EA and the Future

Rogue One was mostly enjoyable because of how terrible the rest of the movies were. But I would have to agree, it's probably the best of the Disney SW movies.

Rogue One is one of the best star wars movies, probably would have been greater if Disney had just trusted its director.

Star Wars Solo wasn't bad, the war scenes at the beginning was pretty awesome, more of that please and less whatever star wars last jedi was about.

I thought Solo was about as interesting as a wet napkin. Which isn't that bad by Disney's standards, apparently :)

I doubt Bioware is on the chopping block
After ME:A, the only "live" products carrying their name are SWTOR (at the rather separate and in-name-only Austin studio) and now Anthem. On top of that, the studio's titles have been selling mostly by fan inertia. If Anthem underperforms, Bioware could be gone faster than you can say "shareholder conference call".

Come on now, Rogue One was enjoyable.

Of the DisneyWars movies, Rogue One is my Fav.. but in the grand scheme of all starwars movies its a 5/10 for me.
My main issue is the lead character 'Jyn Erso... she is an emotionally stunted mannequin of a character..

I simply did not connect to her or care one bit about her plight, When she died at the end i just looked at my watch.

Its not a Gender thing, i just would have preferred a better actress.

The reported plan is to move their sales model to a subscription based one, so that people pay them yearly to get their products. You will be renting those games, not buying copies anymore.

They have some experience with Origin Access now. It seems the logical step on the "X as a service" route, focusing on multiplayer games and even encouraging staying online in singleplayer games. The customers are supposed to see origin as a entertainment service, comparable to Netflix. Wouldn't surprise me if they add more linear media to the store in the near future (similar to steams movie library).
Although I think it will still take some time until physical media is gone entirely (think about the premium editions with added merchandise). They will probably have trial codes included to ease the transition.

I actually like the Star Wars Battlefront games, but I bought them on a ridiculously low sale after EA removed all the "pay to win" aspects that people hated (never experienced it myself). These games are graphical masterpieces on my humble console, and they are fun for short stints before they become repetitive. Even the story mode in the latest game was enjoyable IMO. I just wish flying spaceships was more like ED with 6DoF.

I loved the singleplayer story in Battlefront 2 actually. While I only played five or six MP matches, I spent a couple dozen hours replaying my favourite parts of SP. :)

Their business model is akin to fashion. Play this seasons game, squeeze as much cash out of the punters as possible over the current financial year and then throw another rushed garbage product the year after.

Even with the recent hits diddnt they still make billions..I was going to try that new f2p shooter but Origin keeps crashing on my PC so after the 5th time or so I grabbed the last 3dlc's for fo4 which were on sale on steam and now replying that. EA can jog on for all I care about it or its games.

In 72 hours, Apex Legends, new video game, has seduced 10 million people.

Up to a million people connected simultaneously to test the new version of EA's Respawn Entertainment US studio.

On the stock market, Electronic Arts saw its title climb 5% Thursday and 8% Friday after starting.

EA still has resources, it seems.

Yet this game was something that EA didnt put forward as a spotlight product, instead investing its hopes into Anthem.
I think Apex Legends just appeared without any real fanfare. Suggesting that those in control of EA dont know a good bet.

Shame however that this has happened, i was really looking forward to an EA death rattle sooner than later. i guess it will just have to wait.

It's hard really. There's no doubt that EA has some very business orientated visions in their game designs. This in itself isn't a terrible thing, I don't mind dropping some extra revenue if it's something I like and see value in having. I've done this enough with skins for ED for example. What I take issue with is producing very generic, very bland (yet often pretty) products. They clearly have the resources to produce fantastic products, they own some very talented studios and if they give them more of a free hand to make games that people want to play then they'll do well.

Business types don't make the games that people want to play and shouldn't be the ultimate arbiters on such. It pains me to see vast resources plunged into expensive marketing of lacklustre games when if they put the money into decent story, solid gameplay, good voice acting etc etc It would pay more dividends. Apex Legends is proof of this, it's not perfect but it's a very good product that had no marketing whatsoever. Yet...It's an enormous success.

Indeed the life is unpredictable and the positive or negative events arise where we do not expect them.

:)

The problem with EA and other AAA developers -with the exception of Rockstar-, is that their products mostly lack substance. My favorite example is Assassin's Creed, that has great graphics, loads of content yet gameplay is incredibly bland.
Or look at Cvilization 6. 2K is busy with rolling out DLC civs and wonders when core gameplay (AI) is broken.
And let us forget disasters like Mass Effect and Fallout 76.

On top of it EA merged AAA pricing with F2P/P2W mobile game sales.

I'd hazard a guess that the bulk of EA's revenue is coming from sports franchises, so I think they will be around for a long time, unfortunately.
