Subnautica - Below Zero

If I recall correctly it took years for Subnautica to come out of Alpha/Beta.

Yep, I had it on early access for a couple of years IIRC. Very good right from the start and nice to test out the new stuff, but this time I'm going to wait and avoid spoilers.

That's one of the reasons why I'm glad I waited for a full release of the original Subnautica and didn't play early access. In a game like that, I can imagine it can totally wreck any sense of wonder and exploration/discovery.

So yeah, no matter if a month or three years long, I'm going to wait for full release, again.

I played it from the earliest betas and I really enjoyed watching the game evolve. Watching from week to week or month to month as new areas became unlocked and developed, and old ones be blocked off as content was changed. That was almost as much fun as playing the game proper.

But I'll buy it day one on release! :D

Yep, by the time the game came out complete I was playing permadeath as otherwise it was just too easy. I stopped playing early access when they added the deeps so all that was new but I'd already mastered pretty much everything it was just working out where to go not how to do things.

It didn't spoil the game for me I really enjoyed it, but I won't do it again.

It was stated on the Steam forum that there will only be two hours of main story to experience in the early access version, so as to not spoil the entire thing.

I certainly hope that it doesn't spend *years* in alpha before release, though.

What a pleasant surprise with EA launching today, I will grab it first thing tomorrow after work! I thought we would need to wait a bit longer for early access.

How much a game are we getting initially with this early access? I'm thinking I'll wait until main release myself but i could be tempted.

My very quick impressions after about 1h of game play (taking in to consideration that its obviously very early stage of development):

Possible spoilers!

good:
-new ice environment and creatures looks very beautiful so far!

not so good:
-so far exactly same game with different environment assets.
-no sense of loneliness, despair, danger like in the first game since you are in constant cute chat with your girlfriend/sister whatever who gives you instructions.
-not a fan of voice actin but it might be early stage of recording

Not sure why this needs to be separate game to be honest. Tiny disappointed for now but remembering that its early stage of developement.

More honest impressions after another session - it sucks. I refunded and will wait for full release hoping it will be more than re-skinned Subnautica with a new story. I`m becoming too forgiving. It sucks in my opinion at this point and I will leave it as that. Hype is no good and it can blind you :)

I didn't realize it was on early access. I put 40 hours into my first play through on the first game and 20 hours on my second play through. If you have a nice PC it's very beautiful and visually stimulating experience. Diving deeper and deeper was a hell of a lot of fun. Very excited for this game.

That's disappointing. The atmosphere of the first game was one of the things I really liked about it. Not sure how I feel about your character always being in contact with another person. That seems contrary to the whole vibe they were so successful with in the first - just you vs nature.

I'm not opposed to more of the same gameplay, but it's a valid point that it probably should have been a DLC rather than a standalone game.

Reskinned subnautica with a new story sounds great to me, on release anyway.

Well, their phrasing is "standalone expansion" which suggests a continuation of the original, including assets and gameplay with the benefit of not needing the original game to play it.

And it's definitely DLC-priced. SO I don't see a problem there.

The supposed change in tone of the game (no "sole survivor feeling" etc.) does kind of worry me and of course I hate that I'm going to have to wait another year. Hey ho.

Just to be fair - your voice buddy in game is your sister not a girlfriend. My bad - not paying attention to the dialogue can bite you in the bottom sometimes :)
One more thing - so far the "below zero" environment does not change the survival aspect - its same as in the first game. From my short experience temperature has no impact on the player.

LOL. Yeah, that's an important thing to not confuse. ;)

Fair enough re: the price.
