More bookmarks + folders please

I have just embarked on the Distant Worlds 2 expedition and am using bookmarks to highlight neutron stars. As an occasional (but long term!) player, I find I need the neutron boosts to help me get the to waypoints on time each week!

Last night I couldn't bookmark any more and, after searching the forum, found that you are only allowed 128!! For a journey of 65,000 ly (and back), I think I'm going to need a lot more than that!

I'm guessing it's not a huge programming task to increase this number? 1024 maybe?

Or, better still, I would really like the ability to put my bookmarks in 'folders'. At the moment I am using prefixes for organisation e.g. _DW2_ for Distant Worlds, _NEU_ for neutron stars, etc. but this would be much, much easier with organisational (and coloured?) folders.

Maybe 8 folders with 128 bookmarks in each?

Or maybe more...?

Time to dig out my mockup again ...

Being able to sub-divide/classify bookmarks has remained one of my most desired QoL features for over a year now.

Yeah, I'll totally love it. "Good Industrial economies, Good agricultural economies, Good military economies, etc". This has to be included soon and fast.

Did you ever think to start your ED related blog? With events, photos, videos and coordinates? Instead of making blog from the bookmark feature.%)

ps: I have the engineers in my bookmarks and couple of systems prefixed with "_" to be on top of the list for "urgent" usage, like "I need to high wake and very quickly".

Hi Alec

I had an almost identical idea in the middle of the night last night (and luckily still remembered in the morning). Then when I thought about posting my idea I saw your post with your fab mock-up.

I had discounted colours as I thought this may well interfere with the other coloured icons (CGs, friends, stored ships, engineers), though it would be nice to make it work somehow. Perhaps those other icons could also be 'turn-off-and-on-able'. :)

If I may be so bold I have an additional aspect to add to the idea, which is to add a simple visibility button. I use Photoshop a lot and thought the bookmarks could work a lot like layers and groups. It would certainly make 'bookmark management' easier.

I've used your image to mock-up my addition (hopefully this works):

Yes - love it! I always meant to go back to my mockup and add checkboxes. Actually I was only going to go as far as having checkboxes for each folder/colour but sure, why not a checkbox for every entry (a bit like we have now with deciding which trade routes to display).

The other thing I'd want to is an easy way to be able to point to a bookmark on the galaxy map and find out what it is. In fact it's kinda criminal that we can't already do that.

In fact, now that I look at the galaxy map trade filter interface again ... jesus Frontier! You've already done the work (even all the colours)!!! Just use exactly the same damn interface for bookmarks. Job done!

Thought I should also nail down my thoughts on Bookmark navigation and suchlike too:

I think a dashed line could indicate where you are in the navigation, which would be very useful when navigating using cursor keys or a controller.

Access to sub menus
This would be for editing Bookmarks or deleting etc.

Groups (for clarity)
To keep things tidy it should be possible to Open/Collapse a group (down=open, right=closed)
I would suggest that groups are nameable in the same way that Bookmarks are.

Quick navigation.
Navigating using the group's open/collapse button could allow you to navigate much quicker by taking you directly to the next group, instead of having to go via every Bookmark.

Bookmark visibility.
The group visibility button would hide/reveal the whole group.
(To add clarity, I've shunted the group visibility button to the left.)
  • When hidden, none of the group's bookmarks would be visible on the galaxy map.
  • When visible, the group's bookmarks would be visible on the galaxy map, unless any have been individually hidden.

Mouse scroll-wheel should naturally scroll through the bookmarks.
Might be nice if a right-click could open a Bookmark sub-menu.

I think that just about covers it...

Ps. How do I embed images in these posts so they're visible?

Pps. I'm quite also pleased with another mock-up from last year for rank level pips:
