Degrees of freedom

Once in a while my Odyssey seems to lose the full spatial tracking. I can look up and down, left and right but if I lean forward everything shifts forward.

It doesn’t happen very often at all but when it does it’s very annoying and it seems closing down and restarting is the thing to do to get it working again, but I’ve no idea why this happens, if it’s a WMD thing or across all VR devices, if it’s because I’m running too many other programmes and occasionally tabbing out is causing issues. Has anyone else experienced this?

I’m running an i7 6700K, 16Gb Ram and a 1070 with EDMC, Voice Attack and sometimes Dopamine Media player.

On another note. EDMC seems to constantly want me to verify and opens a web page, which again disrupts play. I’ve verified countless times and it has my API key for both EDSM and Inara....anyone else have this or know what’s happening?

Thanks

I had this same issue on my Odyssey. I broke it and got a new one yesterday and it hasn’t done it so far but I’m sure it will. I just keep playing until the 6dof kicks back in. No idea what causes it. Thought it might be too dark in the room at one point but now I doubt it.

Not sure if it's the same, but sounds like something similar I've seen on my Rift. Usually happens after having the headset off with the game running, and putting it back on. Spatial tracking will go, and the view will keep jumping around. Nothing seems to stabilize it until I restart the game. Doesn't happen that often, but has happened a handful of times.

I had this happen the other day while playing War Thunder. Turned out I had my lights down to low. I put them at 50% and once I moved it worked out where I was and got full motion back.

If that isn't your issue, try resetting your environment data. Move around and let it build up data on your play area again.

Thanks for the replies, as a fairly new VR player I’m still feeling a little out of my depth at times with such a variable dependant piece of kit.

Apart from the view jumping around that sounds exactly like what has happened to me. I suspect you may be right regarding removing the headset whilst the game is running. I often take it off whilst I make a coffee whilst leaving the game running or even tighten it around the top of my head whilst I check something on my second PC and type in system names etc. Perhaps I’m pushing it toward a glitch each time I drastically change the view whilst the game is running?

Oheck and Sweet&Dandy - Light levels were an issue I was concerned about before buying the Odyssey/WMD with its inside out tracking as my PC is in my study which gets very hot in the summer causing me to pull the curtains and I often play quite late at night. Having bitten the bullet and bought one though I’ve been hugely impressed with its tracking ability.

Good luck with the new HMD Sweet&Dandy, hope it stays in one piece for you.
