PvP PvP Noob Etiquette...?

Hello, I've just started getting in to PvP with my Squadron, GARD.
We're a lawful squadron, so I gave myself the task of patrolling the CG system for murderhobos.
(Note, my ship wasn't particularly PvP spec, and I'm a crap PvP pilot, and I was alone, I don't see how this could possibly go wrong!).

Being a lawful (and utterly useless) CMDR, I left crimes on, because it makes sense.
I'm lawful, and a noob, = law on my side.
(When in reality, they'll turn up 6 hours later and scan me, and leave).

However, a few random CMDRs interdicted me, (all in Kraits..lol) and then told me to turn crimes off, or just left.

Am I supposed to be flying with crimes off, as a law abiding citizen?

For PvP sparring, it would, of course, be off.

But as a self proclaimed protector of the system, surely it's ok to have the law on my side?

Or no?

All in all, my PvP session went better than expected.

I didn't fire a shot. Nor did I die. :p

Crimes on is the way to go for white hats.

Anyway if you're GARD just do as aashenfox suggests and you'll be fine.

Those guys were just trying to trick you, or were whiney, or realized you were so noob they didn't feel like wasting their time and instead wanted like-minded crimes off targets.

Certain groups (pirates, outlaws, etc) have roleplay or pragmatic reasons to run with crimes off, and "pure" PvP'ers do because it interferes with the skill contest. None of that applies to you.

You're correct on sparring but just make sure you really can trust your sparring partner. I personally haven't shanked someone after a "gentleman's agreement" to gg at 30%, but I'm sure it happens.

Also, in case it isn't clear, crimes on won't help you at all from a good murderhobo. It will simply make their life marginally inconvenienced after they kill you. (It can help a little against nooberhoboes, which I suppose are the ones you should be fighting).

Thanks for clearing that up!

I'll keep crimes on for patrolling for maximum annoyance of murderhobos. Lol
I doubt I have the skill to take down a murderhobo alone, so my goal is simply annoy them so they can't annoy anyone else. :D

And I never combat log. Or even menu log.
Too many buttons.
Y for Hyperspace is so much easier. Lol
Not even sure why people bother Clogging...

I'm quite surprised that I didn't automatically high wake after my first interdiction. It's been my default response for years. :D

But anyway, thanks!

I guess we met, right? Let crimes on if you like, and if you want to kill murderhobos. If they complain, their bad.
But don't wonder if they call you names or diss you. I tend to leave crime off nowadays if I genuinely want to fight, but
if I have a mission ("protect the system") I leave it on, too.

Crimes on during patrol. If someone asks for a duel, turn it off. Friendly duels vs randoms are rare at CGs. Its usually griefers bent on my destruction. Yes, I have that effect on people.

Me don't like behaviar of thos lads.

It happen: me ar clean like a baby-face, me see a boat with big booty, so ok let's harpoon and block the Capt'n... then Capt'n scared and shotta my cutlass so he poor man gets the police-lads shotting to his ship (potentially walk the plank) and so get upset about pirates, piracy and etc etc

So, bettar to crime off for respect of our victims, as they must be only ours victims not of tha silly police-lads.

In summary (i think): as a pirate, you keep crimes off so when your victims return fire they dont get swarmed by dem police lads? Traders are known to keep crimes on by default, so I would guess your clean status goes away after the first shot, and you spend a lot of time visiting the I.F.?

I've been thinking about getting into PvP as well, and I have an idea that I just wanted to bring up and see how it's received.

I'd like to create a private group that's dedicated to PvP play, specifically different kinds of skill-drill war games. For instance having games like fox hunt, zombie tag, and other. And I realized one issue is that the "report crime" flag needs to be off for everyone. Which means that it'd be nice if FD added a "crime off" or "PvP" flag that can be set for a PG, i.e. automatically everyone in that PG won't get notoriety.

So what do you think? Is PvP PG, for training, an interesting idea? And would a PvP/No-crime flag for such a PG be something we should ask FD to add?

Until then, everyone meets in the staging system and confirms their crimes flag is turned off before they start firing at each other.

Noob ettiquette?

If the rank is below competant and the ship is obviously papery, don't engage. Not only is there little point or enjoyment to be gained squashing noobs, it also puts them off if they recieve to much of a whipping.

Typically let them ask for a fight and go at least a smidgen easier on them so they have time to learn what to do. Caking someone in 30 seconds does'nt exactly give them much time to improve and in the long run damages your chances of having another good opponent in the future.

I didnt know this about you :D

Which is a perfect setup for griefing. Anyone coming in, with flag on, letting oneself getting killed and giving out notoriety points for free.

Lol don't get me wrong, im a barbarous maniac. But I won't kill people who have no experience. Thats counter productive to the long term continuation of my playstyle.

Whereas folk who just make stupid descisions despite knowing better? (Shieldless traders, explorers turning in data at CG's) I'll waste them all day long with a big cheesy grin on my face.

Why does it need to be in a PG? Why not just do it in open?

Errr... me visit also jail quite oftan... ufertunately.

But yar matey, we do not shotta poor Capt'n unless he get scared and run.

Some Capt'n shott'us befoar we can even beg fer the booty!

As ya say, ya right: if we ar' baby-face clean with crimes "on", once the poor Captn't is wanted the police-lads come to get him.

First of all, I applaud you for taking action instead of just complaining on the forum and I hope that your lack of skill doesn't discourage you because getting gud at PvP takes a lot of practice. And if you haven't already, I would highly recommend switching to PA's and FA/off now if you haven't already. As much as I hate them, I will admit that gimballs have their place but if you lean on them as a crutch from the get go, you're never gonna learn how to aim and get better.

To the topic at hand. In my personal opinion, crimes on is just bad form if you're taking part in any form of PvP and is usually an indicator to us that you're a noob and you should be focused first. However, like others have said, a seasoned ganker won't care either way. My FAS is pretty much always wanted with notoriety so you having crimes on means nothing to me.

On the other hand, using crimes on to play station games is frowned upon by both the "good guy" and "bad guy" communities and is considered a move when taking part in actual PvP.
