snide comment and then disappear?

(Slightly unimmersive) possible solution to that: If you die somewhere far from the next station, you respawn on a smaller rescue megaship which only exists until the next supercruise/FSD jump. The ship should be in a system you previously visited and not appear ahead on the route.

I think it'd be more likely that a 1000ly cap would be put on transfer to the nearest station. Beyond that it's back to you start point. Nice idea though.
